⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 2025: D-loop. Beautiful time. DO NOT DRINK THE WATER! Benzene contamination from wildfire.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 2024: Brand New water system! Thank you! E-loop half rain, half sun and overcast
2023: CLOSED for renovations
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 2022 UPDATE: One word: Redemption! First Come, First served site, river front A-loop. Multi-site, group site now $44 a night. Perfect sunny week! Best campground hosts ever! Bought my groceries at the IGA, My rum next door, and my firewood at the Chevron in Packwood.
⭐ 2022: Simply the worst experience in 40 years! Made reservations back in January. Emailed me a cancellation notice 5 days before my trip! Trees was the excuse! Those trees have been there since before I was born, and will be there long afterwards! Sounds like bad park management by Rocky Mountain Recreation! Recreation.GOV allows reservations starting in May. Looks like July is a better month for making early reservations!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 2021: Simply the best year ever camping here. Best campground hosts I've ever seen in a campground.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 2020: My impression of La Wis Wis this year, PAAAACKED! Especially for those whom seclusion is their preference. The campground loop roads are paved, so bicyclers, skateboarders, rollerbladers, dog, and dog less walkers, everywhere. Short season this year tho, because of the pandemic, and all. Quite literally got the last campsite in the wooded B-Loop, that was available, in the entire park. I was FF; First come, First serve. It was not riverfront, but still did not disappoint. Most all of the sites were reserved way ahead, and some of them stayed empty all night. The forecast called for rain both days, but it ended up being overcast one day, and all sunny the next. Special animal sightings; A Pileated Woodpecker, characterized by its red mohawk. This year, La Wis Wis Campground is run by; 'Rocky Mountain Recreation Company', out of California. Single site $22, Multi-site $40, $8 day use, and $10 extra vehicle/a night. On-site firewood $7 a bundle. This was a noticeable switch from last year's 'Hoodoo Recreation'. They would at least deliver firewood to my campsite. I recommend cheaper firewood in Packwood. I got my firewood at the Chevron for $6 a bundle. Rumor has it, the Fire Chief owns the gas station there, and stocks their firewood. That firewood burned hot! Can't go wrong with that. I didn't see hide, nor hair of the campground host this year. Sign said off duty, and I can bet they were worn out from the weekend of the 4th. Check out time changed from; 4pm to; 1pm. Vault toilets are closed, and porta potties were brought in. The cabin remodel project seems to be on hold, and does not appear to be rentable yet. The campground facilities are in neglect. They need to get the piping and pump working again in the H-Loop, build showers, and add another loop to the park. This place sees enough visitors, that such investments would eventually pay off. Neglect is what happens when you rent campgrounds out to management companies.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 2019: Favorite campground by far! Family favorite since before 1988. Peaceful and relaxing. Best sites are along the riverfront. Nothing beats the soothing sound of the river. Mosquitoes are a plague though. Citronella candles, or tiki torches help, but nothing beats 100 Deet. Firewood is sold on-site, and the supplier may deliver it to your camp site. Otherwise Packwood is the closest town for supplies. Fishing is allowed and a permit is required. I have caught fish by the Clear Cowlitz River Bridge many years ago. Salmon eggs on a bobber, works well in this river. Swimming in the Blue Hole is extremely popular during the dog days of summer. Hypothermia is still a more real threat than drowning. Leash law is in effect at all times. There is a multi-car fee. If you're planning a group picnic, vans are a great mode of transportation, since parking is very limited. Mountain bikes are a great way to get around, but there are no MTB trails. There are a few hiking trails to enjoy. Must make reservations especially for the summer time. The best way is to reserve a...
Read moreThis is a great campsite. I had driven through before and my initial reaction was that it was down in a canyon and probably dark and not very appealing. Nothing could be further from the truth. The river setting is lovely, the forest is old growth and there is a section in the river where you can actually swim (called the Blue Hole).
We were on the C loop which is not on the river, but in a lovely old growth forest and very peaceful and quiet. The sites were also larger here than on the A, D or E river front sites. We went to open river spots in the early evening so got to enjoy some river time.
The Blue Hole is a must and is a lovely spot where the water is slow moving and waist deep in August. Note that the easiest access is not via the signed Blue Hole trail (which requires going up a hill then down a steep embankment) but straight through from the parking lot where you see some orange cone markers.
We thought it weird there was only one camp host. Usually with a campground this large, there is a camp host on every loop. The camp hosts were not interactive either. Usually you end up having some interaction with the hosts even if it is just a quick high. As two females who ended up being the only people in our section on the C loop one night, it felt slightly vulnerable. Although the campsite feels very...
Read moreWe came out the week of July 22nd, 2024.
This was our 4th time coming to La Wis Wis.
We love coming here. It's quiet, serene, & relaxing. There is plenty of trails nearby, plus the park itself is only a few miles up the road.
The ONLY THING I will warn future families of is Site B-8. Online reservations did not provide any photos. But we did our best off of the map that was available online
B-8 is almost ALL SLOPE. It's a pull through driveway, as well. You can fit 1 SMALL tent, and that's about it. I would say it's an ideal spot for a single person, or couple, who are car camping, or has a little tear drop trailer.
Our camp hosts were SUPER SWEET, and allowed us to locate a "walk in/first come first serve" site that would accommodate our tents, car, and supplies. They then switched our reservation over to that spot. So we didn't have to pay extra!
We have done weekend camping, and weekday camping. Of the two, we enjoyed the weekday camping way more. It was so quiet, and we never had to worry about other campers traipsing through our site, and there was ALWAYS plenty of firewood at the hosts site.
10/10 would recommend this campground to anybody looking for a...
