This review is directed towards the campground host, not the space itself. Stunning space to visit overall!! Highly recommend during the golden hour sunsets!!
Currently Lake McDonald is experiencing construction along the main roads to replace plumbing lines for the campground parks. Due to this project, all other lake sites are closed due to the ongoing project.
We paid for a photography tour with an evening sunset to capture. After arriving, getting equipment set up, and beginning our shoots, we were met by an unexpected park host. She explained we had no choice but to leave as the gates were closing and she would not allow exceptions. After explaining we would be leaving shortly, and no other locations were open because of the construction, we were met with an even more unwelcome experience. She reluctantly gave us ten minutes. After getting some photos (we left early due to the experience) and packing up, she followed us from the site to our vehicle hounding that we had overstayed our welcome and accusing us of littering.
We thanked her for allowing us a few moments for photos and she explained we were not welcome for it and we needed to leave.
To be so rude to visitors, who were clearly there for a specific purpose and not attempting to undermine authority. And to disregard a person’s way of livelihood to earn money during a situation that is out of their control (park construction) was shocking.
I’m unsure of Ms. Joan’s situation or why she felt the need to go out of her way to be so rude, but I hope she’ll see this and know that there are alternative solutions to these issues. And I would hope she would be more conscious of how she treats others. This national park is a once in a lifetime experience for most. I hope she finds peace and is able to enjoy her time as a campground host. Also, I hope she is willing to share its beauty with visitors who...
Read morePlease Note: This is more of a review of the campsite host. The actual campsite was great. The beach area was gorgeous.
It all started just before sunset. We were spending time in the park, which is absolutely stunning, when we made our way to this campsite. Eager to take photographs of the impending setting sun, we made our way to the beach. After setting up tripods and getting all of our settings just right, we began taking crisp photos of the amazing views. We were quickly greeted, all but pleasantly, by a frail Park Volunteer. She advised us that we would not be allowed to take our all-desired photos of the beautiful landscape. We pleaded with her and reluctantly stated, "ten minutes." The sunset was approaching and entered golden hour. As we were frantically getting all the shots we could, she returned. "You've overstayed your welcome," she stated. We thanked her profusely for allowing us minutes to attempt to capture such a stunning sight. She responded with "is this yours?" as she picked up a piece of plastic many yards away from us, obviously left behind by a person who has no self-respect, respect for others or the earth. As I responded to her question "no," She turned and walked away. The bitterness in this woman's voice, the sheer unpleasantness and the lack of decent people skills caused me to write this review. It left me wondering how many others have been negatively impacted by interactions with this woman. We left the beach without any photos of the actual sunset.
A message to Joan: I truly do not understand how you can be in such an awe-inspiring place and have such a lack of joy. I hope you find your peace and enjoy the time you have left on this earth. I plead with you not to steal someone else's pleasant...
Read moreThis campground is wonderful! We stayed for 3 nights and had the time of our lives. Getting a campsite here is HARD! It’s a very small campground and it’s beautiful so demand is really high. It’s a bummer that some people don’t show up to their reservations and don’t cancel them so the campsites end up empty. We saw a few like that during our stay. The campground is really shaded and if you’re lucky enough you can get a campsite right next to the lake. We stayed in campsite 15 and had our own little private walkway to the lake. The campsites are really close to each other and not a whole lot of privacy between neighbors. Again, it’s because the campground is very small. The campground has potable water, shared food storage containers, dump station, and flush toilets. No showers, or hand soap in the restrooms. We had easy access to the lake and went there every day. The sunset is beautiful and the lake is stunning. It’s also very private bc that portion of the lake is only used by people camping for the most part. There is a day picnic portion in the other side of the campground but it has access to a different part of the lake. We saw deer in the campground. Keep in mind that bears are also around. We didn’t see any but bear spray is recommended. We took the shuttle to hitch stops right across Sprague to Avalanche trail, lake McDonald lodge/village, and Logan pass. It was SO worth it and free! You also don’t need a car reservation for going-to-the-sun road if you stay here. We went to shop at lake McDonald lodge and their coffee was really good! I would absolutely love to...
