Im not even sure where to begin. My family has been coming here since the beginning of time. I was here when I was a few months old and have come every year to bask in the glory of Brown Tract.
The campground aspect: -No motorboats allowed (which I love) -no showers on site (full ADK experience) -kayak/canoe/paddle board/sail boat/swimming are allowed out in the water! -Each site has a fireplace (we cook our meals and have fires on it, bring your own pans) -Wheelchair accessible bathrooms with plumbing , they also have Outhouses for some sites -Hiking (You can take a walk around the lower and upper pond ) -Giant Rock to jump off, on the Island into the water -No Cellphones work here. But, they do have wifi near the front of the campground but you should really unplug, use it for weather or emergencies !!!
Atmosphere: -Very well maintained campground and very friendly staff.
I love it here!! I hope to keep this tradition in my family for generations to come. I love everything about it from the bumpy, long, Uncas Road to the peaceful sound of a Loon waking me up in the morning. Its a good way to deplug and remember how precious life is. Its a great way to bond with your family as well.
BOTTOM LINE: 10/10 I would reccomend to family and friends and I certainly will...
Read moreI lived and recreated in Alaska for 30 years. I don’t have unrealistic expectations of state park campgrounds. This is a primitive campground. There are several flush toilets and cold potable water. The roads and sites are acceptably maintained dirt. You don’t need more than a sedan to get around. The campground is away from main roads so it is very quiet. Most sites are small but level and well separated from others. The forest is thick with conifers which provide shade but which block cooling breezes. Sites are gloomy on cloudy days and darkness comes quickly and thoroughly. Showers are available at Golden Beaches campground, also a NY state park and it is just a five mile drive. The restroom and shower I used there are in terrible condition. Some basins, showers, toilets were out of order. The floor outside my shower stall had an inch of standing water so figuring how to keep my shoes and socks dry while putting them on was challenging and probably funny to watch. Your registration at Brown Tract Pond gives you access to Golden Beaches campground. I only interacted with two staff members, both at Golden Beaches campground. They were helpful and friendly. I would not return to...
Read moreWhile this is a camper’s paradise with a remote location and beautiful lakeside campsites, it is very unsafe for older campers. As an avid camper and Registered Nurse for over 45 years, it is natural for me to have a focus on public health and safety. The bathroom serving our campsite (36) was situated on top of a hill with stairs leading to it. There was absolutely no lighting in or outside the bathroom although there were light fixtures in place. When I asked about this situation I was told “we run on generator power only and we don’t have enough of it to light the bathrooms…talk to the DEC in Indian Lake”. When I mentioned someone could easily fall and break a hip in the dark of night with only a flashlight to light the way, his response was “that would be unfortunate since it would take a while for EMT’s from Raquette Lake to reach us.” When we were camping, our neighbors on both sides of us were easily in their 70’s.||Throughout the day the sound of the campgrounds’s generators could be heard…campers should at least have bathroom lighting to compensate for the noise intrusion. This campground doesn’t seem to consider safety...
