Beautiful Campground! Terrible Terrible campground host. Bad experience started with trying to call the campground - 26 times - on the ride up to state we would be arriving after check-in hours. Had I only known it didn't matter because JASON the campground host was basically non-existent our entire stay. Arrived Sunday night. On Tuesday met Steve a wonderful, pleasant and helpful assistant host who asked if we had seen Jason. The next day DEC drove the loop and asked if we had seen Jason - nope! Another 2 days later 2 DEC rangers arrived looking for Jason as he (Jason) reluctantly drove up to the campground. I'm pretty sure they gave him a bit of a spanking which is why he turned his bad attitude toward us. Later that day he rolled through the campground, stopped at our site and made a gesture of 2 fingers pointing to his eyes and then to us to insinuate - I see you do you see me. What a rude unprofessional little man Jason is. I'm pretty sure he is basically being paid to do absolutely nothing. I'd say that's a waste of NY state funds. DEC should fire Jason and find a reliable person that can actually do his or her job. We were told he gets paid do be at the campground Wednesday night through Monday afternoon. For every past, present or future camper looking for the host. Good luck finding him. I'm convinced he is pulling the wool over everyones eyes. Let me be the one to expose his secret. Replace him. DEC is losing money because no one is ever there to collect funds for day use. Check the records. We saw numerous people come and go looking for someone to pay and then celebrating a free visit. Jason needs...
Read moreThis campground is rundown and noisy. We were there a month ago or so, and as we were pulling in, my wife was trying to talk me into leaving. We were greeted by a boarded up building, old cars parked along the entrance, and a generally rundown vibe (see photo of park entrance). I couldn't get the movie Deliverance out of my mind
The main campground is a grassy circle with a few trees interspersed and sites packed closely in together. Sites 6-11 are off of the main circle and are wooded and much more secluded with plenty of space between sites. We were at site 8, which was easily the best site at the campground. We were in a 25 foot camper, and we just barely squeezed in. I don't think one much larger would fit.
There was no dumpster or dump station at this campground. We had no cell reception using Verizon (I consider this a plus, my wife disagrees!). This seemed to be a party campground. If that's what you want, you may love those place.
I would not stay here again.
The only saving grace (and why it got 3 stars) was the worker (Park ranger?) that worked at the ranger station. I wish I could remember his name, but can't. He has the tracheotomy though. He came by everyone's sites checking in on them. He let us know he was available 24/7 for emergencies, and asked if there was anything we needed. He was super friendly, and definitely the high point of this campground. The NY Park system should be thankful to have...
Read moreThis is my favorite NYSDEC campground! I started coming here in ~2019 when the former caretaker was quite literally MIA the first two years I would come. In 2022 we were greeted by the new caretaker/manager, Steve who is AWESOME! He is friendly, informative, and one of the best camp managers I have met. This campground may not be desirable to some campers who prefer showers, garbage stations, electric, or internet but for me it checks all the boxes. I mean it is camping, right? The point is to disconnect from your stresses and connect with nature. I’ve woken up to loons in the morning, seen some of the most amazing starry skies, outstanding sunsets, and have had some of the greatest memories with my closest friends here over the years. Plus we learned from Steve that you can head over to Wilmington Notch down the road to dispose of trash and take showers! This spot is small, in the middle of nowhere, and is an absolute gem. I’ve camped around all of New York and I would pick Taylor pond...
