I booked a room for just me and my dog over Thanksgiving weekend for a little mini vacation while my kids & husband went to visit my mother-in-law. When I checked in on Thanksgiving Day, I promptly locked myself out of my room while unloading my car and had to call the owners to let me in. I told them that if they were in the middle of dinner, I would be happy to take a hike for a while and meet them later, but they insisted that they were only a few minutes away and would see me in 5 minutes.
The first room had a queen bed, full sofa & kitchenette and was clean and comfortable if a little bit dated in decor. I slept well and took off early the next morning with a full mug of coffee brewed in the hotel room and drove a little north to catch the sunrise at Jacksonport Beach. Shortly after breakfast, I got a call from my husband who said that his mom wasn't feeling well after their couple of days visiting her, and could they come to join me in Door County?
I called the hotel office line which transferred to the owners at home - I told them my predicament as I didn't want to have 4 people + a dog in a room with just a queen bed without their permission. They asked me to give them a few minutes to see what they could work out and called a little later to let me know that they had a room with 2 double beds that they could move us to so we could be more comfortable. This room also had a kitchenette and table but did not have a couch since there were two beds. The kitchenette is wonderful to have - especially with a family as we can get breakfast into the kids before traipsing around the peninsula.
The second room was just as clean and comfortable as the first and the photos on the hotel's website are good representations of what they look like. They have porches with sliding glass doors, which face the woods. There was enough room for the kids to play between the beds and the TV stand/dresser (they're 3 & 6) and they loved having the playground area to blow off a little last bit of steam at the end of the day.
The hotel was quiet while we were there (we seemed to be one of only 3-4 rooms booked over this weekend) and the peninsula had tons of family-friendly activities from great shopping to Holly Days in Egg Harbor, complete with Santa's arrival on a fire truck, and finally, all the great light displays after dark.
All-in-all, I would absolutely book here again. I thought the lodge was very budget-friendly compared to other options on the peninsula, and it was conveniently located with easy access to Sturgeon Bay as well as to some of our favorite hiking trails mid-peninsula (Cave Point, Ridges Sanctuary & one of the Door County Land Trust trails we love). It was also an easy drive to all the action with Holly Days in Egg Harbor. The fact that this lodging also had a kitchenette with a full fridge and stove/oven was a kicker to the convenience and comfort our...
Read moreI wanted to take a quick vacation up in Door and had passed by the Runaway on other trips so thought I'd try it out. It's located right on Hwy 57 - easy to find. Check-in was simple. Ron and Mary (owners) stopped by as I was bringing my stuff into the room. Ron had put a tray of ice cubes in the mini fridge freezer (no ice machine in the office but the BP is just across the side street - and there was a brat sale at the BP as well!). |The room was spacious, clean, and well laid out. There's a sink with mirror outside of the bathroom with hairdryer, soaps, etc. There's also a sink in the bathroom. The tub was a nice size and the shower/hot water was perfect.|Each unit has a little deck with a couple of chairs and a table. They face a little wooded area. |The bed was very comfortable. I slept the best I've slept in a long time! |The microwave worked like a charm and there's a 2-slice toaster in the room as well as a coffee maker. |I'd highly recommend staying at Runaway Lodge @ Valmy. It's close to so much (Valmy Happy Hour is about a minute away by car/3 mins by foot) and it's a clean, comfy place to...
Read moreI was super nervous when I was able to find a place available the day I wanted to stay in Door Co. I had a terrible experience with a hotel in Sturgeon Bay last summer, so naturally I was hesitant to book a room. When we walked into the room I was very impressed. I do a thorough check to make sure the room I'm staying in is clean before I unpack. I walked down to the desk to hand the paperwork to the owner. I asked when the updates were done. The one I was in still smelled off paint, that's how recent. Both the owners were present and very pleasant. I had a nice chat with the gentleman as i packed back up to head home 2 days later. He asked how our stay was, if there was anything that we needed and if there was anything that needed attention. He had a paint bush in hand haha! He said he's been working on updates for quite a while. I did not see any other rooms, so I cannot confirm that they're all as clean as the room my husband and I stayed in, but I would...
