We were making plans to return before we left. Fairly confident, it was the even on the first night. We travel with a 30ft travel trailer, my wife and I, our fourteen year old daughter and a Catahoula named General Doglas MacArthur (Mac). You pull up to beautiful signage that is modern and fresh. It definitely had the feel of a resort, not just another campground. As you approach the office for check in, you see an impressive covered patio attached to the bar where we ended up spending more time and money than we intended. This overlooks the swimming pond with inflatable obstacles and large, impressive inflatable slide. Just past that is the office for check in and the pool. Again, the office is very well kept and the staff, who appeared young, were welcoming and efficient. I have read reviews of rude or abrasive staff, that was not our experience. We had reserved a full hook up, pull through, site. The site was at the end of a row and seemed to have more area than other sites I noted. To be honest, I only really took note of the sites directly around us to compare site size. There were large, mature trees through out the campground which we love to see. Full disclosure about the site, it took some work to get us level. Fortunately, we have camped enough to prepare for such an event, but if we weren't, it could have been an issue. This would be our one and only grievance, but again, being prepared, it was a non issue for us after taking the time to right the ship. Picnic table, fire ring and again, this was a nice, large, wooded site. We would stay on this site again. An additional benefit to the site for us was that there were cabins just across the street. My wife's mother would like to join us next time and likes her own space but also to be close to us. This will be a perfect set up. We did not go in the cabins but they seem to be everywhere!! We have found that often these camping cabins can be old and quite frankly, scary, but all the cabins looked clean and well kept. We had arrived late in the evening, about 730 so we headed over to the Fox Den to have a drink and hopefully grab some food. I had read that they allowed dogs in the bar area but there was no signage indicating, so I sent the girls ahead to make sure before Mac and I made our way in. We got the ok and found that they even have gone as far and having water bowls and treats out. This is a huge thing for us as we travel EVERYWHERE with Mac in tow and often, if he isn't welcome, we don't feel welcome. This might have been the moment that I first started thinking about coming back. The bar was awesome. Several beers on tap, their Old Fashions and Mojitos were made with all fresh ingredients and lots of specialty drinks too. They don't have a full restaurant but it was top notch bar food. I think we made it through the appetizer list and they were all very good. The cream cheese wontons and pickle mozz sticks were our favorites (go with the spicy dipping sauce). I also had an order of wings, they were large size and I had the jerk rub, and it was fantastic. Now, to be clear, the food was all very good, however, it was not cheap. Had the food not been as good, I would have more to say about the cost, but for us, we could eat good food, have several drinks, and never had to worry about driving anywhere, all with Mac at our feet. That's PRICELESS. For us anyway. The grounds are huge. Mac and I walked a good portion and found more pockets of cabins, tent sites, RV sites, and saw several bath houses. We never went in so I can't speak to how well kept they are. I would honestly be surprised if they were anything but nice. Disappointments to me were the fishing and dog ponds. They are all the way in the back, and very small. I guess I would say don't book here for the fishing or the dog ponds. You will be disappointed in my opinion. These are my thoughts and experience, you may not agree but we will be...
Read moreWe stayed here for 14 nights. We arrived mid-afternoon on a Sunday, pulled into one of the two check-in lanes, picked up our arrival packet from the late arrival box with campground map and coupons for local businesses, and drove to our site. Excluding the sections that are exclusively for seasonal campers, the campground has roughly three sections. The first section you pass upon entering the park contains spacious pull-though and back-in sites that are open to the sky. The next section, adjacent to the office, is mostly smaller back-in sites within a shaded wooded area. The third section runs past and beyond the playground area, with shaded back-in sites on the west side and open-sky pull-through sites beyond the playground. All of the sites have gravel pads and grass lawns, with a fire pit and picnic table.
