My wife and I drove from Minnesota to spend 2 days at the Castle in the Country Bed and Breakfast. It was a long drive, but totally worth it. First off all the rooms were exactly as shown on the website and were just as beautiful. The bed was comfortable along with the bedding being very soft. My suite included a whirlpool that came with complimentary bath beads and not to mention they had soft water(If you never had soft water it is very nice, it makes your skin feel really clean and soft; hotels have hard water and it always irritates my skin after a shower). So I though that was another great touch. With your stay they give you breakfast between 8AM and 10 AM at what ever time you choose. When you go down to get your breakfast there are serval tables but one is just set up waiting for you to eat at. It was really inviting and felt as though you were just visiting family and they were waiting for you to come down. The food was also very delicious and served in a very elegant manner, with great presentation and amazing flavor. While you are down to eating breakfast someone sneaks up to your room and puts it back in order without you knowing, so when you're done with your food and go back to your room everything is just as beautiful as it was as when you first got there! Besides the room we went to a nearby town called Holland that was cool to visit and we ate at the 8th Street Grille. My wife and I shared a burger and each enjoyed one of their micro brews together. Then we went and saw Lake Michigan after that at Castle Park. We wanted to go horse back riding, but we couldn't get ahold of the owner to make a time to do it. My suggestion would be if you decide to you want to go horse back riding call a day in advance. We didn't think about that until later. So we continued on to what we were going to do next, Skiing! If you order passes through the B & B then you get a better deal on the lift pass so we did that. Then we went skiing for about 4-5 hours at the Bitter Sweat Ski Resort. It was great! There were not too many people as it was a Tuesday. After that we went to The Grill House just north of the B & B. We had a great meal there as well. All in all, we had a great time! There was quite a bit of stuff to do and we wish had more time do it. Ruth was very kind. Check in was between 4-6 EST and we weren't going to make it by that time so she made accommodations so that we could stop at Brewsters in Paw Paw on the way up. She knew we were hungry and were going to probably head back out after checking in so she said "just go eat first then come up and check in that way you don't have to back track." I thought that was a very nice gesture. I booked my stay in January and the price per night was $240. While we were there we noticed a promo on Facebook that they just posted 3 days before our actual stay. We asked if they would honor that promo. They said normally it would have to be referenced while booking, but they said that they would honor it for us.This kind gesture saved me $200. It is obvious to me that the Castle In The Country is not only a business to make make money, but they also want to make sure that they take great care of their guests even at their expense, which I find to be rare and a great business trait. We had a wonderful time and I will recommend Castle in the Country to others. This is my first B&B experience and I now plan on visiting many more because of my experience at Castle in the Country, but I have a strong feeling that maybe Castle In The Country may have set the bar so high that I may have too high of expectations when I visit others. :) Thank you Castle In The Country for the great...
Read moreThis is easily one of the most beautiful places I've ever stayed at, the views, the room ( I stayed in the King Arthur Suite), the trails, the peddle boating experience, the gourmet breakfast, everything so very visually appealing. Melina is one of the innkeepers and her customer service is above and beyond, she was very sweet and had a very gentle spirit about her. Our initial arrival and being greeted by Melina made me feel reassured that I had picked the perfect place to treat my love for her birthday. The reason I subtracted 2 stars was not the grounds, they deserve 5 stars. It was Ruth, she seemed very uncomfortable when speaking to me. Maybe they've never had a Lesbian couple stay at this property, maybe she was offended by my sexuality or by me for some reason but she appeared to be very uncomfortable when she addressed me and my partner. She also kind of hovered over me while I was making a cup of tea and figuring out how to use one of the brewing machines and even butted in and suggested I use another machine that just let out hot water like I was some idiot or something, that really ticked my partner off. Another thing is EVERYTIME I called the front desk with a question, most of the time a general question...I was asked what room I was staying in which I thought was odd. One time I called simply because I could not locate a large trash can so I could properly clean the room before we vacated as we had some large boxes and leftover food containers to throw away, she seemed agitated that I was even asking. I called with a question about the peddle boat and she again asked me what room I was staying in, it was just weird because it had nothing to do with my question. It's almost as if they determined how they would service your inquiries based on the room you stay in. Also I inquired about buying a bottle of wine I saw, and they didn't sell it and I nicely said okay and that Melina had pointed me to some wineries that I would go to and she suggested that I could go to rite aid around the corner. Lol!! I mean sheesh, Ruth! I understand you may not be used to what you saw, or maybe just not accepting or open to it, but we are highly educated professional women aside from what meets the eye. We wanted to indulge in the real deal too! That's why we traveled and paid as much as we did! Because we could! I can figure out how to use a brewing machine and I can damned well afford an expensive bottle of wine! Shame, because initially I was ready to make this a regular place on our lists. But maybe minds are a tad to small and closed for me!!! Beautiful Beautiful property!!! Aside from those things that rubbed me and my partner the wrong way, we still made the best of it and had a beautiful memory filled time!!! But we will take our hard earned money somewhere more accepting!!! However thank you for our stay, if it weren't for Melina and the the guy that works around the castle keep, geeze I probably would've given 1 star. How someone makes me feel when I'm spending my hard earned money on their business is so important to me!! Thank you Melina, We still had...
Read moreWe stayed in the Camelot suite. The property and room were beautiful. It was a great place to stay in terms of the facilities. Breakfast was good each morning. The lake was clean and quiet and made for a nice afternoon of casual kayaking. However, I was disappointed in the lack of options and flexibility for the price that I paid. I booked an additional package that included a couples "Chocolate Bliss Massage." First, I'm not sure why they named it this because chocolate is not involved at all. More importantly, there was no flexibility to schedule a massage time. I was told 10am-11am on one given day was the only time I could get the massage. There was only one other couple staying at the resort with us, so even though they contract hire massage therapists, I would think they could provide at least a little flexibility. I also asked what the cost of having a picnic basket put together for us to take out one day would be and was told they only did that for one particular package. I just paid $1,200 to book two nights and a massage and asking to pay a little extra for a picnic basket wasn't an accommodation they could step up for? I booked the trip to propose so I asked that the welcome gift of wine and chocolates not be delivered until our 2nd night and asked that they be left later in the evening after I knew we would be gone from the room for the proposal. They could only drop it off shortly after 6pm, so when we had to stop back in the room between dinner and the proposal the gift was already waiting. Lastly, and incredibly disappointing, was that I paid a good amount of money for a package that included a "Secluded space indoor or outdoor decorated and reserved specifically for your engagement." I spoke with them in advance about proposing in the evening at the screen house by the lake. I expected it to be nicely decorated. Taylor, whom I spoke with at booking, said they'd be sure the screen house would be "lit up and look nice" when we arrived. Imagine my disappointment to walk down the evening ready to propose to see a typical screen house you might find in the woods at any campground NOT decorated, NOT lit up, and didn't even have lights! Luckily, sitting on the dock itself and watching the sunset was quite a nice view and the proposal went great anyways, despite being let down by the resort. It's really a shame. They have everything there to make it an over the top romantic getaway, but fall short on the amazing service and ability to customize your romantic getaway as the website describes. Especially to pay for a proposal package and not even have them come through on the most critical part of it. Again, the place is absolutely beautiful but I will not be back. I paid a premium price, for...
