This dispersed camping is 100% worth it for the views!! Gorgeous sunsets, sunrises, views of thunder and lightening way into the distance, views of the rim alone are breathtaking! We had big horned sheep pass right in front of our camper on the ledge! Can’t get cooler than that! We kept kids and dogs out of the grass just to be cautious for snakes…Kiddo did have a near run in with what we believe was a prairie rattlesnake on the ROAD though 😂 thankfully it slithered off and just had some minor screaming We used this second entrance coming from Wall not Badlands Boondocking if you are using Google maps. The road in isbumpy but go slow and you are fine! We got a great flat spot and our 39 ft fifth wheel fit fine and leveled no problem. There was much hillier spots we saw. After we unhooked we drove the whole length of the rim and out the Badlands Boondocking entrance (1st entrance). There was definitely some rougher sections and I’m glad we used the second entrance! Wind did kick up at times, but it wasn’t horrible and we even parked broadside to the rim for the views. No trash or toilets, pack in and out. Minutes to the “north entrance” of Badlands Np! Great...
Read moreThis was our first time Badlands Boondocking and we kept asking ourselves….”why didn’t we do this earlier?”.
We drove from Sioux Falls after work around 5:15PM and arrived at 8:15PM (with the time change) in July……about a 4 hour drive total. We had just enough daylight left to get our tent set up. Anytime after this we would have been pushing it.
It was pretty crowded when we arrived but did find a spot on The Wall. When driving in, we drove past the first entrance on 240 and kept driving south to the second entrance (about 7-8 miles from Wall Drug exit and 1 mile from the Pinnacles Badlands National Park entrance).
It was free to camp. No electric and no campfires allowed. We saw Big Horn Sheep bedding down for the night when we got there. The sheep were grazing around 5AM.
We did a very short hike in the morning before we drove to the Black Hills (our camping destination). We hiked south going toward Pinnacles entrance. You can’t go any further as there is a barbed wire fence labeled “US Boundary”.
In conclusion, if you are heading toward the Black Hills from East River, maximize your trip and gain the scenic experience of Badlands Boondocking...
Read moreThis spot is amazing. I drove in at night in a little car. The roads were bumpy and unpaved, but taking it slow I made it without issue. You drive in and come to a T. At the "T" you can go left or right for a place to park. The area has a lot of campers (rvs, tent, and vans). I had no problem finding a spot with privacy. If you are looking to tent camp, go right all the way to the dead-end. You will see a path marked by a sign that reads "no motor vehicles". Follow that path to great spots. They aren't marked, you just choose where to put down for the night. The next morning I was met with goats playing on a ledge in that area. A ranger drove through to check on things and everything was very chill. I recommend catching your shower at Sleepy Hollow RV park for 8 bucks. The staff is friendly. Showers are warm and clean. 8 dollars and tax for use of the bathroom. There was laundry available as well, but I didn't...
