So, it's long over due that I post this review and I guess I was hesitant because I don't really want too many people to know about how great this place is! I love the location on beautiful Lake Champlain, I love the challenges of the course, I love the cosy suites in the rustic cabins, the enjoyment of sitting outdoors with a fire burning and the BBQ going for that night's supper. Of course, if you prefer you can heat up a meal in the microwave, or go out to dinner as there are a number of places to eat in nearby Plattsburg.
Frankly I was surprised to read any negative reviews about the resort, and especially about the staff--it's a bunch of BS--they are great people and very helpful as is the owner Paul Dane who does his best to resolve all issues and in a timely manner. Chalk it up to unreasonable people with expectations that might be better reserved for high end fancy establishments--this is not a 300 dollar per night hotel, nor is it a snobbish spa located in Beverly Hills. This is a real place for real people and very affordable! If you have any clue about running and/or owning a business, especially a golf course, you'd know and understand how difficult a task it is, and you'd bite you tongue before complaining about things like a wet course after it rained--you're kidding right?! Paul and his crew are constantly making improvements but they cannot control the weather, nor is it reasonable to expect a refund or a rain-check if it rains! Honestly, that's not how it works and that information is clearly spelled out on the web site, as is the cancellation policy, which is very reasonable.
I first found out about this gem in 2009 and have been back there numerous times and will be there again as my last overnighter there this year (2014 June 2-3rd), was as enjoyable as ever. So please, if you would rather believe the negative reviews about this place, do us all a favour and stay away. That way I'll always have an easier time booking...
Read moreWent 5 times this spring and had 1 decent outing. Hence the 1/5 stars. 2 times we went in the afternoon and it was backed up like nobody's business. That was two ~5hr 30min games. They either double and triple book tee times or they just alow walk ons without tee times and it's stupid backed up. Teed off 25 and 35 min late each time.
To avoid the crowd, we decided to book the 6am tee time. Showed up and there were 4 groups of us with THE 6am tee time. Strange how multiple groups can book a single tee time... Pro shop advised, you guys will have to figure it out, you all booked the 6am.
Another time to avoid the crowd in the morning, we booked a 7am. The sprinklers were on at the first green and 2nd tee box to the point you couldn't really play the first hole and definitely could drive off the 2nd tee box. I called the clubhouse and told them they were still on and the guy said, "Yeah, they're on a timer. They will turn off soon." By the time we got to the 2nd green (after teeing off 15yards in front of the tee box), the "timer" pulled up in his cart, walked over, and manually turned them on right behind us. Ironic they're on a timer when there's a guy driving around turning them on and off....
By the 7th hole, we met up with their "timer" again, head to head this time to which he actually turned the sprinklers on as we were walking onto the green and sprayed us. We asked him to turn them off and at least wait for us to clear the green. We said there must be a better time to water the greens to which he replied, "I'm not coming in any earlier, you guys can deal with it." With some more push back he finally replied, "I didn't realize you guys were pros." With some other murmurs under his breath.
In summary, 1/5 acceptable visits, 1/5 stars. Slow pace is one thing but booking multiple tee times ontop of each other and having tee times running 25-35min behind is...
Read moreThis was my 2nd time here playing golf and staying in the cabins. We stayed in Cabin 110. It was definitely upgraded from our last trip. New bathroom, kitchen redone. New fridge.
I still don’t understand why they have 2 pull out couches in the living room, but you can only open one, because of lack of space. This trip I bought 2 blow up beds.
The course this year was a disappointment. The fairways were terrible. Dead blotches of grass all over the place. The tee boxes on this course are brutal. They’re not even close to being level. We played both sets of tees. Back tees and from the next tee up from the back. And the road leading into and out of “Bluff point” was unreal. A lot of pot holes, big ones, on both sides of the road. Deep ones.
Also during our round at 4:00pm on the 15 hole, the sprinklers were on by the green. Couldn’t putt out. We picked our balls up, and went to the next hole. Then on 18, right before our 3rd shots short of the green, the superintendent was standing right there on the hill, and turned the sprinklers on again. Didn’t finish the 18 hole either. It’s 4:00pm, the course is packed with golfers, it’s 69 degrees, and they’re watering the greens. Mind boggling.
We discussed after our round about leaving a day early, which we did. And we also said to each other, that’s our last trip to this place. It’s sad because it’s an AW...
