Got a campsite reserved at Whalen last minute on a Friday morning and we were so happy they had availability! It's a really nice campsite with two flushing toilets that are kept very clean. The camp host, whose name I forget, is a really nice and wonderful lady. Very helpful. There is a hiking trail around the island which isn't too long but it's a good walk through forest terrain that turns into dunes. We stayed at a "brown tent" site which is smaller than the blue, but even then the brown tent sites are still definitely large enough to accommodate a large truck and an awning and even a ground tent. Theres also a large fire pit in each campsite. You can walk about a mile south on Sandlake Road to the Sitka Sledge Natural Area, and from there walk a couple miles (or more) around that area to see the neat estuary and beaches. The tide comes in and out which is nest to watch. Plenty of herons and crabs to look at, and even bald eagles if you're lucky.

I just got back from a short camping-trip from Whalen Island. To briefly sum up my experience: I had a great time here; this island is an awesome spot where I will surely come back soon! Whalen Island and the Clay Myers State Natural Area is a truly great little get-away spot right off the coast -- you can see and hear the ocean from some parts of the island. The camp site is rather small: only a handful of sites at the southern part of the island, one clean and equipped restroom-building, and hospitable and friendly camp hosts. The camp sites are close to each other, but you will still have plenty of privacy; and since it's a smaller camp, it's much more quiet and peaceful than other camps along the coast. The island is beautiful, filled with nature and wildlife. It's a perfect little camp!

Great place for families, couples and solo. One of the few places in Oregon that is not overcrowded, yet. A range of activities available, from having a picnic at the beach, but without the noise and ocean winds, kayaking, SUPiing, hiking on the beach or in the forest. Bring your dog along, but keep on a leash. If you want to kayak, check tidal schedule for Pacific City, because you will need a high tide of at least 8-9 feet to enjoy going around the island. Launch kayak at the end of incoming tide and complete right around the reverse, this way you have just about couple of hours to get around the island, if you don't get lost in the intricate maze channels on the Eastside.

There is no waste dump for your RV as advertised. There are 2 flush toilets and several porta potty’s. Site 2 was near level. County should take some of the fees (over $31 per day) and upgrade to at least electric in some of the sites. They charge $6 for a pet. What for? Rude people haven’t pickup after their dog. There are 3 rabbits there leaving their waste all over where they go. They doubled in size while I was there and in no time there will be dozens of them like at Webb Campground where there is a dump site. No cell service, ATT or Verizon. The host fishes and when she catches a sculpin she throws it on shore. The blue heron lives there and eats the fish from the shallow water. I hope she leaves some...