We stayed in pull-through site G21, a pull-through that was just long enough to fit both our 37-foot fifth wheel and 21-foot truck by parking the truck sideways across the front of the site. We put a board under the driver's side campter tires, but otherwise we were fairly level. The line of trees across the gravel road in front of the street shielded us from the sun during the morning hours, but also sporadically dropped acorns on us, which at times were pretty loud on impact. The hookups were reasonably placed, though the sewer connection wasn't threaded.
The campground has a ton of amenities: a swimming pond as well as a swimming pool, typical outdoor campground games like overisized chess, corn hole, horseshoes, shuffleboard and disc golf. They also have playground equipment for younger kids along with a sand volleyball court, a pickleball court, and a basketball hoop with a concrete slab court. The office has a small store with souvenirs and convenience items, but during the off-season it's only usually open on the weekends (a phone number is posted if you really need something). Same deal with the Fox Den snack bar, which serves food items like pizza, soft pretzels, and nachos that you can eat while playing their old arcade games or sitting on the picnic tables outside. The bathouse next to the playground has several shower stalls, some inside the men's and women's bathrooms, but also a few behind the bathhouse, likey meant for post-swim showers.
The campground is pretty dog-friendly. There are three enclosed dog areas: two near the front second of campsites and one at the end of the third section (bring your flashnight at night; none of them have any lighting). There's plenty of open grass acrss the main road from the first campground section, and there is a nature trail that weaves in and out of the campground if your dog prefers the privacy of the woods.
AT&T cell service is generally pretty bad here, particularly in the deeper parts of the campground: my smartphone showed 2.5Mbps down and 1 up. I got better service on my Verizon Jetpack with MIMO antenna, but it was inconsistent: some days it would be virtually unusable, or be usable for a short period before dropping, and other days it would be good enough to stream with some pixelation (even though the bandwidth numbers were usually terrible at the time). I would have had trouble working if not for the campground WiFi: we were one spot away from the nearest repeater, and I saw speeds of 9Mbps down and 4 up.
The Halloween-themed weekends (held in September as the park closes in early October) are clearly...
Read moreThey advertise bathrooms near the tent location on the campground map, however there was no bathrooms near our area. The only thing they had was a gross porta potty. The staff in the office were not friendly and the tent sites were right on top of each other. The dumpsters were full to the brim. It was very overpriced ($331 for a tent site with W/E!!!) and very much over rated. Thought we’d be getting decent amenities for our expensive 7 day stay….at least a bathroom with running water that’s walking distance for late nights and not a gross porta potty. The swimming hole was nice, but no shade close for parents to watch their kids swimming. We ended up checking out early due to medical reasons and overall bad experience. We won’t be back. UPDATE:This place responded to this review rudely as they aren’t friendly. They claim I missing pieces of my story….umm no, it’s pretty straight forward. Upon check out I kindly asked if I could leave 2 bags of trash and a small box at my site as my car was packed full and I was trying to get out quick as I wasn’t feeling all that great (my heart rate was in the 180’s). They were really offended by this simple favor, even after o explained my health condition. Now that the campground rudely shared more detail of my medical issue, I’ll go into a bit more detail. I have a form of Dysautonomia and have tachycardia episodes with chest pain. There’s no cure for my chronic illness, but I do get treated once per week with 4 hour infusions that’s accessed through a port in my chest. I had to miss one of my infusions so I could take my boys on a camping trip. I had medication for temporary relief, but sometimes it doesn’t work well. My condition wasn’t emergent, but it wasn’t comfortable either. I gave my honest opinion of this campground and everything I said above is what I experienced. As you can see they didn’t even respond with “I’m sorry” or “what could we have done better”. Their response to my honest opinion proves just how rude they are and the low level of compassion they have. In all fairness I will mention they did have activities for the kids, however we didn’t participate due to the Delta variant making its rounds and my 2 younger boys aren’t vaccinated yet. We aren’t a family who pretends as if this virus is nonexistent. Especially since covid can cause Dysautonomia in long haulers.
I kindly left this campground without asking for any money back. They kept every dollar for the unused days, in which I was ok with. With my heart rate in the 180’s, I wasn’t about to argue about our bad...
