My family still has 1 more day left at Vintage Vermilion, and we will be sad to leave. We rented the entire resort. FUN and RELAXATION were the key words. Black Bay is a remote bay closer to Crane Lake than Tower, which makes it special because there is little boat traffic or development. The resort is special in addition to the Northwoods cabins. The family often hung out in the main lodge, the retreat up in the woods or the deck next to the dock.
One night just after the 4th of July, the temperature fell to 39F even in early July. No problem. Folks fired up the wood sauna.
Finally The Landing is an easy boat ride (or drive) where we had dinner one night ... arriving early because of our seven young children.
I would be remiss if I did not call out the caretaker and his wife (Alexander and Tatiana) who took care of our every needs. The owners, The Johnsons, were also always very responsive by email and helped us enjoy our week.
I actually own a small classic Northwoods cabin well north of Grand Rapids. This gave me a good frame of comparison. However our cabin is small and could never host our extended family.
My final recommendation is if your finances allow and your group is larger, rent the entire resort. We had one extra cabin over and above the number of families. The grandkids loved making the extra cabin their own, both for sleepovers and play rooms.
Some quick notes: 1. The internet access was fine through the entire resort. 2. The pontoon boat is huge. Easily and legally we could fit our entire group of 15 on the boat which we rented for the entire week. The pontoon is also powered fast enough to pull young...
Read moreAn overlooked jewel at Vintage Vermilion is the Larch cabin. The Larch is loaded with charm beginning with its isolated location, separated from the other three cabins (Aspen, Birch, Cedar) by a short walk. The vaulted ceilings and walls finished in white pine give the Larch a cheery, bright interior. New living area windows look out upon Black Bay, the last and most northern bay on Lake Vermilion. The view from Larch is unobstructed. Larch has its own dock and bayside bench to view sunsets, sunrises or simply the loons ducking in and out of the water. Vintage Vermilion is loaded with appealing opportunities. One of the hiking paths begins near the Larch and takes one to the top of a ridge overlooking the bay. Another leads to an inviting gazebo, also overlooking the water. A lodge includes a long and wide screened-in porch with comfortable chairs. It is a nice place to sit and reflect while listening to the waves lap at the bay's shoreline. Our family loved the sauna and raced from the hot interior to a dive into the lake bay off the end of the main pier. Amenities include three kayaks and a canoe. If one wants a motor, one is attached to a fishing boat protected in a boat shed. Noteworthy are new lounge chairs for cabins and main dock deck, wooden steps leading into the Cedar cabin (vaulted ceilings), and vaulted bright interiors in both Birch and Aspen. For a remote retreat from the racket of daily life, a few days (or weeks) at Vintage Vermilion is recommended. The silence and peace...
Read moreOur family had absolutely exceptional time in this lovely exclusive cabin resort! In person it appears even better than on the pictures. Its very well maintained, very cleaned and organized. Everything needed to feel home away from home & beyond was provided there. We enjoyed our time chilling on the lake, near fire pit, in the swing, watching hummingbirds sipping on the sugar water stations, walking around the property and of course enjoying absolutely incredible sauna right on the premises! We also loved the fact that kayaking and pedal boarding equipment was provided free of charge, there were comfy lounges, chairs for sunbathing, etc. We rented a boat for a day, and it also exceeded our expectations! Kids enjoyed water skiing, and it was much easier to glide than in other places we rented similar equipment before ( Lakes of NC, AL, SC, TN). I feel it was because the boat & the accessories were more modern, and the boat's engine was more powerful. We also got lucky as our neighbors were quiet people like us. Everyone were very respectful and polite. Alex and Tatiana who work there were very attentive, hospitable and friendly! I am definitely recommending this beautiful place to all my friends and family! Can't wait to come back again...
