If you book reservations at Sand Bay Beach Resort make sure the owners are in town and on site! When we arrived on a Wednesday night not only was the beach a mess it also had a very dead rotten fish on it. We had to ask the staff to please remove the fish when we were told that the owners were away until Saturday and if they were here they clean, drag and take care of the beach at least twice a day. Needless to say we asked for rakes and took matters into our own hands so kids and adults could enjoy the beach and water without dead fish and loads of washed up seaweed and debris. Then to find out the owners had actually returned on Friday night and didn't bother to clean the beach until Sunday morning before our departure. I will admit the beach was absolutely inviting and pristine when they were done...what a pity we could not enjoy it. ||Then there are the rooms. For what you pay you have toilets that may or may not flush, broken toilet seats, towels that have seen better days, leaky faucets, cracks around the doors so you sleep with mosquitos and a/c units that are horribly out to date and can not keep up with the size of rooms. Much less to say where the a/c units are located and are not able to cool the suites properly (this is late July in Wisconsin - yes we have heat and humidity here as well!!!)||Oh and then the unprofessional staff. They seem to think that we are there to serve them instead of the other way around. The owners left one poor young staff member to serve the whole hotel while gone. Leaving her a beach she could not clean, a fish cleaning area closed (so someone left all their lovely fish remains outside the door and was not cleaned up until we complained about the horrible smell) and then replaced her with an older lady that was rude and patronizing.||Then to top it all off...since the beach was finally being cleaned the kids wanted to play in the pool which was to open at 8:00 a.m. - the owner decided to start cleaning the pool at 8:00 a.m. and finally allowed the kids in the pool by 10:00 a.m. when check out is at 11:00 a.m. ||Final word is do not book this hotel if you are looking for pleasant accommodations for the price. Lovely beach when owner is present and grooms the beach but the hotel as a whole needs some serious...
Read moreSand Bay is a great place to get from the cities and it is a quiet and private place. I love that they have a private beach there. So it's not crowded like a pool would be. I love that the owner is a fisherman's guide. So u get a discount on the room if u bring your own boat. The owners are always nice there and they always care about u and your group. It's away from the cities in door county. We stay every year now and get away from the noisy cities. The beach is great and great for the whole family. The kids get to play in the sand and some people are tanning or swimming in the water. We found out if u don't want to be there with a lot of crowds, don't be there in July or ice fishing season. So we like to be there in August. It is a big ice fishing place! Ice fishermen love that place. It's nice they have an indoor pool if it is cold or raining. They have camp fires so u can have s'mores or just relax around the fire. It's nice There are a lot of great places to shop or places to eat around there. They have rooms that are small for two beds or they have rooms that join together for larger groups. They have places in the room where u can store your stuff and food. They have small refrigerators for the small rooms and a big refrigerator for the joined rooms. It's nice they have a place to buy stuff if u forget something. They have outdoor tables for the joined rooms and a little table and two chairs for the small rooms. We love waking up early and they have a coffee machine so I want coffee in the morning u can have coffee. They even have a room inside to spend it if it's raining. They have a library of wanting to read up stairs. They have t-shirts to buy that say their name on it. A good pizza place near it is Sonny's! Good pizza and Italian stuff and they have a brewery downstairs to have a better after or before. So I will end by saying this is my favorite place in the Door County area! Thank u for having a great place to get away. Have a great day everyone! I love Wisconsin!...
Read moreStayed here recently with another family for a week. Front desk staff very nice and helpful. Fire pit areas are great! It is a very quiet resort. Indoor pool had a terrible odor. Sulfur water? Chemicals? Not sure, but bad enough some of the kids wouldn't even go in the first 2 days. It did get some better. Many reviews talk about the beautiful, clean beach. Mother Nature may very well have had a part in the seaweed and algae we had to walk thru to get into the water. Granted, they tried to clean it, but it never went away. I would not stay again- the main reason being the owner was a complete jerk from day one. He came in back and dumped the small amount of water in a blow up raft my daughter was playing in- after I asked him not to- as apparently he didn't like where it was. The porches should have a gate on them to get out the back. Unfortunately, it was very tempting for the teenagers to jump the 2 foot deck rail. The owner, who is expected to be professional and welcoming, yelled and ranted at the kids, and us, regarding the safety of this. I thought he was going to have a stroke at how much he yelled. It was very unprofessional. He seemed to be very worried about being sued if someone was injured. Unfortunately, he didn't worry about the missing board at the end of the dock that someone easily could have fallen thru. There was no sign of trying to cover this large hole in the dock. One evening they sponsored yoga and paddle boarding at their beach. It happened to be the same night we were cooking dinner on the fire and using the picnic table area. Certainly we would not have had a problem with this if they would have told their PAYING customers this before hand so we could have adjusted our dinner plans and/or timing. Instead we were walking thru a yoga class with our dinner plates. Rooms were OK. Towels smelled like mildew after one use. I never saw any free breakfast/coffee out. We made the best of our vacation, but I definitely feel like I overpaid for...
