My girlfriend and I stayed here one night in October of 2013 after planning a last-minute weekend getaway. We stayed at the nearby Trout House on Friday night, but they were already booked full for Saturday night and we came here. This was completely empty... and we soon realized why.
When we arrived at noontime, we walked into the lobby and nobody was around. We wandered around inside and outside for around 15 minutes with no sign of anybody. Finally, we called from our cell phone from the parking lot. The owner met us inside.
The owner seemed pretty annoyed that we were there looking to book for the night. We had to explain ourselves as to why we just showed up, as if we were doing something wrong by being there.
We paid $150 for a cabin for one night. Compared to other places, the price was on average for the off-season, but considering they offer less amenities than neighboring cabins, the price was slightly high.
When we got to our cabin, we were met by an elderly man who was already inside, complaining to us the whole time. He said he had to turn on the circuit breaker and stove, and it would've been nice if he had advance notice. He went on to complain that he had been given no notice at all and had no time to set it up. Apparently, it wasn't just the owner who was annoyed by us being there.
The cabin decor was somewhat dark and gloomy, as opposed to other places which are bright and cheerful (considering people go here for vacations and getaways). There was no wi-fi, which is usually standard at even your basic hotels. We also noticed periodic insects, which is understandable in a cabin in the Adirondacks, but it seemed more than normal in comparison to other cabins. The kitchen was extremely small (a very small area in the corner of the cabin), and was barely stocked with some of your essential cookware, but some essential items were lacking.
Basically, we just didn't feel welcome. We felt like they were doing us a favor by allowing us to stay at their resort, even though we paid a pretty penny for it. The owners/staff were rude and made us feel like we were a burden by being there. We didn't ask them for a single thing for the duration.
The advantages are that the resort is lakefront, the cabins have fireplaces (find your own kindling outside, though), and the cabins have small jet tubs (really only big enough for one person).
There are many other cabins nearby where the owners would be appreciative to have your business, rather than be made to feel like you can't wait to leave to get out of their hair.
This is definitely not the type of place to show up at without a reservation - unless you don't mind being badgered by the...
Read moreThe area, the setting, and the views are wonderful! I grew up in a place that was similar and the natural beauty was great. The facilities were not. The entire place had a early 1980s feel as if they were stuck back in time. Likely they didn't have the means to upgrade to at least the late 90s but they made NO effort. VERY small rooms, no closets, old stenciled decor, frozen pancakes, pre-made eggs and bacon for breakfast (which didn't open on time at all while we were there), and a general dinginess about the place (I was concerned about critters coming out of the cracked shower walls or from under the toilet seat. The place is wrapped in spider webs, a broom and a couple of hours every few weeks could fix that but no effort. (I got multiple spider bites, BTW). The owner was RUDE. When I called to make the reservation he asked me how I heard of them (reasonable) and why we were coming up there (questionable) I found it odd, but gave it little thought. I needed to do some work on my laptop one night but my room mate was trying to sleep. I went to the dining room as opposed to the main lounge area because my sensitivity to animal dander prevented me from being able to remain there. I was told that I could not work in the empty dining area and to go outside (in the dark and in the bugs). He was completely dismissive of my issues. I was explaining my situation when he abruptly turned away and left while I was mid sentence. I said aloud that he was rude and another worker said "He got a phone call." to which I responded that he had a live paying customer in front of him. I travel a good deal in my job both domestically and internationally, rural and urban. I've stayed at numerous questionable places over the years around the world. This was the worst. I highly recommend going elsewhere if you are in the area as they are...
Read moreWe booked NLGR last minute and were put in the "motel" building near the road. I thought, "how bad could it be, it's a resort!"||Well, bad is an understatement. The lodge building where you check in has so many dead animals hung that it's like a scene from a haunted movie. I used the restroom there while we waited 20 minutes for someone to find Dave. He is the only person that can check you in. The restroom was on the 2nd floor and at the end of a long, dark, dingy, smelly hallway...a communal bathroom and showers. Ugh!||||I hoped our room was going to be brighter and I was right. It was brighter but I wish I couldn't see how awful it was. It was supposedly cleaned before we arrived but when I put my bag on the bed there were cobwebs going from both sides of the blanket to each wall. It seemed like there hadn't been anyone there in weeks. ||Surprisingly the bathroom was the nicest part of the whole room which was like a shoebox. There's dark, dirty paneling, orange fiberglass drapes from the 60s-70s, which are multi color from fading due to the small amount of sun that shines on them. A/C is controlled by the management so it was also very warm for us, and the walls are so thin you can hear the next room breathing. ||The blanket had large watermark-like stains. The tv was old and no cable that worked. The small fridge was so old the shelf inside was rusted. Surely no food or drink was going in there. I was reminded of an episode of Criminal Minds where there was no escape and the couple were killed and eaten. ||||It was a pet friendly place but that's all it has to offer. We stayed only because we were desperate and we arrived late in the day. I expected more because it's a "resort". They do have some kind of restaurant there but it also looked dirty and just awful, and It cost us $140. ...
