Just what we were looking for!! We rented the Loon Nest for 5 nights (Sunday-Thursday). If you’re looking for a luxury condo resort type experience this is not it. But what is was was a clean cozy comfy 2 bedroom cottage (plus pullout couch) tastefully decorated for the north woods, looking down on a beautiful lake. The quiet almost envelopes you. So peaceful and relaxing. Several miles away from the nearest paved state or county highway. The night sky was filled with stars with the Milky Way clearly visible right over our heads. The Loon Nest is at the end of the campground closet to the lake, but away from the fishing and boating pier, so even if others are at the small campground you have peace and quiet. It’s even beyond the owners’ home! You have your own kettle grill and campfire ring with seating for up to four. Everything in the cottage works and is clean and maintained well. The pictures on their website are very honest depictions of the cottage. No TV, which for us was an attraction! There is a monitor and DVD player, and wireless internet is available, but we found it just as easy to use the hot spots on our T-Mobile and Verizon cell phones to download movies to our iPads using cell data. The location was perfect for our hiking and touring plans within 20 minutes of Copper Falls and about 75 minutes to Hayward (west), Hurley (east) and Bayfield (north). The ferry to Madeline Island is in Bayfield giving us access to Big Bay State Park on the island for more hiking. Pokenee Mountain Trail (hiking and cross country skiing) is also only 20 minutes away just inside Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Between the national forest and the North Country Hiking Trail you could hike or backpack for weeks. The owner left a 3 inch thick organized binder of area attractions, parks, activities, restaurants, etc on the kitchen table for our arrival. As we didn’t use any camping facilities, I can’t review them; but everything seemed to be as it should. If we ever venture back to far north WI we will surely...
Read moreWe had an excellent stay at this clean, well-run campground. Super friendly and helpful owner, she gave us extra printed information about the area when we told her we were there to explore nearby waterfalls. The lake is mesmerizing at midnight when the mist rises off of it in the moonlight. We were told there were otters and beaver in the area, and we saw a muskrat right off of the pier. On the lovely drive up we saw some deer, bald eagles and a black bear. Make sure to follow the directions to their property that they send to you when you reserve. You'll be on a paved road most of the way, but then it turns into a gravel road. If it's been raining, there can be a gigantic puddle of water that you'll have to drive through; it stretches across the entire gravel road. It is passable; it just looks really scary, especially if you're in a big RV. It took three days for that puddle to dissipate. Bring bug spray for sure because there is water all around the tent sites after a rain. The playground and outhouse bathrooms were closed due to Covid, but the main bathroom/shower building was open and clean. Not a high-end restroom, but not rustic either. Be aware of their cancellation and no-show policies. There are no refunds, but they give credit instead. We changed from an RV site to a Tent site and so had a little over $20 coming to us. So we used that credit to get three $6 bundles of firewood instead. Since it rained the day we got there, the firewood was damp. It took us about an hour to get our campfire going the first night. We had to shred up every cardboard box we brought with us to use as kindling. So we went into Mellen the next day and bought some firestarter logs at the convenience store....
