My husband and I spent this past weekend on Treasure Island. We had a BLAST!!!! When you first arrive, you will be greeted by a member of the TIO team. Everyone we met, from Stephanie, Nathan, to Uncle John etc were so helpful and kind. We unpacked our gear near the dock, got on the barge to cross the river to the island (only about a 2 minute ride), took an ATV to our campsite and unpacked!
For reference, we packed for a 2 night stay: A medium-sized fan, 2 sleeping bags, 1 twin air mattress (I have a bad back and need more support), a 1 gallon jug of water (we didn't know they give you a 5 gallon jug!), 1 waterproof tarp, 2 small duffel bags and 3 pillows. Nathan is awesome and will give you a Jackery power pack to charge up your devices. We used it to pump up our air mattress, keep the fan flowing for about 5 hours (we had it on high, next time we would do low setting to keep it on longer!). I also brought a set of string lights, which lit up our tent so nicely!
We picked a canvas tent to stay in, which we were very glad we did because our first night there we had a wicked storm. It was so relaxing and our tent sure was waterproof! The sites are large, with a fire pit ring, a propane gas tank, and we opted to rent the canoe for our stay but the barge back and forth was actually easiest! The latrine is not a far walk at all from the campsite.
We went tubing on our second day. It took us about 3 hours down the river, while stopping for a hot dog at the Hot Dog Man (pricey but worth the novelty). Then we pulled over on a bank for a little bit since it was so nice out. The river had a good amount of people floating but we had plenttttyyy of room around us. We brought a cooler, for which Nathan gave us a separate float just to hold that stuff, some water bottles, and a speaker.
We ended up buying a neat little shower contraption from Amazon. It's a big bag you fill with water and it has a spout. We hung it from a tree branch and it worked PERFECTLY. We each took 2 showers, filling it between each shower.
If you are considering a quick getaway, this is the one! They couldn't be nicer. We felt safe and had a ton of...
Read moreNot your average camping experience... We have camped yearly at the typical campground and thought we would try this for a new adventure. Our campground host, Hugh, was extremely helpful and carried many of our bags and supplies down the stairs to the boat that took us over to Treasure Island. From there we loaded our gear into an ATV and were given a tour of the former Boy Scout camps. We arrived to our Outfitters tent site and loved the riverside view. It was a hot and humid weekend and were very grateful for the 2 bags of ice and 2 five gallon jugs of water Hugh gave us. On Saturday we enjoyed the river tubing afternoon and Hugh even gave us a lift afterwards to get some hoagies, as the Hot Dog River Man is no longer open along the river and we had planned on that for our meal. Hugh also took care of a few camp site requests from us while we were gone for those few hours. There were only two other people on the island but they were at the opposite side, making it a very peaceful experience. There is an open area with corn hole and a gaga pit for entertainment. The open air outhouse was a short walk away and not as terrible as one would think. We did rent a canoe, but our site did not have water access and due to the heat and other activities, we never did use it. A few things to note * There are many wooden steps down to the boat, so pack as light as possible. Bring bug spray, bug repellent and a fly swatter. I did not get a single mosquito bite (they usually love me) but there were many, many bugs since the area is very lush with trees and foliage. Bring as much ice as possible, it is a struggle to make it last for 2.5 days. We were very grateful for the propane grill and we did most of our cooking on that. There is plenty of firewood near the camp sites. The Outfitters tent had one full sized bed with a covered mattress. We were able to move the bed to the side enough to fit a single air mattress next to it. We did bring a small tent and also used the one provided by them for night 2 with our air mattresses, as the bugs were kept at bay a bit better that way. The River man hot dog stand no...
Read moreWe spent 2 nights and 3 days on Treasure Island last week. Luckily the weather report called for rain and all other reservations cancelled so we had the 47 acre island all to ourselves, and then it barely rained. The shelter was great, watertight and clean. Bathroom on site was ok, but when is an outhouse ever great? The island used to be a boy scout camp that is now abandoned, giving a spooky, historic feeling. The REAL star of our weekend was Nathan, our host from Treasure Island Outfitters. Polite and well spoken, he took such wonderful care of us. Available by call/text the whole time. He helped carry our stuff to/from the car/barge/campsite. He ferried us back and forth to the mainland whenever we needed. He set us up for the tubing trip with an extra tube for our stuff, and straps to link up. At the end he appeared out of nowhere on a kayak to guide us back to our island. One morning he arrived with 20 pounds of much needed ice. Hopefully, his employers know what a valuable asset Nathan is to their operation, especially these days that hiring quality employees is so difficult. Hope he gets paid accordingly! Thanks...
