Our family of five stayed in the Trapper’s Cabin (#3) June 5-8 during a road trip through Indiana and Kentucky. I know my review will not do this place justice – it was everything we wanted and more!
First off, the service provided by the owners, Dave and Kathy, is outstanding. Kathy called the day we were arriving to see if wanted to have firewood delivered to the cabin before we arrived. Upon arrival, check in was quick and easy. Kathy was in the office/store and gave us a quick orientation and handed over the keys. She provided us with phone numbers for herself and Dave to use if we needed anything, as well as a security number.
As we were settling in, Kathy came by to make sure we had everything we needed. We asked about a basketball and fishing gear, and ten minutes later she and Dave returned with both. This example pretty much spells out the level of service we experienced during our entire stay. Both owners are visible on the property several times throughout the day and it is evident that they take pride in their guests’ comfort and satisfaction.
The campground consists of 50 or so sites for campers with electric and water hook-ups, seven cabins, and some space for tent camping. Each site has a fire pit with a grill grate attachment and picnic table. The cabins also have additional seating on the porches. There is a large pond in the center of the grounds with fishing as well as canoes and paddleboats you can rent by the hour. At the back of the campground there is a playground, basketball hoop, volleyball court, and horseshoes. There are some sheltered picnic areas near the pond. Finally, there is a walking trail that circles the property. They have free Wi-Fi, which worked well for us most of the time we were there.
Our cabin slept six. It was clean when we arrived and the windows were cracked, so it was full of fresh air. As you walked in, there was a table that seated four to one side. On the other side of the room was a small counter area with a mini fridge, coffee maker, and microwave. A large wildlife print blanket/curtain separated the beds from the front area of the cabin. There was one queen bed with a twin bunk above, one double bed, and a twin bed located in a loft area. Although the “bedroom” area was small it was completely functional. There was a small alcove beneath the stairs where you could stow your luggage. The air conditioner was in the bedroom area and was nice and cold the days that we needed it.
The loft was surprisingly roomy. I couldn’t stand straight up, but it was perfect for children. The twin is a proper bed, not just a mattress on the floor, which was nice. The kids thought the stairs were steep, but I didn’t find them to be terribly so. Hanging down the wall from the loft, and also above the front door were two beautiful deer hides that had been sculpted(?) and painted with wildlife images.
The front porch of the cabin had two Adirondack chairs with a side table between, a larger round table, and a wicker-style loveseat.
Note that these are primitive cabins in that they do not have bathrooms. For toilets and showers, you have to walk to the shower house (a two-minute walk). The bathrooms were exceptionally clean and smelled fresh every time we visited. The showers had good water pressure and nice hot water. I am picky about public restrooms and these were the cleanest I’ve ever seen.
My husband and I enjoyed the peace and relaxation. The name of the campground couldn’t be more apt; Peaceful Waters describes it perfectly.
We rented our cabin for about $100/night (I think it was actually $95 plus taxes), so it was a great value for a family on a budget-friendly road trip. I cannot emphasize what a great time we had. We can’t wait until we can make it back for a...
Read moreI spent a week here in the summer with my service dog in our camper. I actually really enjoyed myself and looked into the cabins because they looked so cool. I brought my son and his 3 friends for a end of summer camping trip to start their Junior year. It is an hour and 15 minute drive from where we live. I drove up ahead to set the cabin up because there are no bed linens or running water and my son had a football scrimmage to complete before we could come later. That is when I realized there was a sign in the cabin “no pets allowed” I immediately panicked because I posted Scarlet on the online form where is said list an pets staying when I booked, but then told myself it would be fine and to just go talk to the front desk, whom were very kind to me when I arrived and even remembered I had stayed the week there this summer. I was wrong. When I went back to the front desk the woman behind the counters demeanor changed when I asked her about my dog. She said I had made a mistake with the website and there’s no way I did it right. Through tears I explained she is a service dog and that I had her paperwork. I WAS STILL DENIED. She said I could keep her in a crate outside!!!! I left and cried myself home knowing I would have to get through the weekend without her as they do not offer refunds under any circumstances. I came back with my kids and stayed the weekend. The air conditioner barely keeps it cool. You have to go to the bathroom in an outhouse with no light, or lock on the door. There was a 2 night minimum at $100 a night!!!! Which would have ALL been fine if they hadn’t been so rude. The woman at the desk was in my opinion rude to me from that point even waving me down to tell me I needed to slow down in front of a group of people while I was going the speed limit posted. My son even asked me what is that ladies problem. My husband and I were interested in leasing a space for our camper because I enjoyed my first stay so much. The owners need to educate their employees on service dog laws, I could have taken this much further. We are FEDERALLY protected. I almost didn’t post this, but weeks later and I am still upset about it. We will not be back.
With response to my review -I did bring it to the front desk’s attention. The only accommodation I was offered was for my service dog to sleep outside in a crate. Please do not say I did not try to immediately let you know there was a problem because I did. The woman at the front desk who was alone when I came back to talk to her had very long gray hair. You should talk to her about the service dog laws and friendliness. She was aware that there was a problem with check-in and it is her responsibility to let the owners know about...
Read moreThis campground has much to offer for families, reunions, fishing, etc. The owners were very pleasant as well. They are in the process of adding more cabins. The owner let us walk through one that had just been completed. It was rustic and beautiful! The grounds around the campground were so pretty, I could see they take much pride in ownership. We stay in one of the 10 or so full hook up sites. Water pressure and sewer connection worked well. The up front sites are laid out differently than any I’ve seen but worked out just fine. They have more sites in the front area and a few in the back section that are electric only. There are very nice tent ares as well. Bathhouse was extremely clean and cared for. There is also a small camp/gift store. Camp items are somewhat limited. We visited days before the season ended so that may be the reason for limited stock. There are also 2 or 3 public covered picnic areas with water and power for group gatherings complete with fire pits. The are decorated in the red and white covered bridge theme. There are 2 reasons for only 4 stars. The 1st being the road noise for the full hookup sites. The campground is literally yards from RT 41 and can be very loud starting around 6 am to 6pm. If you like to sleep in this might be a problem for you. It was relatively quiet during the night however. The is a nice row of trees to help camouflage the noise. The 2nd being the cancellation policy. When I booked our paid in full reservation it plainly states there are NO refunds. Not sure why they have chosen this policy but it seems a bit extreme to me. I am quite familiar with keeping a one night deposit or a stepped down refund policy but not no refunds or credits for next season, period. Full hook up sites in the area are a bit difficult to come by during any season. I did ask what improvements they were planning in the coming year and I was told more cabins. (They are very nice). I asked about regrading the sites and was told the owner typically does that once the campground closes or before opening. They weren’t bad but need gravel added and grading. All in all this was a very...
