We reserved a room at Grandview Lodge in Waynesville because it was halfway between 2 sites we were going to see: Biltmore House and rafting on the Nantahala. And because it got great reviews and was at a very good price. Such a good price, in fact, that I was a little skeptical.
But it lived up to the reviews. The lodge is like the motels you used to see in rural areas in the 50’s and 60’s, with side by side rooms, all on one story. It’s pretty far off the beaten path, so that our GPS stopped working and we had to ask a neighbor for directions, so print out directions before you go. We weren’t even able to call to ask directions because phone reception was spotty as we neared the lodge. It’s in a residential neighborhood but there is a farm nearby with cows; don’t worry, though—there’s no smell.
It has a rustic feel with touches of sophistication, such as the awesome breakfast, which I would call country gourmet. The first morning we had a cheese omelet and perfectly cooked bacon with homemade biscuits that you could smother with a cream/butter/bacon sauce, as well as tasty homemade grits and grilled shitake mushrooms grown on the site. Homemade apple juice came from the huge apple trees on the property. I’m so used to how you buy it in the store with that golden color that I didn’t even recognize it as apple juice in its natural state. The second day, another tasty omelet, but this time with 2 different types of sausage plus bean sprouts. The music was eclectic: while we were there I heard classical, John Mayer, and tango music. One caveat: they serve breakfast from 8:30 to 9:30 so if you have reservations somewhere you need to keep that in mind.
There a basic fire pit on the property but we didn’t try it. The rocking chairs outside the rooms were a nice touch.
Jeffery is the male in the couple that own the property and was able to give personalized recommendations of great places to eat in the area, including several “farm-to-table” restaurants.
The rooms were comfortably air-conditioned, included soap and shampoo and a nice shower with easy-to-regulate temperature. The walls and ceiling were nostalgic knotty pine. The beds were softer than we normally like, but I slept like a baby. There’s a TV in each room, but we never watched it so I can’t tell you anything about that. It was meticulously clean . One small negative is that the wifi was a little spotty in the rooms.
I stayed at Balsam Inn a little ways down the road several years before. It was much bigger with a great front porch but had no a/c anywhere and no wifi in the rooms.
All in all, Grandview is an excellent value. If you prefer a unique experience to generic motels, I encourage you to try the...
Read moreAwesome! Grandview Lodge exceeded my expectations in every category. I had been doing a LOT of International travel for business and was looking for a place to spend a few relaxing days with my fiancee. I wanted to find a place where there was plenty of things to do and see, but we could also just relax and enjoy a comfortable place, if that's what we wanted and needed. Jeffrey and Breanna were simply perfect hosts! I was coming up from Panama City, Florida and Julie was driving down from Virginia. I talked to Breanna, since I was going to be there a little bit early and she said, "No problem. I'll make sure your room is ready for you!"
Julie arrived a couple hours later and we stayed in the Gustave-Julia room, on the 2nd floor in the main house. The room was ideal. It was very clean and comfortable. The bedding was quite nice and comfortable with plenty of pillows and towels, an electric fireplace, Wi-Fi, etc... The house was built in the 1890's and Jeffrey was able to tell the whole story of the original build and the add-ons, renovations and uses that have taken place through the years. In fact, speaking of Jeffrey, I found it ideal that he wasn't pushing any stories, tales or suggestions on you, but was absolutely a wealth of knowledge when asked. One of the guests had asked about the house and his response showed that being an innkeeper is not just a job, it's a true passion. He simply asked what kinds of things we wanted to do and how much time did we wanted to spend on each thing. He was able to plan little outings for us that included incredible sightseeing on The Blue Ridge Parkway and some shopping at great little antique stores and curio shops.
One other criterion for me was that a B&B should have a fantastic breakfast to start your day, since that's right there in the name. Well, the Grandview Lodge certainly didn't disappoint us there. Jeffrey put on an incredible breakfast all 3 mornings for us and it included a few classics every day, such as great scrambled eggs, bacon, grits, red-eye gravy, muffins, coffee and orange juice, but he also made special things each morning, such as the quiche we had the last day there. I can't fail to mention the freshly made apple juice that he made each morning. When in season, he uses apples from their own trees and he grinds the apples himself. I don't think I'll ever be able to enjoy store bought apple juice again. Seriously, I WILL be back to the Grandview...
Read moreGreat recommendation! Best starting point for the Great Smokie Mountains. We felt very much at home.
The location is +++ The lodge is very quiet in a spacious, peaceful residential neighborhood in Hazelwood. It is a 3-minute drive to the center of Hazelwood and a few minutes more to Waynesville. There are a few good restaurants, gas station, supermarkets and nice stores. Lovely rural towns with nice people :).
The lodge is an ideal starting point for excursions: Great Smokie Mountains, Asheville, Lake Junaluska, Blue Ridge Parkway, Max Patch, etc. GREAT.
The lodge is +++ The room is large enough (we stayed in No.3), good large double bed, a practical small closet room, fridge, TV, fast internet, small desk, bathroom suitable (but not for the obese as a little cramped) and two very comfortable rocking chairs on the porch. We liked the rustic look - all in wood - and found it very cozy.
The breakfast was freshly prepared and was excellent! Eggs and bacon of your choice, mushrooms, juices, etc., very good :). After dinner (Bogarts Restaurant in Waynesville - great, by the way) we took the leftovers from the large portions with us and heated them up in the microwave in the lodge kitchen the next evening and were then able to continue eating in the dining room.
The living and fireplace room is very cozy and invites you to linger. There is plenty of reading material and cool music plays in the background. Of course, we also got into very nice conversations with the guests staying there. You just sit together in a big fireplace room. :):). You have to bring your own drinks, there are no service people around. It's just like at home ;).
But the best thing about our 4-day stay was the very nice conversations with Jeffrey, the owner of the lodge. We chatted about God and the world, felt very welcome and included and Jeffrey also gave us excellent tips on things to do in the area.
Thank you Jeffrey, we had a wonderful time!
fyi: We, a couple in our 50s from Germany, had a wonderful 4-day stay in June 2025 at the Grandview Lodge with the best weather and feel-good...
