A group of 18 friends from Kansas and Minnesota came up with the grand idea to celebrate a friend's milestone birthday over a long weekend in the Main Lodge. We arrived late on a Thursday and departed the following Monday. Most group vacations are like fish, after three days they start to go bad, but not this vacation. ||||Best part first: The owners, Jeff & Maria are fantastic hosts. We got a guided lake tour, went on a bald eagle sighting tour (saw four), and had a fully hosted fish fry which included all the fish we caught plus a few others provided by Jeff. They've anticipated most needs, and quickly accommodated the few that came up during the stay. Dog lovers have to leave their pets at home, but Zoey (Jeff & Maria's Golden Retriever) will hang out and let you pet her all day long. This is a free service and one she gladly provides.||||The Main Lodge is a historic logging camp and has incredible views of Pickerel Lake. 14 of us stayed in the Lodge, while four others set up in one of the smaller cabins. We had seven good sized bedrooms and three bathrooms upstairs (two with showers). An additional half bath downstairs ensured that everyone could get ready at their own pace. Hot water was plentiful and had good pressure. The bedrooms had plenty of dressers, shelves, and wall hooks to allow us to unpack and spread out a bit. ||||The first floor is comprised primarily of the kitchen, the dining area, and the Great Room. The fully equipped kitchen includes a gas stove, two full sized side by side refrigerators and pantry shelving to accommodate your supplies. The dining area has three dining tables, and enough chairs to allow everyone to eat at the same time. The Great Room has a beautiful wood burning fireplace and plenty of dry firewood is available for a nominal fee. Two couches face the fireplace, while four other couches are arranged with comfortable rockers and recliners to provide for four different lounge/conversation areas within the Great Room. Since the Lodge was originally constructed for purely utilitarian purposes, the first floor ceilings are a bit low in the Great Room and kitchen. ||||The grounds immediately surrounding the Lodge have a large recessed fire pit with sturdy split log seating for everyone staying in the group. Other free entertainment options include use of the paddleboat, canoe, kayak, and fishing boat. A pontoon boat w/outboard is available for a very reasonable fee. The lake is peaceful, serene and crystal clear. Fisherman will be glad to know that our three avid fisherman brought in a full stringer of northern pike and one small mouth that met the limit. Fishing licenses available in town, five minutes away. Non-Water sports that are available are basketball, tennis, and miles of groomed trails in the area. For the great Indoorsmen in your group, the Lodge has two upright pianos, a flat screen TV with DirecTV, and free Wi-Fi. There are lots of outlets throughout the Lodge to allow recharging of all your electronic gadgets. A full cabinet of board games and playing cards are also there in case the power goes out.||||There is absolutely no doubt that I will return to The Whispering Pines Resort with members of this group, as well as any other friends or family that are willing. My wife and I travel quite a bit and this is by far one of the most affordable, and overall the best vacation...
Read moreMy partner & I stayed for a week at Whispering Pines over the 4th of July, 2006. This property is downright beautiful. Consists of 6 log side-by-sides (like log cabin duplexes), a historic main lodge (that a large family or group can rent out), rental homes set back from the lake in the woods, and a small one-bedroom more "rustic" cabin for two. It is all situated on a quiet, natural, and undeveloped end of Lake Pickerel. Great location, feels "remote" but within easy driving distance (~5 minutes) to St. Germain. There is a tennis court (nicely maintained) as well as a fish filleting house for the serious angler. ||||The Norway "rustic" cabin is absolutely perfect for couples. It's only "rustic" because it does not have a dishwasher or central air/heat, and is a 3-season rental. Tastefully decorated with northwoods motif (moose sillouhette lamps, moose plates, etc.), it sports a newly remodeled kitchenette with sink, full-size fridge, cabinet space, nice dishware, all the pots/pans/ammenities needed. The bed was comfy, and a pine shelving unit in the bedroom provided plenty of space for our belongings. The bathroom was also remodeled, shower pressure was good with plenty of hot water. The cabin's original log walls are carved with the names of travelers dating back to the 1950's. There is a small gas-powered room heater (resembling a fire place) that provided plenty of warmth on cooler evenings. Also has a small television with local channels. I can't tell you how cute and charming this cabin is. We loved every inch of it.||||The Norway cabin has a furnished screen porch (great for board games and meals). It also comes equipped with a picnic table, weber grill and clay fire pit (as do the other rentals), which we used nightly. ||||Our hosts were generous & hospitable. Jeff delivered dry wood and some lighter fluid when we couldn't get our fire going the first night. He was also more than happy to help us beginner fisher-women get the hang of a new reel. Maria took time to talk and mingle with all the guests, and gave us a pair of souvenir mugs on the house. ||||There is a small, sandy beach for swimming, and a few different boat docks. Our hosts let us set fireworks off from the dock over the lake. Each cabin comes with a row boat, and you can pay to put a small motor on the back of it for a week. You can also rent their pontoon, "Old Blue", which putters around slowly but was great for a day of fishing and lounging on the lake. Other guests brought their own boats and there is a put-in right on the property. ||||This property was beautiful, on a relaxing, calm corner of the lake (no big waves, lots of privacy from the main boating area). Everything was spread out nicely, so you didn't feel like you were on top of your neighboring vacationers.||||I've camped and stayed at other cabins in this area of WI, and nothing came close to Whispering Pines. A true hidden gem. Will definately...
Read moreWe arrived early which was no issue. The cabin was in excellent condition and quiet with the common wall. There’s plenty of space between cabins and the cabins connect to handle larger groups. The views in winter were almost more breath-taking than in the summer. Absolutely great stay.. well furnished, clean cabin with plenty of space and beds to accommodate a small group or a larger one. Great Lake for fishing boating and fun! Lots of sand on the beach! The area is fantastic with thousands of lakes within an hour... more than (MN)! The shops in the towns are cute, quaint and fun for everyone unless your husband has a boat... this is a great place out of town but close enough to quickly get any and everything you need. Enjoy Minocqua without...
