Wing's Castle is truly unique, a great work of creative genius. The effort that went into building this amazing structure is incredible. Walking the grounds produces a new discovery each time! The proprietress, Toni Ann Wing, is an exceptional person herself and provides a wonderful tour when you stay there. The place is rurally located, and the small towns nearby are friendly and inviting. It is only half an hour from the Hyde Park area where one can visit the Frederick Vanderbilt mansion, FDR's home and presidential library (which was very infirmative), and the Ogden Mills/Ruth Livingston home (hosting a fabulous antique car show in the month of October (around 500 cars!) And an hour south in Tarrytown is Lyndhurst, a beautiful mansion once owned by Jay Gould, and Washington Irving's home of Sleepy Hollow fame. The town of Millbrook has a great little diner, and in October in the next town over, Stanfordville has a local weekend nighttime haunted Halloween "tour" that was decidedly simple, but different and fun. Toni's husband, Peter, was instrumental in building the very cool props on this Halloween trail throughout the years.||Each of the rooms at Wing's Castle are different and unique. One is the Dungeon and the other is the Chamber. A two-story fairytale house is also available with a kitchen, and across the road by the pond is a chalet type building for two couples (or just one couple) with a kitchen. There is also a mini Stonehenge overlooking the valley below, with table and chairs in the center to watch the gorgeous sunset each night. We asked Toni Wing how on earth they managed to get those large upright stones into the ground, and the answer was "two elephants" who happened to be grazing in the pastures as a retreat from the carnival scene for a few months. She was full of really interesting information, and it was an absolute treat to see a few rooms in her home, the original part of the castle that she and husband Peter built.||No question about it, we will definitely go back...
Read moreWing’s Castle. Where to even begin?? If you think you know, I promise you…you don’t. This whimsical oasis in the Hudson Valley may hands down be the most memorable stay I’ve ever had. Although a bit more challenging to book than the usual accommodation, I cannot emphasize how worth the extra work is to stay in this special place (just ask any of my friends and family, I’ve been RAVING about it since our trip there last month!!) Toni is welcoming and accommodating, ensuring that we had everything we could need while we were there and always tossing a recommendations for a new place on the grounds that we’d yet to explore. Although the pictures do represent the eclectic-nature of the castle, what you don’t feel until you arrive is just how classy and cozy the rooms truly are. We stayed in the cottage the attention to detail was truly astounding. Every inch of the place feels beautifully curated down to the vintage kitchenware and the binoculars in the sunroom (which you can frogwatch from!) Another thing that the pictures just simply cannot do justice to is the utter SCALE of the castle which you’re free to roam at any time of day. Exploring the grounds at night and watching the sunset at the mini Stonehenge (accompanied by our new friend Rabbit the cat!) will be continue to be some of my favorite travel memories ever. One last thing that you absolutely should not miss while you’re staying there is Toni’s tour. Hearing the tales of how the castle was built from her perspective was so unbelievably wonderful. We’re so grateful we stumbled upon this gem and hope that people get to stay here for many...
