Such a great time! My husband and I were looking for a quick getaway for our anniversary where we could spend time in nature and get out of the city. The requirements for our quick trip were tall trees, trails, and kayaking, and Stay in Babia in the Sam Houston National Forest was just perfect for all of those. We were fortunate enough to spend some time with the owner Alberto when we arrived and really enjoyed hearing the vision behind this place. He said he is working on getting TV's per feedback from others, but my husband and I really enjoyed not having the option to just flip the TV on while we were there. We spent so much time outside exploring the grounds and as much of the trails as we could with all the recent flooding.
The cabin itself is just gorgeous! Perfectly clean, kitchen stocked with essentials, some wood and coals for the firepit, bug spray, and THE most comfortable bed my husband and I have slept in out of town in a long time. Waking up in that bed in the trees is worth a return trip itself! We had no issues with temperature control even with 95+ temps outside. The WiFi worked great inside when we needed to use it. We also really appreciated the jenga and uno that were provided, we got hours of use out of those before bed. The “common area” is perfect for get togethers, meeting people in the other cabins, etc. It just needs a fire pit in there to pull it together!
There are so many nice looking hiking trails in the area but were unfortunately closed at the time due to storms. For boating, kayaking, and fishing, Lake Conroe is only an easy 30 minute drive from the cabins and is absolutely beautiful. The area is definitely worth a drive through.
The only issues we had were that we never got the "important instructions" email that had information like what to bring, how to get there etc. The water there is non-potable so make sure to come prepared for that. Luckily there was enough bottled water provided to get us through the first evening and next morning. The website also says that check-out is at noon which is what we planned for, but the instructions we received the morning of our departure said 11am. That caused for a mad dash to pack up and leave as soon as our alarm went off.
This was a great place to stay, thank you Alberto for creating a great experience for us. We can't wait to come...
Read moreWe checked out early (booked three nights but stayed only two). The issues were too numerous to stay:
dogs wandering property (one barking and staring at us while we sit inside the house) dog coming onto deck (staff solution: give us a stick to swing at dog - then he throws a stick at the dog - claims dog is from ranch nearby) hot tub took forever to heat so couldn't use first night and too smelly to use second day/night loud blowers someone hacking loogies all morning loud music from junk property next to our cabin and from other guests not romantic because it's not private (there is a trail from the junk property leading to the common area that cuts through where we are staying - a man and his dog stopped to pick up limbs Wed. morning) lake access is disgusting (old handicapped toilet and cans/trash everywhere). warped/damaged kitchen floor major scratches in floor in living area filthy windows/skylights slow drain in shower (tub fills while taking shower) broken toilet tissue holder sprayed by handheld wand when turning on shower because it was aimed toward bathroom door filthy floors (used Swiffer first night - practically black after cleaning) nowhere near any other walking/hiking trails (min 10-minute drive away)
We sent this to the email they provided but they claim it was never received. I resent the email but have not received any acknowledgement. We also learned that, after Alberto did not respond to our texts 11/05, he was on a flight from Spain to Mexico. He told us there was another number to use, but it was only listed on a set of instructions on the wall. I was using the instructions in the emails we received.
Alberto mentioned a 50% refund during a phone call, which would go a long way to make things better, but it's been two days since then with no word/activity. UPDATE A refund transaction was initiated 11/07.
It was anything but relaxing and romantic. This was for our...
Read moreThe house was clean, everything worked and is pretty new and well kept. There were games in the closet. They even had a fresh sponge in the sink for washing dishes- a nice touch. There is a two burner stove, refrigerator freezer and microwave with dishes, some cookware and a Keurig coffee maker with a screen/filter to make your own brand if you like. The Wi-Fi worked well as did the TV and streaming services. (Netflix, Peacock, Disney-- there may have been more we just didn't search) We liked it so much we stayed an extra day. There are other cabins close by but we didn't see very many people (what we wanted). It felt secluded and was quiet. The firewood and charcoal were in the boxes at the driveway for cooking at the firepit. We hiked via the fire roads to the lake (about 5 miles) but there is a much shorter trail to the lake (a little over a 1/4 mile) but we didn't go that way. We wanted to walk. There is a nice community area if you had multiple households staying in the other cabins. There are forestry bike trails around very close to the house, although we didn't get to ride them, it looked like there were actual elevation changes. After reading one of the earlier reviews we brought an extra fan as the loft can be warm although there was one upstairs. We were quite comfortable. All in all we very much enjoyed our stay and look forward to...
