This hidden gem in the Flint Hills of Kansas was such a delight, and truly unique. The hotel is over 100 years old and has been lovingly restored by a phenomenal group of persistent volunteers in Waterville. In fact, the hotel is run by those volunteers, who check you in, answer questions about the property and serve your breakfast.||||The rooms are spotless. The updating has been kept with the style of the period, and is tasteful rather than being a cartoonish reproduction. As a result the rooms are homey, the bathrooms are stylish and well appointed, the furniture details are authentic. We were in room 10 on the top floor in the northwest corner. The room was bright and large.||||The breakfast wasn't lavish but served by caring volunteers. It gave us a chance to learn more about the area, the hotel project and chat with other guests.||||Waterville is a sleepy community and without a restaurant option. Our hostess made a wonderful recommendation for us, Nelson's Landing in Leonardville. It was about 20 miles down the road, but was a great experience and surprise for us. We needed to get a take out meal for 5, and in spite of being very busy with graduation parties, they accommodated us with a fantastic fried chicken dinner which we topped off with home made pie slices. If you are a football fan, a Packer fan, or a fan of small town, underdog heroes you'll appreciate this sports bar owned by Jordy Nelson's family.||||The attractions are limited in Waterville, but it could be a nice jumping off point for anyone wanting to explore the history of the area. It's a great value for your money, and if you are looking for something past the cookie cutter B&B we think this is for you.||||We would suggest that you have a plan for eating lunch or dinner because Waterville doesn't have any restaurants, and it's a bit out of the way, but that didn't dampen our enthusiasm or lessen our experience at all, it just added to the quirkiness.||||We were charmed and can't say enough about how much we enjoyed our...
Read moreWe found this place while searching for historic hotels on our drive from Colorado back to Missouri. It's a few miles out of the way, but once I found this place online and read of it's history I knew we had to stay there, and we were not disappointed! They have so many different types of rooms, and we opted for the room with the King bed and jacuzzi tub. It was fantastic! the town is very small (which we love) and we got there right before dark, but we enjoyed walking around the block and checking out the sleepy little town. There is nothing/nowhere to eat at all unless you want to chance that the St Clair gas station still has chicken left, so make sure you come with food or eat before you get there. But the hotel! Oh the hotel, we loved this experience. The history of this hotel and the story of how this group of people brought this place back to life and continue to run it strictly with volunteers is amazing and inspiring. If you like history and nostalgia then you will love...
Read moreThis destination hotel is a testament to community commitment to preserving our Kansas history. Loaded with charm and restored with impressive attention to details, it was perfect for a romantic Valentine's getaway. Featuring ten bedroom suites, a large ballroom, and basement great room with seating for 50, it would be a wonderful location for a retreat or reunion. Located across from the Opera house, it begs a follow up visit to attend a show. We were hoping for a ghost or two, but alas, there were none! The place was immaculate, had fair wireless signal, and basic cable tv. We were left instructions on where to locate keys for self check-in, as it is not staffed. For meals, visit Maryville or Linn, or deli chicken from the local service station. There are no restaurants, per se, in the town itself, but the town does boast a vehicle charging station. We will definitely keep the town festivals on our radar as another...
