There is about 8 drive in camp sites big enough for small RVs and 1 wheelchair accessible.
It is an interesting drive in as previous reviews noted. There is about a 5 minute drive in through a private residential area on a one lane (narrow, unpaved road) before reaching the campground.
Clean bathrooms with TP (Primitive), Grill and fire pit in each campground, bench, trash bins by the bathrooms (both small and large), and a easy driveway/parking lot for day parking.
It's about a 5-10 minute walk from the river itself
We surveyed the other campsites (Gladecreek, Grandview Sandbar, Stonecliff, and War Ridge); if you like more trees/closer proximity to the river, go check those ones out first before you settle on the campgrounds.
Overall, the experience was average to above average, as we did not have many trees to help us canopy (we used our own tarp) for the weeklong rain we had.

Read moreWe had no trouble finding a spot to camp on a weekday around 10. Many people were just tent camping, but there were several large trailers (40ish foot). The day use beach area was very nice to swim in and exercise at. The bathrooms are pit latrines, but they have a fan and other proper equipment so that the bathrooms don't smell at all (you may smell it some outdoors depending on the wind). New River Gorge visitors centers are each about 40 minutes away. There is absolutely no cell phone service at this campground. At the entrance to Army Camp road you can get barely enough verizon service to get directions on a maps app, but I'd recommend you have a map(one is posted near the bathroom) or screenshot your directions...
Read moreNo reservations, they fill up fast. We managed to get two adjacent spots because we got there so early. It’s so close to the river. It’s wonderful. Next time we will try to get a campsite that is a bit further north, so we will be closer to Thurmond, BridgeWalk (must do), and the restaurants in Fayette. We still had an amazing time. Everyone was respectful and quiet and the nature was gorgeous. Blue herons and plenty of birds. The walking trail at the end of the parking lot that has signage by the parks service is actually not maintained at all. It goes back a bit but it is covered in downed branches and is overgrown. We took it for a couple miles but eventually it got too overgrown, even for us, which is...
