I want to start with one small caveat. You can't do half stars and I really want to give Nicks Lake 4.5 stars so consider this a 4.5 star review. Nicks Lake loses a half star for one and only one reason. The water pressure at the dump station is insufficient to properly clean black tank using factory installed tank washers. Virtually every other campground I have been to has had plenty of water pressure. What makes this a real bummer is I have a feeling this isn't a limitation in the sense that they CAN'T make enough pressure, I think they are actively throttling the pressure. This makes getting your black tank flushed out virtually impossible. Oh you can empty it well enough to get out of the park, but we always have to go to another camp ground to finish flushing out the tank. If not for this one issue, Nicks Lake would be 5 stars all day long in my book.

Nicks Lake is one of thee best camp grounds that we have ever been to for pure ambiance. Having old forge and inlet (among many other things) on your doorstep is fan-frickin-tastic. The lake itself is a picture of perfection. No motors allowed. But the wife and I can paddle the entire circumference of the lake in 3 hours or so. Mind you, that's paddling at an old mans pace and a SportsPal stone barge to boot. We go to Nicks lake multiple times a year and to be perfectly honest, while variety is the spice of life, I wouldn't be too chuffed if its the only park we went to in a camping season. We go there 2-3 times out of 6 total trips each year.

Things you can nearly count on. Loops C, D, E are where it's really at for RV's. You can get in on A and B but IMHO, they are more for tenting and the ambiance isn't quite as good as C, D and E. The last three loops you can get essentially any 21' camper in. They have some larger sites as well, but 21' seems to be a real sweet spot. The bathrooms are virtually brand new. I typically always have 2-3 bars of cell service. Once in a while you will get in a site where cell service is problematic, but basically I never have issues with cell service. On the one occasion where it was an issue, we have booster antenna on a 25' pool that takes care of that issue. They keep the sights picked up and there are very VERY little problems with unwanted animals. Something that can't be said at another campground not very far away. There is no electric or water as it's DEC of course, but hey, that's what generators are for. The people have always been friendly and they don't poke their noses in your business unless your asking for it. If one of them stops at your site, you dun screwed up. Lastly, the sights are all pretty dagum level for a DEC campground. We have never had an issue leveling our trailer. Most sites are plenty big enough to get a screen tent in and a tent as well. Not all, but most.

If anyone at Nicks Lake reads this, please consider bumping up the pressure at the dump station. That would make me a particularly...

Much better campground than Fish Creek Pond. That one was a serious disappointment. The sites are mostly better spaced here at Nick's Lake Campground, there's no motor boats on the lake here, so none of that kind of noise, and this has modern shower facilities, and many of them where Fish Creek Pond only had one.

The showers here, you can hold the button in to keep it to stay on.

Fish Creek Pond had no grille grates for it's campsite camp fires, this has them. Though here, they are raised high so you need to use a lot of wood. You can't cook with kindling easily. Cumberland Bay State Park had the low ring shaped campfire emplacements where you could cook with kindling.

The beach itself was nice, the buildings adjacent to it were a little run down.

The recycling and garbage site was well organized.

I wasn't an RVer but this place seems to be popular for them. Did not notice any electrical hook ups along the multiple sites I walked passed by.

There's a trail along the lake that is on the difficult side. On the map it may not look long, but it winds a bit, has sharp hills, muddy parts, and large tree roots that can be tripped over.

There's a foot bridge over what appears to be an inlet to the lake that people were fishing off of. This bridge is also part of a trail.

By the beach there is a modern playground. There are also picnic tables and elevated grilles. The grilles here you can get by with some kindling or charcoal.

Some camp sites seem close to the lake where you can keep a canoe or kayak.

I liked this place, Nick's Lake Campground and Cumberland Bay State Park, both good experiences.

Oh and you might hear something that sounds like a coyote or wolf howl, it is probably more likely the Loons, a type of large bird that is...

We have been going to Nicks for the 4th of July for many years now and always enjoyed the park, what happened ? The park was a mess, the facilities were gross and not kept up with at all and they smelled horrible. The Showers were gross and they don’t stock up on TP (we bring our own just incase) There was garbage everywhere for the few days we stayed so we decided to pick most of it up ourselves because the workers obviously “overlooked”it. You couldn’t even find an employee unless you went to the check in area and even then the few that were there didn’t want anything to do with you unless you wanted to buy ice. Though we did see one but they were too busy racing around in their little cart. This used to be a beautiful park and I mean really nice but something changed and it’s gone downhill. It’s not just us, other campers we talked to noticed the change as well and 2 different groups said it was like that last month as well. Even the grass was high and we were afraid of ticks so we kept the kids away from those areas which was hard sometimes with people speeding around now. Someone is going to get hurt. Not sure if the state cut funding or what but after talking to others that said it’s been like this all season, maybe it’s time to find another state park. Sad, we really...

Campsites are spaced out from each other there are lots of trees between sites. (One tree fell in the night during a storm into the road and they were very prompt to clear it up) The lake is beautiful and very quiet. There are lots of chipmunks, red squirrels, we saw a bald eagle and loons. We saw a newt in the lake as well! It is far enough from Old Forge that you can avoid the crowds but close enough to stop in for any of their attractions. Showers are amazing (at least in loop D), you can adjust the heat, they were very clean, and had lots of space. Great place to kayak, paint by the lake, hike, have smores, water was quite warm and so relaxing.

Nicks Lake Campground – Adirondack Perfection We had a great three-night stay at Nicks Lake Campground. Our site was perfectly situated, with just the right amount of space between neighbors for a peaceful, private feel. The lake itself is gorgeous—calm, scenic, and perfect for a quiet paddle or just soaking in the view. One of the best parts is the location: just a quick hop into Old Forge for supplies or a meal, and right around the corner from McCauley Mountain. The bathrooms were impressively clean and well-maintained, making the stay even more comfortable. I can’t wait to come back with the mountain bike and hit the trails in the area.
