Be aware this hotel is NOT handicap friendly. Here is our recent experience at the Wedmor Hotel , because I have some trouble walking we calledto book a handicapped room we chose a room (the Ardennes) we asked if it was handicap accessible and were assured it was. We checked in went to the room brought all our bags in started hanging up clothes needed to use bathroom went in to find a bathtub with no grab bars and a low toilet went back to the front desk and told them we had requested handicap room which we were then told none were available the room was paid for in advance and we were told the other room was down for maintenance so we didn’t have to go through the hassel of getting refunds (we were there with another couple) we said we would be okay with a walk in shower. The clerk found us one in the Cornwall room we entered the room to fine it dirty looking pillows on the bed were lazily thrown there and they were dingy white with little form. The shower stall was very narrow the hall in front barely wide enough to completely open the door. We then requested a shower chair but all they had was a shower bench which did not fit into the stall . We also noticed the room we had booked was much nicer. We mentioned the inconvenience of having to change rooms and not have the safety of a handicap room yet no discount or partial refund was offered. We didn’t find out till later that there are only 2 handicapped rooms both of which have tubs not walk in showers. When we phoned we were assured they had walk in showers. The area around hotel, though beautiful, is not handicap friendly the parking area is filled with pea gravel making wheelchair cane or walker use difficult and could be dangerous the parking area was also quite a distance from front door. To visit the winery or Café area you have to traverse uneven ground and avoid potholes. I wasn’t impressed with security after 930 pm the front door is locked and there is no staff on the premises. You have a number to call if there is an emergency .To enter building after hours you must go around the back of the building and input a code to enter no idea how often code is changed. The room doors still use keys which are not kept in secure area and the doors themselves don’t always close property once inside the room there is no secondary swing latch or chain latch on the door. Anyone with a key can come right in. There are very few amenities no mini fridge microwave no drink or snack machines. To get ice you let the front desk know and they bring you a small bucket. Which is enough to fill 2 rock glasses. The main restaurant was only open on weekends. The café is open limited hours 12pm to 3pm . The couple we were with also complained to us about the room being dirty and for the amount paid it should have been much nicer. It was mentioned to the front desk that we were unhappy about our stay and all was said to us was an insincere sorry it was a very disappointing stay and none of us plan to return. Posting this for mainly the handicapped people the rooms are sloppily modified for you so take my advice stay...
Read moreWe stayed here in January 2015 and were quite impressed. I travel to Europe often and make it a point to stay in "ancient" places so the thought of an "European-style" American version of that seemed a little ersatz to me but we decided to give it a whirl anyway. We are glad we did! It is now our favorite place to stay in the Williamsburg area. Admittedly, it is a little difficult to pull off the feel of genuine European elegance via decor but attention to detail is how Wedmore place has accomplished it. The setting itself is a big part of what make this place elegant and comfortable, too. It is set apart from the bustling streets of Williamsburg, on a lake near the James River on a spacious piece of property with its own vineyard, making for a retreat setting. But what really makes this place soar way above the competition is the staff and management. Our host was a very thoughtful and lovely Australian (or possibly South African) woman--perhaps I am misremembering after all this time, but I think her name was Margot? The first room we had was a bit small and not at all what I was expecting--only room enough for the bed and kind of stuffy--on top of that the sink didn't drain. So after the first night we spoke to the manager and she quickly offered us an upgrade--and what an upgrade it was!!! It turned out to be the Venetian Suite--the largest room in the place! Not only were we quite stupefied by her largess but it also solved a bit of a challenge facing us. We had wanted to have my elderly father who lives near Petersburg join us. When the manager put us up in the large suite, we asked her if it could accommodate a third person and she assured us it did. So we were able to bring him over for a nice get away, too! He loved the restaurant and so did we. Everything in the restaurant is done with great attention to detail and flawless preparation. The staff are knowledgeable about both food and wine. The blessings continue...we made inquiries about getting a massage and the manager told us she could arrange a couple massage with 2 massage therapists at once so we set aside a day for this. We had a most memorable and amazing massage by these two ladies--one was a German lady and another a Fillapina lady--they were from a nearby spa. They were so completely thorough and skilled that we have often found ourselves wishing we lived closer to Williamsburg so to be able to have their massages more often--we would be a lot healthier for it to be sure. They took plenty of time and even gave us some good recommendations for healthy options and tips which we've incorporated. I am hoping we will be able to return here again this...
Read moreWe tried to have a romantic getaway and thought this hotel would be cute and comfortable. Our experience here almost ruined our whole trip. They gave us a room we didn’t book and added $150+ of extra charges to our bill for services we never ordered or received. Overall we paid roughly $1100 for 3 nights of a suite we didn’t get to stay in, issues at check in and check out, and mystery charges. I travel several weeks a year and have never had issues like this.
First, the good: Breakfast staff was very nice and the continental breakfast was good. It was on par with other boutique hotels I’ve stayed at. The grounds were quiet and pretty. We had a nice time walking the vineyard. Our picnic lunch from the restaurant was very good. Great location for Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown.
The bad: We rented a suite and it was not available. Things happen, but they handled it really poorly. They knew about the issue a week before our stay and said they called, but never left a message or email. Even the restaurant sent us an email about what we’d prefer in our picnic basket, so they had the info. They also didn’t mention it when we called the day before, or when we checked in. We got to the room and I thought we had booked the wrong one. The room they changed us to did not have a large tub like the one we picked out, which was the only reason we booked a suite for twice the price. The new room also had a staircase inside the room which was a problem for us. It took nearly 2 hours to sort out with the front desk. The check in person tried to charge us several hundred more dollars for asking to change to a smaller room, in addition to the suite price we already paid. This could have been prevented by just calling us about a different option instead of surprising us and trying to charge us even more for their issue. The room we did get was not very clean. There was a dead wasp in an obvious place. The shower was either burning hot or cold despite a lot of adjusting and waiting. On check out, they added over $150 of charges for things we never did. A day pass, a cheese board, something from the restaurant, etc. The check out person said she didn’t know and would talk to the manager, but it wasn’t possible for them to resolve it that day. I asked for the managers contact info so we could sort it out, and she wouldn’t share it. Of course, they never resolved the issue and left the charges on our...
