Other reviewers have called this a hidden gem. We would agree. We were greeted by friendly staff on arrival. I have never had this happen anywhere before but was given a complimentary bag of ice and a large bundle of firewood. What a nice surprise. Mike checked us in.
We were led to our site by Kim. He is very kind and easy going. I think we just happened to have gotten one of the best sites directly on the river. Site 69. I will say a tent or pop-up would have an easier time. Due to trees and a slope at one end it was a challenge getting our 29' set on the site with room for the awning and slide but it was well worth it. The site is actually spacious. Kim stayed to make sure we were ok on our site. He helped spot us when needed.
Some trash had been left in our firepit and Kim cleaned it up immediately with an apology. Not a big deal but nice to see that he wanted to take care of it right away.
The view was amazing. Pictures included here. They have river access and we got in on our tubes there. Was 20-30 minute float back to our site which is right next to another river access point.
They have a nice pool, basics in the store, some video games and small playground. There is a pavilion with picnic tables as well as volley ball and a large firepit. The weekend we were there they had live entertainment and a big bonfire.
The staff was very helpful when we needed something we had forgotten from home and directed us where we could get a replacement. On a special note, we had the absolute pleasure of meeting Kim and Donna (on staff) who were just outstanding people. Kim gave some great local info and directed us to the brewery nearby for drinks and a meal. He was very kind and helpful. Thank you for making our stay memorable in a good way. I hope we get back there.
The small town nearby has most everything you could need. Grocery store, general store, restaurants and gas. Note on gas-if you are towing or have a larger rig I suggest you get gas at the station closer to the highway off ramp north of town. The Stewarts in town is very tight. We saw a travel trailer V. Gas pump there that wasn't pretty. I would never have pulled in to even try it.
We have no complaints about our stay except that we wish we could have...
Read moreWe were on our way back to Toronto from Vermont and decided to stay a weekend in Lake George. We saw the reviews of Medcalf and decided this would be a good place.
Our inital impression was it was like we were going through a deep forest. There are a lot trees around and not much sunlight peaking through. There were a lot of old run down RV's as well. Kinda felt like a ghost town. However, we still decided to give this place a try.
The first night was very nice and calming. The second morning was great as well. The only reason I would give this place 1 star is because of the interaction we had with the owner.
The second day we went into town and we got an unforunate phone call. This resulted in us having to return back to the campground, pack up and leave back to Toronto right away. We explained this to the staff and they were so kind and understanding in regards to our situation. They told us that we could speak to the owner and that he could help us. We did just that.
As we were driving back, we texted the owner and explained our situation to him. We asked him if it was possible to get a refund as the situation at hand was out of our control. He responeded with they do not do refunds only credit. We told him we understand but in this case we were unsure if we would ever come back because 1. we are from Canada 2. this was a stop on the way home and 3. It was unlikely we would come to the same spot again which is much further away from us. He then responded with it "Never Expires".
I understand their policies but in circumstances that are beyond control, I felt a common ground could have been met. At least in the response given to us, he could've been more empathic. His responses sounded more like a cold-hearted person only out for money.
The only thing I would say is a positive of this campground is the kind and helpful staff who do not reflect on how the owner is. Maybe if the ownership changes or if the owner can be just as kind as the staff, I would consider giving this place a second chance. As of right now, it would be no for...
Read moreThe two stars are 100% for the fantastic people who work at and run this camp ground. They go above and beyond to friendly and helpful. My big complaint may not be there fault but it is still something I wish I had known before booking here.
This is the second summer we've visited Schroon Lake but the first time at this camp ground and it was a terrible experience. We stayed the second week of June and have this area is invested with mosquitoes. I've spent a lot of time in humid climates and have never seen so many mosquitoes in one place. When we left the campground, mosquitoes were not a problem. Our friends live right on Schroon Lake and they have never dealt with mosquitoes to this degree. Our kids attend camp 15 miles from this camp ground and they have never come home with multiple mosquito bites so while mosquitoes are everywhere this campground is in an extremely invested area, surrounded by dirty swampy water.
The problem was so bad that you couldn't open a door even to just walk out or in without 3-6 mosquitoes getting inside. We had to leave a day early because I had over 35 bites. I was sleeping in deet. We spent so much money trying to prevent and get rid of them and nothing helped. The problem was so bad that the day I left, I had to load luggage, and load my 2 year old in her car seat which meant a dozen of mosquitoes got in my car. I drove eight hours to PA, stayed in a hotel overnight, got in my car and there were still at least three mosquitoes! It was absolutely miserable and completely ruined our week bc we were so uncomfortable.
The camp ground has lots of playground equipment for little kids, but nothing here is new or modern.
I am back in the area again this week staying with friends, no...
