White Birch Campground — Hotel in Whately

Sigh... I gave this place a shot and hoped for the best after reading a bunch of widely varying reviews. I saw it all, from the one star fire pit filled with trash from the previous campers to the five star laidback atmosphere that the place has. First off, if price is a determining factor for your camping experience then go somewhere else. This place is almost twice as expensive as other places where you can book online. It cost me $100 to camp for two nights and get 20 pieces of wood. I was also confused about their pricing since they advertise "weekends $40" but that doesn't mean you get the weekend for $40, it is $40 a night on weekends (and even more on holiday weekends). When I said that the way they phrased their pricing was a little misleading the owner stated to compare their camp to KOA and other national campgrounds, which they do not hold a candle to by the way. They still run this place on a pad of paper and that caused some more confusion on their end because of how the forms were laid out (they switched between number of days and number of nights on the forms). She then tried to offer me sites with electric and water hook ups since I complained about the price but I was tenting so the electric hookup was not something I could make use of, the water access at the site was definitely a plus though. So then we get the wood. She leads me into this dilapidated barn with pieces of broken furniture strewn about and for a second I thought this was going to be my fire wood. As it turned out there was a meager pile of split wood and the "bundles" are actually just sold as 10 pieces of wood picked by hand from the precariously balanced stack which almost fell down on me. In the end the wood was at a good price, it was just shocking to hear $10 a bundle where I have paid $6 a bundle at other places. The overall camping experience was pretty decent. The place wasn't super quiet or that far away from the road but the surrounding campers were quiet for the most part and there wasn't many campers there to begin with. Their pool was nice, a bit small so more than like 5 people would be too crowded for me but me and my friend were able to cool off for a bit with no issue. Their bathrooms were clean, a bit worn but definitely ok. They also have a single shower but I did not make use of it. I did have a good time there and there were no super big issues but the owners need to get up to date with a better booking system and the place could use some restoration to justify the higher price per night. All of the picnic tables were in need of replacement, raised wooden platforms were too weak to support my body weight, my fire pit was filled with trash. If I go back I know what I will be getting in to and I will expect these sorts of things but for the price and inconvenience of booking I think I will be sticking to the campsites that use Reserve America. Now that I've left and don't fear for my safety I can safely post that this is THE WORST campground I have EVER stayed at and they charge 3xs more than any other place I've stayed at and I camp at least 4 to 5 times in the summer for week long stays! To start we should have known by the fact that we were in town for a huge festival at the Franklin County Fairgrounds. Thousands were there and a ton of them were camping but this place was empty aside from the few people living there. We were literally the only people staying there. They put us on the very 1st site right near the office which was a building falling down with a green pool next to it. There was trash everywhere including on our site. Just disgusting! Then I went into the extremely dirty bathroom and one toilet had feces in it and the sink was covered in dirt and dead bugs. The trash was overflowing and obviously hadn't been empty in who knows how long. They said we could have a fire but that would cost extra, thankfully we were at the fairgrounds all day until late at night so we didn't bother having one. The site was so full of trash and rotting food that when we returned to the site the first night we came back to find a hole torn in our popup screen and animal feces all over the place inside. Animals were obviously familiar with the fact that food was present, we took all food with us in the car mind you, so permanent damage to our camper caused by negligent maintenence to the campground sites. We went to throw our trash in the dumpster and the smell was just putrid since it was also overflowing and didn't look to be emptied for at least a month. The only plus there was electric and water on the site but I have stayed places that have that for $17 a night and are immaculately maintained Please avoid this place at ALL COST!! This is a great place to stay if you enjoy paying way too much for a ring of dirt, love horrible management and even worse ownership, as well as unkempt areas with dilapidated buildings and no amenities, oh and dont like humans. Although, the black bear that likes to visit me is a nice sight. Apparently Yogi thinks I'm Boo-Boo. The pool is a joke, if they bother opening it. Nothing is done except when it time to pay and the owner will cone around to collect like King John's unjust tax wench.will not be back and do not recommend. 10-18-22 Update. Because the owner writes things on scrap paper and no actual finger system, she tried kicking us our saying g we owe 2 months payments. Called me low class and shush me while inside my camper. It wasn't until I showed her the copies of the checks from the months she stated she never got, cashed by her only days after getting them that she backed off. She's trying to collect an outrageous electric bull from us with no actual documenting showing g me why it's so much. My 5 bedroom 2 story house with central air didn't pay this much in electric. She just hired a new manager but he agreed with her when he stood right next to her when we paid. I have no hope this place will get better. They should shut down forever and let people who actually care take over. I can't belive all the owner is so sweet comments. She is not. She is ignorant, rude, and doesn't listen to anything you say. I would say good luck but it be wasted here. Go somewhere else people. This place is a pot stain, and that's being nice. If we weren't absolutely stuck here, we'd have left...
