Magnuson Hotel West Liberty — Hotel in West Liberty

The location is great, because they are the only hotel in West Liberty. The staff was friendly and check in was easy. Room was clean, the hotel itself was clean. The bed, bedding and towels were maintained. I slept well. I travel for work so being able to rest goes a long way.

The hotel is dated. Wallpaper is coming loose from the walls and the carpet has seen better days. However, in spite of that it does not stink, does not smell like smoke and does not smell like curry. No cigarette burns on anything. Chair was gross, but that's a common theme at most if not all hotels.

Anywhere else this hotel would be cheaper. But, anywhere else it would also be in a far worse shape. There were no other hotels I could find in West Liberty and I was not about to drive an hour only to drive an hour back in the morning for work. Especially when the next closest was Morehead. I stayed here for three nights on my motorcycle tour of eastern Kentucky. It's a small town, so it is a friendly atmosphere. The room and the facility had all of the bases covered. The bed was comfortable, everything worked, and whoever manages it knows how to run a hotel. It is an older building and some of the finishes are a little tired, but that's why you're not paying double at a branded chain hotel with newer construction. A McDonalds and a grocery store are right next door, but the hotel is on a hill, so walking to them is doable, but a bit of a schlep. The room had a mildew smell. It looked like there were spots off mold around the top of the walls, and the wallpaper border at the top was coming loose. We were awakened by banging from upstairs. It sounded like they may have been remodeling or something. I was told that it had recently been sold. So maybe they're trying to make some improvements. The staff was very friendly and the location was pretty good. It would've been nice to have a do not disturb sign to hang on the door, so housekeeping wouldn't disturb you. I mean it served it purpose since I was only sleeping there and I didn't have to spend a lot of time...
