Me and my husband went to this camp ground for a weekend get away ( Friday-Sunday). I picked this location because it had good ratings and there was only one site left for the weekend. It was our first time in the Catskills we usually camp in the Adirondack’s. The camp site was a family size which was fine even if we didn’t need the space. The activities they offered were only near the front of the camp grounds near the office that includes the beach ( lake), the row boats and hiking trail. The front of the camp grounds was nearly 4 miles from our site! All the sites on that side of camp were booked out and now I know why. There was no reception for camp grounds at spruce grooves side but the other side had it. We were told if we need anything to just call but that wasn’t an option with no reception. The trails on this side were barely marked. The camp grounds is split into two section with the 4 mile gap mentioned and a street that runs through the camp grounds that constantly has cars running by all night long, the road is used as a back roads by the towns people. I wouldn’t recommend this site to anyone unless they can get a low number spot camp ground spot and even then if they have children with the constant busy road of car and motorcycles right next to the camp grounds I wouldn’t recommend it. Also we didn’t see one animal while we were there except maybe a bird or two on our way out. Overall it was a camping experience not the best I’ve ever had. The only pro is that the staff was nice when we...
Read moreWe started our stay in the Catskills here at Bear Spring Mountain State Campground - 512 E Trout Brook Rd Downsville, NY – it’s actually between Walton & Shinhopple. This was a perfectly fine little campground, we don’t like anything fancy. This campground has two sections (upper & lower) –we stayed at the lower. We arrived on Saturday and left Tuesday morning, and the first night was the only night there were any other campers. It was very, very quiet there, very relaxing. Actually we observed later how we hardly even heard any nature noises, no insects or birds (except for a catbird who loved the bush near our tent, a Bard Owl I heard 2 nights, a deer who did not like finding us in the middle of her path one morning). However if you do stay at the lower campground know that is the section where people can bring their horses and well it can smell like it :). There are trails but mostly met for horse and are all pretty steep (and we are out of shape and I'd been sick for awhile). We did walk around the pond, it was quite wet (so be prepared). We tried to do the one level hike from the lower campsite but you had to cross a small creek and we didn't want our feet soaked. Also the bathroom was just a drop toilet and no sink (or shower). The tent sites do have water nearby but after it sat for a day in our water jug there was sediment. :( Also you have to go to the upper section to check in, and discard your garbage, and there is about 3.5 miles between the...
Read moreGREAT PLACE!!! We just stayed Friday-Monday at this campground. We first booked on the second loop which is 3.5 miles up the road away from amenities (shower, wash station, showers) and has no trees between any of the sites. We went to the staff and they helped change our site immediately.
The staff A+++, always driving around, checking on us, cleaning/stocking bathrooms, sweet and caring.
The sites: It’s a 50/50 wether or not you’re gonna get a good one first time coming. I recommend the first loop and the ones on the top of the map for the best options. We had site 2 which was really nice, just hear the cars whip down the road but did not bother me. Some sites I would not even consider sites and they should not even offer them up for reservations just walk-ins. (Which they allow)
The shower/bathroom pavilion: was nice and never had a problem or had to wait, only Saturday after dinner but all sites were filled so it makes sense. They were cleaned every night and well kept.
Day Use area/trails: Nice and well kept, we did fishing and paddle boarding on the Gorgeous lake. We also did the hike right off RT 206 (1 mile up the road from the campground) and it was a beautiful 2 hr hike.
We would come back again!! Packed on weekends, weekdays are empty. Overall...
