We stayed 4 nights at Lonesomehurst and then moved to another campground because Lonesomehurst was closing for the season. I later found out we could have stayed there but without electricity. I wish I had known this earlier. The season end dates shown on rec.gov and the federal park websites weren’t the same and when I called the federal park website, the person I spoke with had no clue about the season dates. I stayed at Lonesomehurst for 9 nights two years prior and the camping season ended a little later that year. Denny Creek Rd into Lonesomehurst is a decent paved 45 mph road. When close to the campground the road transitions to a terrible gravel road with abundant potholes and washboard throughout. When I was there two years ago it had the washboard but not so many potholes. The mostly dirt road inside the campground had lots of potholes too. Lonesomehurst only has 5 electric sites. I believe online it lists 30 amp but ours had both 30 and 50 amp outlets. The electric pedestal was in good condition. There are water spigots throughout the campground but only the one closest to site 1 has a threaded spigot to attach a water hose. Filling your water tank here pretty much blocks the campground road but there aren’t any options. I would say this is not a big rig friendly campground. We have a 36’ 5th wheel that is 13’ 6” tall. I chose site 5 because it was not difficult to back into but you can see where several people have brushed against a nearby tree maneuvering around their site. The road is lined with wooden posts that limit maneuvering room, are tall enough to damage your truck and trailer but not tall enough to be easily seen. The one-way loop around the campground has many low hanging branches that will drag on the top and sides of a tall camper and they are thick enough to cause damage so beware. Site 5 was long enough to accommodate our 36’ trailer and unhooked truck with no extra room. Hebgen Lake is somewhat scenic and this campground is very popular with fishermen. I read several reviews complaining about mosquitoes there but when we stayed in mid September they were not a problem. Our site had a tall fire ring picnic table and bear locker. There is no concrete or gravel parking pad everything is grass or dirt. Our site was mostly level and I believe the others are as well. Both times I stayed there the camp hosts were great and the campground was quiet. Firewood is available from the camp hosts, $6 per bundle. One can shop for groceries in West Yellowstone but they are expensive as we learned the first time here. We stocked up at the Walmart in Billings before arriving this time. Our AT&T cell phones had OK reception there. I would stay at Lonesomehurst again if I had a smaller/shorter trailer but not with a long or...
Read moreThis is not the place for campers who are irritated by large RV's running generators, but it's a great spot on Hebgen Lake with its own boat launch and dock. We noticed some spaces have electric hookup, too. We were very lucky to reserve a tent campsite online last week, a spacious, grassy site with nice trees. Although not right on the lake, it was in full view and an easy walk to launch our kayaks. The bathrooms were well maintained by a camp host, who was very personable. The town of West Yellowstone was barely a 10 min drive away and has stores and restaurants. The RV campers who were running generators were considerate about being quiet after 10pm. Some RV campers left poor dogs unattended inside the campers that barked annoyingly for hours, but that's just how it goes with some dog owners. All in all, a nice spot and a fun time. The lake is absolutely gorgeous and the bird and animal watching...
Read moreOh my goodness…we so enjoyed our stay here as we explored Yellowstone NP. It’s a bit rugged, and only about 10-15 mins from the town of West Yellowstone and west Yellowstone NP entrance. To us it was the perfect location. We only had electric. There are no water or sewer at the sites, but there are several water spickets and restrooms throughout the park. The lake views are beautiful and there are lake view sites. The only thing is they don’t have electric. If that’s a concern try getting a site across the street so you can have electric and a partial view. The Camp Hostess was kind and helpful. The dump we used was in West Yellowstone at Grizzly RV Park with a $20 fee. If you don’t mind not having all the amenities you will enjoy your stay. Visiting Yellowstone and Teton NPs was so wonderful and definitely a blessing to say the least; your visit here will have unforgettable...
