Nice clean campground a mile or two from Chimney Bluffs state park, in a beautiful rural farmland setting. Lots of orchards and vineyards surrounding. The campground is family friendly with a pool and country store. Thereās a bathhouse with showers and also a small laundromat.
I stayed in one of the cabins with my dog; itās a rustic set up with a basic kitchenette and bathroom, and a full bed with two adjacent bunk beds. Cathedral ceiling and big sliding windows, very cute. You need to bring everything you would bring if you were staying in a tent - dishes, utensils, hand soap/dish soap, paper towels, bed linens, pillows, toiletries, etc. The kitchenette has a coffee maker, toaster, and microwave.
The cabin was EXTREMELY hot and stuffy but I arrived in the middle of a heat wave with temps in the high 90s; I only say this for others who might be traveling there in the summer - be prepared and bring a window fan. There is no AC in the cabins but they do provide a box fan and there are ceiling fans. I had brought my own box fan from home in anticipation of the heat, so with both of the fans on high, it was okay. Cabin cooled down enough at night to sleep well.
Thereās a fire pit and a grill out front of each cabin, and the screened in porch was huge - nice spot to sit to get away from the bugs at night. It was very quiet in the campground and the proximity to Lake Ontario with its hiking trails and little beach was a big plus. Really really peaceful area and overall lovely experience.
Only two negatives were 1.) someone stole the bundle of firewood I left next to my firepit while I was out hiking with my dog (not the campgroundās fault, just annoying), and 2.) on my last day there I was finishing up putting my things in the car and one of the campground employees knocked on the cabin door and said āyou know check out is at noon right??ā It was 11:50 am. I said āyes....Iām putting my bags in the car as we speak, and itās not noon yet.ā He was very rude and stayed in the yard in front of the cabin while I packed my car, talking about how another employee needed to come and clean the cabin, etc until I turned around and said, āitās not noon yet, and it takes five minutes to put my bags in the car.ā It did indeed take five minutes and I was checked out by noon. If you want your customers to check out before noon, then change the checkout time to 11 or 11:30. Donāt come knock on the door and rush me out at 11:50. Super rude. The employee who came to do the cleaning was apologetic.
All the other staff I encountered there were pleasant and friendly, gave me good info about hiking around Chimney Bluffs, and were overall nice to talk to. Again, the campground was well maintained and quiet. The cabin was super cute. The location couldnāt be better. I...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe stayed at Lake Bluff July 11-18.Ā Are site, 103, was very spacious, level and clean. The pool was ok. That's about the only thing the kids have to do. I called the campground 3 times, left 3 messages, to see if my site was available a day earlier. I never recieved a call back, booked the night online which cost me an extra $10 because I was only booking 1 night, not a week. The bathrooms were filthy,Ā showers gross with mold, doors falling off stalls, urinal covered in plastic bag, that was still being used. Ponds were gross with algae, I saw 2 turtles that could barely swim in it. Entrance is very uninviting, sloppy.Ā The staff was hardly around, and the store hours were almost nonexistent.
We had 4 grandchildren with us, and I would not allow them on the playground. It's rundown and in need of improvement. There were very few activities for the kids. Mt little ones were on the jump pad until I picked up a piece of wood with nails in it and several pieces of broken glass!!Ā The children do not wear shoes on the jump pad, it was very unsafe,Ā also near the foam pit area. I looked for a staff member so i coukd bring it to their attention, but noone was around and the store was closed. Staff was not friendly at all, my 5 yr old granddaughter said hello to one of them several times, he finally said hi, but never looked up from cleaning the pool. The misquoties and horse flies were brutal,Ā we couldn't even sit out by the fire. I don't believe we will be back. It's unfortunate,Ā we stayed here a couple yrs ago, and it was so much nicer.Ā I understand it has new owners. Maybe the cabins you're investing it should have waited and that money spent on the grounds. I was emailed a survey after our stay, replied to the contact email given. The email address was not found!
Good luck, the campground...
Ā Ā Ā Read more4 years ago this campground had events for children all weekend long. Build a sailboat with staff and race in the pool, matchbox car race with staff, bingo, wagon rides every Saturday night, band or two every weekend from memorial Day weekend all the way through the end of October, water gun wagon ride, breakfast cookout at the recreation hall, horseshoe events for adults, the list is too much to list. But when someone asked where to go camping with my kids lake bluff was always recommended because of the massive amount of children events. Constantly the owners were out there with staff creating many events for children in the park. Art crafts were a favorite for rainy days in the rec Hall with staff. All these events really brought the campground together the community together it was very enjoyable. Now the last two years that's all gone. No events to speak of, the children have stopped coming, we have camped with other couples all of us bringing our children there for years that's coming to an end now there's nothing for children to do. Sad to see the park close to empty when once you had to reserve your site a year in advance. Maybe the new owners need more time to get things together. Don't get me wrong, the park manager is amazing and accommodating, just not much staff as they had before most likely no staff to do the events. If you're planning a weekend, be prepared to entertain your kids because there's nothing going on..... And the playground would be a state crime if it was at a public school. Unsafe, outdated, broken in most spots and often parents don't allow there kids to go on it. I would say this is turning into a adult...
