Well where do I begin ,we had put a deposit down to ski here back last winter and seven buddies and I could not fly in to Ironwood because of the weather(we were supposed to go to Bohemia also) we had a $350 deposit down and they let my wife and I use that deposit towards a night stay here September 5, 2017. so my wife and I took a trip around Lake superior and Sarah The booking agent who I spoke to initially upgraded us to a suite second floor room 215 which was very large and actually the bathroom looked like it was modernized ,kitchen full-size refrigerator and stove and a king bed which was very comfortable. My wife and I golf and when I booked this Sarah said the golf is not included because it's separately owned but Barbara who was there when we checked and said she got them to throw the golf into the deal, it is a good thing because the golf course is in an absolutely horrendous shape and actually almost unplayable. The course is only about 15 years old and the layout is very nice and the views and elevated TV boxes but the conditioning has just gone to the dogs it was really laughable. Anyone who actually pays to play golf here would probably quit and get their money back after the first or second hole it's that bad.||As an avid skier and chairlift nut I was intrigued by playing golf under and around all the chairlifts one of which is the most bizarre chairlift in the western hemisphere according to skiernet. It goes up Eaglesnest mountain ,has a midway drop off point and then a summit unloading dock and continues down to the bottom of thunderhead mountain where you can get back on it again to go back up to the summit of Thunderhead. It is about 4300 feet long making it one of the longest ski lifts in the Midwest if not longest and has 100 foot or so vertical drop over a valley with no safety bar so if you ride this be careful because if you fall off who knows what could happen. I would love to ski here because as a wanderer it looks like an awful lot of fun as an old-school skier and I do like all the Swiss and European named runs it just looks like a lot of fun for any kind of skier||I sure hope some deep pocketed person comes along who buys it ,I believe it was for sale for $2 million Barb said.with some more cash the golf course could be made to be a real nice layout.of the conditions were right .I feel sorry for Dave who at age 82 is running around on golf carts trying to keep this place going. It was almost like a scene from the shining movie with Jack Nicholson, it was eerie. Only 2 other couples. They opened the pool and hot tub which were great.||Barb recommended Joany's in Iron Belt about three or 4 miles down the road which is a small local bar but we had fantastic broasted chicken in there . Joan who owns it I believe did not have any help and the local people were helping her serve it was fantastic meal and a bloody Mary was super.||I wish I had very deep pockets because skiing and golfing are my two favorite pastimes and this could be fantastic with great conditions on the course and slopes.Wish I could buy this place. one of the problems is you have Indianhead, Big Powderhorn, A half hour up the road.||I gave it a 4 star rating because I would love to see it stay in business so I could ski there someday, the only problem is it's a 10-13 hour drive from Grand Rapids on DRY roads. It was just fun to go back to what a '70's ski area...
Read moreMy husband and I went to this resort for a weekend getaway. I was a bit nervous after reading some of these reviews, but was quickly put to ease one we got into our room so I figured I'd write a review to clear up some of the older reviews. First of all, the person at the front desk was nice and no issues there. Once we got into a our room, I was happy to see shades on the window because someone left a review stating their window didn't one. Secondly, someone posted about not being allowed to bring outside food in. That is not true, you can bring outside food in, but you have to eat it in your room, you can't eat it in the restaurant. Which makes sense, you can't go to McDonald's and sit at one of their tables and eat a Little Caesars pizza.. Thirdly, someone said there wasn't many amenities, not too sure what they are looking for, but our room had a fridge, microwave, coffee pot, and WIFI. Also, there was an indoor pool and whirlpool that closed at 9:30 pm. So they had everything a typical hotel would have. Moving on, someone mentioned no TV stations, but having the ability to use streaming services. This is true, however, the TV stations we part of Roku TV which wasn't terrible. Just didn't have local channels.
Now that I've cleared up some of the misleading reviews, I will go over a few gripes I did have. One being the coffee pot in the room. I went to use the pot and it didn't work, but I did let them know so I'm sure that has been fixed. Another gripe is there was one chair in our room to sit in so seating in the room was extremely limited unless you wanted to sit on the bed which made eating dinner a bit challenging. Also, the walls are extremely thin and you can hear every noise that happens. We were on the first floor and the people above us sounded like elephants walking around. There is an excessive noise complaint fee (minimum $50) which is a bit odd, but easy to avoid. Just don't be loud. The last gripe is the pool area. That area has so much potential to be really nice, but it's dark, dingy, and frankly, creepy. There's not enough lighting in the area nor in the pool. There was about 5 70's looking, plastic, school chairs in the area to put your stuff on. No tables or anything. So aside from those gripes, the resort was overall decent. It is a bit out there though so if you don't want to eat at their restaurant, you'll have to drive about 15-20 miles into the nearest town. Definitely something to keep in mind before arriving at the resort in case you want to pick up stuff from a store you pass on the way. Like I said, they have a microwave and fridge. The fridge isn't large, but it gets the job done.
Hope this review cleared up some of the old reviews that we posted. The hotel seems like it's getting or got renovated, I know a fire happened there in 2019, not sure of the extent of it though. I believe it's a new owner too so perhaps, they are working on fixing up the rooms to be more up to standards. Anyways, if you stay here, it is a beautiful area with a lot of things to do around the surrounding area such as hiking, waterfalls, scenic drives, casinos, beaches, antiquing, etc. we went in the summer so I can only speak of the summer...
Read moreWe were staying on the mountain for a week for a job I was working on. We had access to a privately owned golf cart so after work we decided to cruise around and take a look at the area, since we had never actually seen the course, and their website is an absolute joke. To be honest it’s hard to tell if the place is even open and functioning, as the entire place looks run down and poorly managed, almost as if it’s been abandoned all together. As we are driving the course we literally commented on how beautiful it was and how we should try to play a round that weekend if they were indeed open. Immediately after that comment a very hostile man came flying up on his John Deere cart claiming to be the OWNER and instantly started threatening us and acting as if he wanted to physically fight. We repeatedly tried to inform him that we were simply trying to take a look and had indeed planned on playing a round. He continued on with his hostility and forced us to leave. Never once offered for us to play, or even pay for a tour. I have never been so disrespected by a staff member at an establishment before, let alone the owner of said establishment. For a place that is so clearly struggling for business, you would think the owner/staff would be much more welcoming. I have been met with the same type of attitude from most of the people who seem to work here, however it’s impossible to tell because no one wears any sort of identification. Long story short, The course and the area are beautiful. However with such poor management, I doubt anyone would actually enjoy this place. All of the buildings owned by the mountain are run down, some literally caving in on themselves. The roads are absolute hell, and the entire parking lot is essentially a mud hole. This place will need a miracle to turn a profit, and I don’t believe this new owner is the answer. Will not be giving any of my hard earned money to such a...
