I’ve just returned from the 2.5 hour drive from Oakland to Orr for the second time. This place is pure magic! They offer all kinds of accommodations including camping platforms, yurts, cabins, and the creek house cottage.
I prefer the cabins because they come with a private bathroom, kitchen, dining room, and bedroom; perfect after a long soak in the hot springs and you want the comforts of home while in a rustic environment.
Not having service or WiFi is a huge plus because it’s truly a nervous system reset not being distracted by notifications or the urge to doom scroll social media. The other attractive features include preparing your own meals.
I love to cook and having fun making comfort food and eating outside with other guest is a great way to decompress and do people things like talk about the weather and share stories of past adventures.
The community kitchen has tools not found in the cabins so check it out, preparing ingredients on the large counters then cooking in the cabin is a fun way to hybrid your experience.
I recommend driving down the way and walking the trails of Montgomery Woods. It’s an extremely quiet place and has the most prehistoric feel and breathtaking perspectives of ancient redwood trees far from the ocean (it’s unique, look it up) that survived a fire with the scars to prove it. The plaques throughout the forest will inform you of its history and the people who influenced its preservation.
After a good long hike around the forest, the bathhouse is the best next destination. Disrobe to your comfort level (it’s clothing optional), rinse off at the communal showers, then step into one of the many pools or amenities. The hottest pool has the water fall and is closest to the showers, the second pool is cooler for those who need to gradually enter hot water or cool off from the hot pool.
The swimming pool is cooler and refreshing. The single pool connected to it is comfortable and warm. The steam room and dry sauna are in the back and have special hours, are clean, and well maintained. The personal tubs scattered around the bathhouse are nice and hot, perfect for night time soaks.
NOTE: you can soak alllll night if your choose. They close the doors from 10am to 12pm everyday so a 3:14am soak isn’t unheard of.
The view of the starts at night is breathtaking, especially in a mineral hot spring personal tub on the observation deck. I count the satellites and shooting stars I can see when I’m soaking and you should give it the old try too. Overall, this is a true...
Read moreThe drive there is beautiful and I stopped to take pictures. Stunning. I really enjoyed the it. ||||The woman who talked to me over the phone and the one that checked me in was really nice. The rest of the staff was a bit snarky. Overall I didn't feel very welcomed by the staff or most of the people there. Most of the staff acted like you were bothering them when you asked questions. The whole place felt very clickish which surprised me. ||||I was by myself so I am glad I only stayed one night. If I was with friends/romantic partner then it would be a different story. ||||I stayed in a yurt which was nice but pricey for what it was- around $170 a night. Not worth what they charge since the room doesn't include a bathroom, towels, robe, etc. I had to go outside in a separate bathroom. Would have been nice for them to supply a flashlight in the room. It did include the hot springs, which was nice because I heard the day rate is around $60. ||||I saw one of the rooms with a bathroom and it was really outdated and janky looking. It was priced more than the yurt because it had a bathroom but it was kind of ewww. I'll nicely call it 'rustic'. ||||The springs were nice and I enjoyed them overall but I was hoping that they would be more in nature which is my personal preference. The springs area is like a spa/resort and it isn't very big- except for the very large cold tub. It's fine but more tubs and more in nature would have been nice. Depends on what you are looking for. ||||And unlike a resort, you have to bring your own towels and they don't provide a robe. You have to rent one. This should be included with the price in my opinion. ||||It wasn't really crowded when I was there since the busy season hadn't started yet however I imagine it wouldn't be much fun (since the tub area is small) when it is busy. Take this into account if you decide to visit here since it's quite a trek to reach the place- around 12 miles from the main road. ||||Quiet hours start early (in my opinion) and a guy from the staff walked around yelling at people to be quiet. He was actually louder than anyone else which was a bit annoying. ||||Overall I am glad I visited but I don't plan on going back unless I am with a group of people or my man. I definitely didn't feel...
Read moreThe place I never want to leave. If I could I'd live there just like one of the cats. Beautiful area in any season. Sit in the deck tubs and watch the falling snow or a sunrise. Spend the night moon gazing..just be quiet about it. Walk down the road and take in the beauty. Started going to Orr as a child in the early 80s loved the old tubs and tile work. Its where I got engaged on a romantic weekend for 2 spent a week for our 30 years together anniversary. I couldn't have been happier. Not sure whats changed since covid ..but tubs were always cleaned first thing in the morning the kitchen is huge and has plenty of cookware. The dining room is adorned with photos from the past. The smell might be a bit for a first timer but is soon forgotten once you slide into the water. You can find a nice trail to hike behind the last cabin where you can birdwatch or just sit and enjoy the silence. The creek itself is full of life deer and various little critters come by at different times of the day. And if you go during the rainy season you are treated with mini waterfalls that lul you through your window. The flora is always something to look forward to during the spring and summer months. The staff are always very nice. The visitors are always a treat. I always meet some new interesting people when I stay. No wifi but its not missed its kinda nice actually no outside intrusions make it feel all the more remote. Cabins are adorable but thin walls folks so.. yeah..lol the yurts are beautiful I've yet to stay in the larger rooms for groups but all look very well maintained. There are only three issues I have with the resort. 1 The booking can get wonky if you plan to stay longer than a day or two you might have to relocate to a new cabin or area. 2. The fact that this place isn't 4 star ..who made that decision? I'd say 5 star without the 5 star traffic.. and 3 I can't live there full time until I die of old age at 100+ years old..then just live there in the afterlife... seriously I love this place its been my only request for vacations since I was a child. To all the people who keep that place I want to say thank you when my mother passed away I stayed for a week and I can say that it was exactly the place I needed to be. Thank...
