Unfortunately, our experience was ruined by dishonesty, hypocrisy, and greed from the owner, Kathy.
When we arrived around 6PM, we realized we had forgotten the poles for our custom tent back in Illinois. The staff was away on a business outing. This immediately limited our options.
Since many campsites and several yurts were unoccupied, we asked if they could help us find a solution. We inquired about a yurt ($110), and asked if they could negotiate a lower price because of our limited use, Kathy refused because the computer couldn’t “handle it” so we offered cash, still no compromise.
When we asked for a refund on our unused campsite, she immediately blamed us, saying for verbatim: “Why are you making your problem our problem?” — referring to the fact we forgot our tent poles. She said this multiple times. In all honesty, the first time was enough. As soon as she said that I knew we weren't staying there that night. And I made the decision that this business relationship was done. I pointed out the hypocrisy: her absence and locked yurts were also creating a problem for us. And why should her whole camp staff absence be our problem now too? No one was there to open a yurt for an upgrade that we would pay for in FULL, yet we would have to wait roughly four hours before access, receiving less than half the usage while paying the entire price.
Despite this, over the phone, with both my husband Jordan and I present, she gave her word, saying verbatim: “I can give you my word. I’m a fair and honest person.” She repeated this multiple times and promised we would receive a refund the next day. I pressed her for clarity because she kept pretending she couldn’t hear us on the phone, on several account accounts, saying that “ We can talk about this tomorrow because I can’t hear you that well right now.” Oddly enough, she responded to every single thing we said. I didn’t want that to become an excuse for backing out, that she would just talk to us tomorrow. People do this all the time and as soon as she pushed the problem on to a later time, despite being able to hear us perfectly fine, I had a bad feeling. Based on her promise, we left and booked an expensive hotel. Which is fine with us because we were able to use the whole hotel for the entire Night and weren’t stuck in the middle of the woods waiting for somebody to come help us.
Around 10 PM, she called Jordan and completely reversed herself. She weakly asked if we still wanted the yurt—despite our clearly stated plan to take the refund—and then said, “Why should I give you a refund?” Her excuses were absurd: she claimed she could have booked the campsite to someone else, yet plenty of campsites were empty, and no one else wanted that specific site. She also pulled the “we’re a small business” card, as if that justified breaking her word, despite making thousands of dollars daily. Instead of honoring her word, Kathy strung us along, misled us with empty promises, and prioritized greed over fairness. There were plenty of open campsites and unoccupied yurts, yet she banked on the hope that we would have nowhere else to go and pay full price for less than half a night. Clearly, she missed out on this opportunity cost and regretted it.
We do not tolerate dishonest and greedy behavior, and we are taking this seriously. It’s not about the money—it’s about the principle.
At the very end of this phone call, I took over the phone and brought up all of these points to her and then she, was extremely snarky and resentful, trying to speak over these points. She relented and agreed again to giving our refund AGAIN for both of us to hear for the THIRD time. I don’t think she realizes that cellular companies recover these phone calls. We will take legal action if needed.
We have worked in the tourism industry and know how difficult it can be to see through a business’ façade, but we know the unethical practices happening behind the scenes, especially when you’ve seen how disgustingly greedy this industry can be. Dishonesty and broken promises will not go...
Read moreThis is one of the nicest campgrounds we've ever visited. The reservation system is different and something one must adjust to when used to having control of picking your campsite. You make the reservation and do not know, until the day of arrival, your campsite number. However, there really isn't a bad site in the place. It is super clean. You can literally watch as an rv leave and a worker promptly comes and cleans and grades the site (sites consists of a fine pea gravel). The sites are level, clean, and just all around immaculate. The workers even sanitize the power box due to the COVID pandemic. We also thought it was awesome that the campground is considered a dark park for star gazing so they have rules about turning off your awning lights at a certain time. They have strict rules about quiet time after 10p and extinguishing fires by midnight. At first I thought this was a bit harsh but after being there it is a really great rule as the campground is so peaceful and quiet and the views of the night sky are amazing. They dont have street lights and such in the campground though there are some lights around the store and a couple of small lights around the bath house. The campground has one shower house and laundry room that are unbelievably clean. They also have a nice sink area for washing dishes if you're camping in a tent. They have a few full hook up sites but also, for an affordable fee, provide a clean out service (honey wagon) for the sites that don't have sewer. There is also a vault toilet on the grounds. It was surprisingly clean as the rest of the area parks didn't seem to maintain those and they were just disgusting. This campground clearly goes over and beyond and takes pride in their property. The campground has a playground and volleyball court, adult sitting area for wifi, a game room with a pool table and fireplace (closed due to COVID) and a decently stocked store. There are also hiking trails that lead to a beautiful beach (Beach at Sand Bay Town Park) as well as to Rowley's Bay that has a bakery, restaurant, hotel, and pub. We enjoyed riding our bikes there and watching people fish off the pier. You can kayak or fish in this area or arrange for an adventure through an outiftter. It is rare to find a private campground that goes to the lengths this one does to maintain their property. We immensely enjoyed our stay and hope to begin a new tradition for vacationing. The whole area of Door County is a...
Read moreFirst time campers spoiled forever at Wagon Trail Campground As campers we love to share our passion but it's a risk. Taking first time campers out is a responsibility. If you neglect essentials and things go bad, you may turn newbi's off camping out for the rest of their lives!
Not a problem at Wagon Trail Campground. My only worry here is that my guests future expectations will never be met by another campground the way they were at Wagon Trail.
Firstly, the reservation process was efficient, communicative and friendly. Upon arrival, we noticed immaculately raked camp spots with the essentials, picnic table, fire ring and power and water on site- in our case.
The campground store was stocked well beyond necessity offering a free coffee a day and granola shooters. There is also a game room with free to use (and borrow) board games, pool table and video game machines for a small fee. Adjacent to the game room is a cozy hang out lodge with books and even a piano! Recreation area offers Bocci Ball, Playground and Badminton as well as rustic adirondack chairs for just kickin it.
The MOST impressive thing, and there were many- were the shower rooms next to the camp shop. Brand new, spotless and maintained constantly with an attractive sleek but rustic design. Shower stalls are new and gleeming with wand heads, should you prefer. Thoughtfully, a fan is placed on the floor during heavy use periods to avoid slippage.
Now a minute about the lost art of customer service. We made the epic mistake of assuming (you know the word breakdown lol) and left a tent behind. We had a late set up and were virtually planning on building a lean to for the night-in a very wet thunder storm .Went to owner Kathy for info on purchasing a tent nearby and she said "we have a tent that was left behind by a customer-haven't set it up for a while but it's yours to use if you need it" Problem solved in an instant. Amazing!
The only thing I would say is if you plan on partying, listening to music and raging into that dark night, camp somewhere else. There is a strictly enforced (yes, we had a visit from Tim the camp supervisor) radio silence at 10pm and fires out at midnight. Fair enough. It's a family place.
Thanks Wagon Trail and keep up the...
