I have always loved staying at the Chanticleer Guest House in the past. I think it is a beautiful facility. I had booked a stay at the Hemlock Cabin August 2nd, 2020. Darrin, one of the innkeepers, canceled my stay for the night at the last minute because I had called at 4am to inquire if there were laundry facilities within the cabin. I was under the assumption that he had staff to take the calls after hours, but I was mistaken and I truly apologizefor that. I didn't know he didn't have staff like other B&Bs I've stayed at like The Foxglove Inn, which is impeccably gorgeous and the owners there are such sweethearts. My friend and I had purchased food to grill and it was expensive so we had to waste it because Darrin cancelled our booked stay and said we are no longer welcome there in the future. I was heartbroken. I wasted so much time planning for it and then I had to waste hours finding another place to stay in Door County last minute and it was impossible to find a place other than a cheap motel. My whole trip was ruined for me and my guest. I previously thought Darrin was a nice guy but I think he was petty and vengeful for canceling on me at the very last minute. I took the day off work to be there and couldn't find another place to lodge because most places in Door County need to be booked well in advance. I stayed at the Grand Suite twice in the past which had a wood burning fireplace and the Oak Cottage, which was beautiful. Darrin was angry that I took a couple logs from outside to start a fire, even though I couldn't get it started up, so in actuality I didn't burn that wood. I do prefer it on the cooler side, so I set the thermostat to the room down while I was packing up to check put but he didn't like that I did that either. I was going to change it back before I left but it was too late because he yelled at me for it. These small things are very petty. Be prepared that if he doesn't like you, he will cancel you just prior to your making the drive there. I love the cabins and some of the suites. I just wish Darrin was nicer and could listen to my point of view instead of fuming and cutting me off short to not hear my reasoning. He also accused me of being on something when I called, but I work shift work and again, was under the assumption he had staff manning the desk after hours. I wish things were different because the facility is gorgeous but I was disrespected and couldn't find a stay last minute in door county, so he ruined my whole trip and it wasn't even my guest's fault.
Before booking ask yourself this: would you want to stay at a place where the host can cancel your reservation just prior to your arriving for petty reasons and waste your family's time and money that is involved in taking time off work, gas, and then spend hours calling places to see if anywhere else has vacancies last minute?
**Darrin, next time give your guests at least a 24 hour notice that you are going to cancel their reservation. You expect your guests to give you prior notice if they need to cancel, so why should it be any different for you? That was very rude of you to cancel hours before we were already driving up there, especially since my call at 4am wasn't intended to wake you up; it was a question for the front desk staff, which I thought was...
Read moreThe Chanticlear Guest house is a spot not to be missed. Just outside the downtown area of Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin, the owners Dawn and Rick have masterly taken over as new owners of this magnificent place a few years ago. The 8 suites....well, one is better than the next. Rooms are so well appointed and decorated just perfectly for that warm, homey feel yet away, restful, and welcoming. Plenty of outdoor space-balconies or patios, an amazing pool with pool towels and different kinds of floaties. A fire pit area Rick will set up for you. A groomed walking trail, I believe a few miles long. Just beautiful sights and sounds. The grounds are stunning with many acres of flowers and lush gardens. Breakfast served in your room, or like us most days poolside for hours of lounging with coffee and homemade breakfasts: usually egg bakes or French toast bakes, all of which are delicious. There is the main house and the barn. Both have lobby areas with a keurig and pods. Plenty of extra cups, mugs, glasses, plates, and silverware. Pop and water and some snacks available for purchase. Small bags of ice are available for drinks. And every day, a plate of homemade chocolate chip cookies emerge late afternoon as a delicious sweet treat. There are umbrellas and fishing rods. Dawn and Rick have dinner and activity recommendations. And they do an amazing job accommodating certain needs (one in our group has celiac and can't have gluten-all taken care of!). Many great restaurants close by in Sturgeon Bay. The location is also a great home base to explore the rest of the county. In June 2024, I was there 6 nights with friends, and this year, 7 nights with friends again. Everyone has their own beautifully appointed rooms and plenty of space to hang together. Immaculately clean. Amazing oversoze tubs. Super comfy beds. I can't say enough about this place. It is a hidden gem. Tell them Jacquie Steuer Sent you! I might see you there as well....I...

Spent a long weekend with another couple in the Evergreen cabin. This place is fantastic!I t’s basically a fully furnished home with AC, 3 fireplaces, washer/dryer and dishwasher. You could stay here for weeks and have everything you need to be happy. The property is neat as a pin inside and out. The linens were plush and abundant in both of the full size bathrooms. Each bath has a large 2-person rain shower! The master bedroom also has a ginormous hot tub right next to the fireplace. The private deck off the kitchen includes patio furniture, swing, gas grill and loungers and it all overlooks a gorgeous field of wild flowers and a pond. The sound of the birds in the morning was transcendent. My friends birdsong identification app was working hard to keep up with all of the different species. The croaking of the bull frogs at night had us wandering down to the secluded pond with a glass of wine from the area vineyards to settle into the Adirondack chairs by the nightly fire pit. The cabins are spaced far apart with lots of tree cover and each one feels completely private. The owners of the property are incredibly gracious and friendly hosts who are easily accessible and can be found hard at work on one project or another. We arrived on a Thursday evening and saw the beginnings of a bridge being built on the pond in our backyard. Well it’s Sunday morning and it’s completely done! 🤯 And of course they were building the bridge with split trees found on the property!?! We woke up each morning to a hot yummy breakfast that was delivered to our cabins in a picnic basket. Think French Toast, Egg bake and fresh berries with whipped cream alongside a carafe on OJ. Come on people, that’s next level service! We truly loved our stay and I hope to come back next summer. That is if the place isn’t sold out after this review because it’s just that magical! Book your trip here, you...
