DETAILED REVIEW: Note - this campground is under new ownership and has undergone many changes as of Fall 2021.
I stayed for a whole week and loved this campground. Above all, I felt very safe. I left my stuff out all week and no one moved a thing. Everything is very reasonably priced here, including the camp store. This is even more true when considering how inflated the prices of staying anywhere near glacier are (it has gotta really bad). Even the gasoline at St. Mary's was 6$/gallon at a time when the rest of Montana was around $4.50! When you factor it all in, I felt like I got a very good deal staying here.
There are only a few campsites and a few cabins. I included a picture below, but to be fair I got the largest campsite they have, because this is sometimes used as a tandem site. The trees and vegetation here afforded me plenty of privacy.
There are bathrooms here with flushing water that are always super clean. Same goes for the showers. If you are staying at the campground and not in a cabin, there is a $10 charge per shower, which I also think is very reasonable considering that there straight up isn't any other way to get a hot shower near glacier unless you pay 100+ for rv hookups or 300+ for a hotel, assuming you can even get a reservation.
I liked the location. It is way up in the northeastern part of the park which was convenient for going to Waterton in Canada (bring your passport). It would've been difficult to get to West Glacier, but I had no interest in going to that side of the park anyway. This location was super quiet and only took about 15 mins to get to Many Glacier and 25 mins to get to Going to the Sun road (St. Mary), with moderate traffic. Be aware that there really is nothing in the town of Babb. There is a very small convenience store and a post office, and a saloon/restauraunt by many glacier. Otherwise, you will have to go to St. Mary's.
There is wifi, but for it to work reliably you have to go to the patio area. I didn't mind, because you camp at a place like this to disconnect.
The grounds are along a creek, which I found very soothing, but it wasn't particularly loud. The stars are beautiful out here.
Lastly, the owners are so friendly and helpful. They are always around the property, making sure their clients are safe and cared for, and have all their...
Read moreWe saw a sign for the Glacier Elkhorn Cabins & Campground while coming out of Many Glacier - all the park campgrounds were full, so we checked this out (about 4 miles north of Babb and the entrance to Many Glacier). I usually dislike campgrounds (late-night people shouting, etc.), but this is anything but a typical campground. Peaceful, quiet, with only a few people even though it's close to Glacier National Park. It felt secluded even though there was a highway behind our campsite.||||First impression was that it was run-down, but the bathrooms are actually quite nice (clean and with flush toilets, no sinks yet). The restrooms are not ADA-friendly - steps up to the platform, small rooms, etc. Most of the camp sites have a picnic table and fire ring. Some have space for a tent, others are more camper friendly than tent-friendly (no hookups).||||Owner was nice, too - rather gruff, but nice under the surface. You can pay at the office, or if you don't pay, she'll be down in her ancient pickup within a few minutes. There is also a box on the office where you can pay for your campsite. I felt the price was reasonable for what you get vs. nearby campground prices. You can also pay for showers.||||If the horses come and visit your site, don't worry - it just means the owner has been out and hasn't fed them their evening oats yet.||||If you pay for the next night, I'd leave something on the table saying the site is taken for night of (date) and push one of the convenient logs across the entrance to the site (or just...
Read moreThe location was great! When we drove in we thought we were in the wrong place. It is unkempt and messy. A weed-eater would do wonders for the office area. We finally figured out which way to go and found the campsites. We actually liked the campsites...good size, table and fire pit in each. We were the only people there. It rained for 3 days and flooded our campsite (as in 8" of water!) and the road was passable only in 4 wheel drive. After slogging through 3" deep running water on the road to our campsite we decided we just couldn't handle it. We ended up having to rent one of the cabins for 2 nights but the hosts wouldn't deduct the campsite fee even though we couldn't use it. There are bathrooms available with flush toilets, but no sink, mirror or trashcan inside. There is a water spigot outside. When you rent one of the cabins you also receive free showers. The shower bathrooms were certainly decent. The only catch is you have to schedule them with the host, as he sits and waits for you to shower then locks up. He won't work past 9pm and doesn't like to work before 7am. I understand this. He did make an exception for us one day when we needed 6:30am showers because we had to leave early. If you go, check the weather! I sure wouldn't stay there if there is rain in...
