Starlite Motel — Hotel in Town of Shandaken

This motel is located near Bellayre ski area. It's a 50's/60's style motel. The rooms open to the parking lot in the front and the back door opens to a backyard that's available to guests. The room I stayed in was still old style but with nice beds and bedding. All rooms have a kitchenette and I was able to cook breakfast every morning and could package lunch to take daily. That saved me a lot of money. The back yard has 2 Adirondack style chairs for relaxing. Every room has a picnic table and charcoal grill to use. There is also a fire pit for all to use and a screened in room to use to escape from bugs. The only reason I didn't give the max stars is because there was an issue with not having hot water for one shower. I wouldbe remiss if I did not mention a faint musty smell. The charm of the welcome basket that contained marshmallows for roasting and various granola bars etc. and the basket of toiletries in the bathroom were very nice touches. The water to bathe is very bad because while you bathe it changes from hot to cold and from cold to hot without you touching it, then you either freeze or you burn. In the back of the room people from other rooms sit on the chairs that are in your room and smoke there, all those bad odors enter your room (they have no control that each person who stays uses their own place to sit and thus does not hinder others) the wifi signal they have does not work, you can be for days without wifi. And the cell phone signal doesn't get there, you have to drive to Margaretville 16 minutes away so that your cell phone has a good signal. In addition, the air conditioning stinks of fungus when you turn it on, even if you try to wash it yourself, it continues with that plague. And finally, even if you have the "do not disturb" on your door, the person in the office takes the audacity and knocks on your door as if he did not see the "do not disturb" on. Returning to the Starlite Motel felt like coming home. Years ago, I stayed here with my partner and our dog and it left such a warm memory that I hoped the magic would still be here and it absolutely was. My suite was perfect, a fully equipped kitchen, a full bathroom, and every comfort you could want. The backyard is stunning, with picnic tables, grills, and Adirondack chairs, perfect for relaxing.
