I reserved two campsites, #17 and #18, for two nights.
The booking and check-in process was a breeze. Zach and I believe the other gentleman’s name is Matt... were awesome and helpful and friendly. They made sure we were accommodated and it was a pleasure talking with them. Apart from the staff, I was not impressed by the campground.
Pictures on the website are deceiving. It appears as though the campsites are secluded and separated by trees, providing some privacy between sites. There are plenty of nice trees and I would say 90% shade which was wonderful. However, the tent sites are all right next to each other in a line - with no such thing as even a bush to separate for a little privacy. We migrated away from the outskirts of #17 and closer to opposite end of #18 to put some distance between us and the family in #16 so as to not potentially disturb them. Thankfully the young couple in site #19 were very friendly and we enjoyed each other’s company. Lack of privacy would pose problems otherwise. The sites are in extreme proximity of each other.
We arrived late Friday evening to set up camp. To our surprise - there is train tracks on which cargo trains pass by just up the road. The trains do not come and go peacefully. It comes by every 45min-1hr and continuously BLARES THE HORN at all times of day. Perhaps it was my mistake for not checking for tracks on the map. But that was really agitating because it was even difficult to have conversations over the noise it produced.
The showers are functional. They look really gross but are actually quite clean so go for it!
We planned on renting kayaks/canoes at the campground. But the lake on which you use them is really small and narrow. We ended up spending the day swimming and hiking at Devils Lake instead.
I would not swim in their swimming area even if somebody paid me. It is probably only knee deep, and home to lots of critters and seaweeds. Same goes for the “beach” near site #21. I didn’t see anybody in there all weekend so maybe don’t count on swimming while you’re here. We did not use the pool so I cannot speak on that. I did see kids having fun splashing and swimming there.
I thoroughly enjoy primitive camping and by no means expect any outstanding amenities but I can’t say that I would...
Read morePost Trip: In short, we really liked Bass Lake. We stayed over the later Forth of July weekend; Friday through Wednesday. The owners were great, personable people. They maintained the place pretty well, made sure firewood was around, took steps to control mosquitoes, etc.||My family stayed in the cabins around the smaller lake and we very much enjoyed having our own little area. The cabins are sleeper cabins so they are very simple but perfect for what we wanted. The pool was small but clean and had a neat little bar area and music. There is also a little community room with some games and tables.||||Our only complaint was that the bathrooms were in need of some updating and repair. To be perfectly honest, they were exactly what I would expect for communal campground bathrooms, so no big deal.||||Pre-trip: Just called to make reservations, and so far I am impressed. I would recommend calling as the email I sent two days ago has gone unanswered. The owners may want to check to make sure it is working.||||I called later to leave a message, and received a call back within an hour.||Bill took my reservation info quickly with no need to repeat anything, deposit was fair, and he clearly had a system/list for making sure I got all of the pertinent information. I was left with no questions at the end. I'd say this is off to a great start!||||Note: I would caution against giving any credit to the single 2016 1-star review. I read it prior to booking, but found that none of their claims were true.||The owners have posted some very reasonable rules and we encountered no issues with them. That being said, this is not the place for a rowdy, loud, party group; it's a family campground.||Additionally, that "security guard" was cleaning the bathrooms. Its part of his job. I encountered him at 3 am after seeing a sign on the bathroom door, and he stepped outside while I used the facilities. He was in no way...
Read moreWe had a GREAT time there! Typical campground with great bonus of an awesome general store where they have all the essentials like the chocolate bars you forgot for your smores. Well done.
Super attentive staff during our visit. You would walk into the general store and they'd be walking in behind you so you never had to wait.
One morning walking in there was a main re-sealing the wooden sign with fresh polyurethane. It already looked beautiful but he was just keeping up on it. That is a great snapshot showing hearts that want to be diligent keeping up on their property! It showed.
My wife was happy with the bathroom/shower area. That goes a long way for a family when momma is happy with the bathroom area!
Try out the "banana peel" recumbent sway bikes when you come. Kids will love them and they have adult sized ones for the adults too! Had fun drifting a little bit in the gravel.
Bonus:. When the staff heard we were celebrating my little girls 1st birthday, the staff woman brought over some little gifts for the kids - my nephews and nieces. Little light up hair clips or whatever they were. The girls loved them! Super sweet of the staff and totally unexpected!
We stayed in the deluxe cabin. They're basic, clean, and functional for what they're made for. Giving you a night's sleep with AC if needed and some fridge space for some things.
Grill was a weber in great condition. Firepit at site. Firewood on site at reasonable price. Slushy bar near pool. Cold drinks there and in general store.
What more could you want?
Thanks for your diligence keeping the grounds and facilities in solid working order so families like mine can drop in and plop down and relax for a nice weekend away from the grind to enjoy each other in a fresh, different setting. We...
