Our first visit and we'll be back. This will be a pretty exhaustive review with tips for those interested. You get your cabin assignment and the code for the lock about 30 minutes before 3pm on the day you check in.
Stayed in the Opal, room for 2.
The Lot Well kept, you get a fire pit, picnic bench and 2 wooden chairs. There's a box of firewood that you can purchase wood for $8 and the fire pit has a grill attachment.
The "Bedroom" You get a queen size bed with a firm mattress that has memory foam feel to it. We found it to be quite comfortable. The bed is made when you arrive with a comforter, 4 pillows and sheets. There's a large window to look out of and a smaller window that you can open for fresh air.
The "Kitchen" No coffee machine, but you get a water kettle. 2 burner electric stove with a vent. Fully stocked with utensils, pan, pot, knives, cups. They also provide paper towels, garbage bags and aluminum foil. Mini-fridge is your typical mini-fridge. No ice, but there's a small freezer section on top. You can't fit a gallon jug of anything, but it held quite a bit of food. Sink has instant hot water and there's palmolive and a sponge. You get a table and a chair. There's a lip of wood that the mattress sits on that can be used as a bench on the other side of the table.
The Bathroom Functioning toilet and shower. Hot water and pressure was surprisingly good. Didn't test to see how much hot water was available, but it lasted at least 5 minutes and seemed to replenish fairly quickly. Body Soap, Shampoo and conditioner are in dispensers on the shower wall. Shower walls are metal and there's industrial carpet throughout the bathroom and living area. We got a couple of decent bath towels provided.
There are a couple of power outlets that you can use to charge devices and we brought a small Keurig which was very useful. The outlets by the front door had built in USB chargers that you can use.
Surroundings - This is like any campground I've ever been to. Stalls for car and there just happens to be a "tiny house" parked on the lot. Stalls vary in proximity to each other, but again, most campgrounds in state parks are like this though there's a lot more trees between stalls which does provide fairly good privacy. The one hiking trail on the property is pretty short and pretty easy. It provides something to do, but it isn't the highlight of the grounds.
If you're using hotel ratings, this is like a well kept 2-star hotel. But if you're thinking camping, it is definitely a...
Read moreBeautiful minimalistic aesthetic. Cute little cabin in the woods in the middle of nowhere Texas. Many cabins on the property but they’re each situated such that you have plenty of privacy and can’t really see or hear your neighbors. We booked the bunk bed room and stayed in “Kay” cabin—mattresses and pillows were super comfy. The kitchenette had just about everything you would need: camping style mugs, plates, & bowls, a tea kettle, a couple of pots, wine bottle opener, 2 lighters, scissors, a few books, a deck of cards, a camp themed mad libs, paper towels, garbage bags, stovetop, refrigerator, 2 rechargeable lanterns, a small dining table with 4 chairs, a separate bathroom with toilet and standing shower and plenty of towels. We paid the extra fee to have our dog and it was heaven for him. Outside there’s a fire pit with a grill, 4 Adirondack chairs, and a cable cord to connect your pup if you’d like. They had a sweet little dog welcome kit ready for us with water bowl, towel, dog treats, and poop bags.
It was chilly during our stay (45-50 degrees) and the heater unit inside was nice and toasty—kept us plenty warm.
I greatly appreciated that there was very weak Wi-Fi signal to force us to disconnect from the hustle and bustle. Closest place is Bucee’s 20+ minutes away and no microwave in the building so come prepared with food and beverages too.
You won’t know which cabin your staying in until about an hour before checkin but they’ll send a helpful map of the property earlier that morning.
A nature trail is close by but we didn’t get a chance to test it out. Next time for sure.
Pro-tip: Take your own s’mores supplies, firewood, and fire starter. All of the above are available but you will be charged for them: $5/s’more kit, $8/bundle of firewood, $2/starter kit. Otherwise this place was exactly the quiet tranquil nature getaway that we needed to celebrate a dear...
Read moreWe just finished our stay at the Getaway Houston. It was very relaxing, and cabin was comfortable with all your needed amenities. Enjoyed our walk on the trail. Would I go back maybe. We stayed in the Ann. It was peaceful and quiet, just what we needed. Now our cabin still had the previous guest trash in it, and we were not provided any washcloths. I did let them know and they were willing to come get the trash out. We brought wash cloths, so it was not a big deal. It did have me question the cleanliness of our cabin, but I usually wipe down and rewash items anyway. The AC was an issue the whole stay glad there was a fan. So, during our first night we were awoken due to being hot and notice the AC barely blowing on one side. We followed the directions and restarted the AC. By morning the same issue so we did it again and went for a walk on the trail to give it time to cool down. When we came back the cabin was still hot, we informed them, and they sent someone out to check it out. We followed directions on waiting an hour and set unit on Auto and 72. AC was blowing cold again, perfect timing because we started dinner shortly after. We did get a grill due to a burn ban in the area and using the firepit was against the rules. This is something I think should have been disclosed prior because it was something we anticipated using. Later on, during the night my companion had some back issues but notice it was hot again. Sure, enough the AC was out. I just turned on the fan and went on assisting him with his back pain. I notified the getaway house in the morning and hopefully they fix it prior to the next guest. Texas is still hot, but our saving grace was cooler weather during the late night and early morning hours, and we opened the window. All in all, I might stay again because I love the concept and nature. Even though this visit was not as relaxing as...
