We wanted to love this place. I booked a month or so in advance. I talked to a woman on the phone for quite awhile about all the different sites and features before choosing one. It was $40 a night. A little steep but she said it was one of the best sites with a view and we needed to car camp because we had our 1 year old coming.

Well, we got there and learned our site was not car camping at all. It was one of 4 sites you can park at. This info is not on the website nor did the woman tell me once the entire hour we were on the phone. They told us there was only one other site they can move us to available that you can park at. We checked it out and we’re going to agree even though it wasn’t as nice as at all. We went to the office and NOW she volunteers the info that it’s only available for one night and we are staying two. She almost didn’t tell us. We had no choice but to use the site we couldn’t bring the car to. It was pouring rain, we tried our best but it just wasn’t possible. We packed our stuff and drove home.

The office was closed as we were leaving so I called and left a message requesting somebody call me first thing Saturday to discuss what happened.

I get a phone call from the office woman this morning. I explained the situation and the second she realized I was calling with feedback/requests she didn’t want to deal with. I explain the situation as nicely as I could and asked what we can do about it. She started rudely telling me I’m not getting my deposit back if that’s what I’m asking for. I said okay well what about a credit to come back to another site? I was trying to compromise however I could because I understand it’s a no deposit back policy and we honestly did want to stay, but I also understand we were somewhat duped.

She told me she can credit me to come back today, but yesterday she told me (in person) they didn’t have any sites available today. I said we can’t do that we literally just drove home and before I can say anything else she snapped that their season is over. I said that’s fine we don’t mind to wait til next year. She said she can’t move it to next year. I asked why and she basically yelled at me that she just didn’t want to. I said okay well then we will have to discuss a refund then. She said I can’t have the deposit back again. I said fine, what is the deposit? She said $70. I said, that’s the whole total! She said yes. ??? !!!!

I said you can’t make any sort of courtesy to move the site to next year? I’m trying to do my best to come back and have a good experience and be able to give a good review. She literally yelled at me that she is done with it and I can talk to the owner Glenn at 5pm today. I said okay you swear he will be there at 5 today for me to talk to? And she said no!!! I said I will call but can you leave a note somewhere letting him know to expect a call from me? She said “I will let you know.” I clarified “I meant for you to let him know.” She FLIPPED OUT and said she already told me and I’ve made her angry and she doesn’t like it and screamed bye and hung up!!

I called back and left another message stating I am requesting a call back at 5 today from Glenn and I will call as well. I’ll update with what happens but so far, I will NEVER come back here JUST because of that woman. Which is unfortunate because it was truly...

Following the directions on their website is not a good idea. Do this instead:

Take Blue Ridge Parkway until you see a sign for WOLF LAUREL GAP. Turn on to that road, it is Heintooga Ridge Rd Drive past the gravel road directly on your left(Google Maps wants you to go that way). Keep driving until you see a sign that says MOLLIE GAP. On your left in a a few feet you will see a road pop up with their sign of MILE HIGH CAMPGROUND. Go up that way. Go slow. Several LARGE pot holes and the speed bumps they have in place are bad. You will want to inch over them.

The Good:

The weather was always nice for us(June). Cool 65+ during the day while down in Cherokee it was 85+. Elk are really cool to see...but stay back. Showers were hot, shower room was.....primitive. They do not turn on the lights until dark in there, and only for 30 min. Bathrooms are flush and huge SS sinks are out next to them to clean dishes and hands. A water spigot it by the restrooms, too.

We got lucky with our campsite, #3. Very nice view. #1 had a million dollar view. #22 and 23 were beautiful as well, and Site T-01 was fantastic. But...really...if you don't get those, your camping in trees...and driving out of the way for no view. I don't understand why they don't cut some trees down and bushes....they could have amazing sites all over the place, but just a few is all they have.

All the campers at the site were very nice and courteous.

The bad: Bring cash. They don't do check or cards. They could do cards by getting the attachment for iPhones to read cards. They get cell service up in the office, I know because when I got there the lady at the front desk was on the phone and never acknowledged me for about 2 minutes until I pointed at my name that I saw scribbled on a notebook with my campsite number. Then she got off the phone.

Cell service was iffy at my site....in and out....but that really isn't the point to go camping.

In conclusion:

We liked our stay, if we ever went back we would want the sites I listed or it is not worth it. The campground hostess was bit rude when we first arrived, but she was nice from then on(we stayed 3 nights). They ARE doing something fishy with reservations. Talking to other campers of when they reserved, and what they were told on what was open and the sites available...just...

Well it all started with the Campground Host at checkin(6/5/17). She said we had to pay upfront for 2 nights because there is a 2 night minimum stay for a Camp site with a view which is completely false. She only said there was a 2 night minimum stay for a view site after I was questioning whether we were going to stay a second night. No where on their Website does it say there is a 2 night minimum stay for a view site nor did she mention it on the phone when I reserved the site a week prior to our checkin day. I spoke with another camper that said they stay there several times a year and they have never heard of the 2 night minimum stay either and have never pad for the second night up front unless they knew for a fact they were staying more than one night, then I spoke with a second camper and they had just arrived on 6/6/17 and got a view site and they told the same Host they were only going to stay one night and she told them if you are going to stay a second night just let me know as soon as you can and that is the way it's suppose to work. I have always been told up front if there is a 2 night minimum for any Campground or Hotel in the past always NEVER after you arrive at the destination. This Host was not there the morning of our checkout and left a camper that she knew watch the Camp Office while she left the Campground. She called me back after we left once she returned to the Campground because she got some incorrect info from the Camper who was watching the office. She was very rude on the phone and would not let me speak and kept cutting me off when I would try to respond to what she was saying even after I let her speak w/o interrupting her. When I was still trying to respond to what she was saying she just kept talking over me and then she hung up on me.I was never able to say a single word. I could not believe she would treat a possible lifetime customer this way " WOW " completely ridiculous ! I have been camping for over 50 years and have never felt more taken advantage of from a Host at a Campground then I did at this one.We will " NEVER EVER "stay at this Campground again as long as this women is...

I first heard about Mile High Campground outside Cherokee NC on social media when a friend posted that actor Jason Momoa camped there. So we checked it out and booked a campsite with a view for 2021. You can book sites a year in advance but you must call and they close from Nov until the beginning of May. It is over 5,000 ft so its cool at night and not that hot during the day either. The checkin office sells firewood but not ice. There are no electric hookups but one of the bathrooms does have hot showers. The MST ( Mountains to Sea trail) runs right through the campground which is in the Qualla Boundary ( Cherokee land) and next to the Black Balsam area of Great Smoky Mt National Park. In addition to tent and RV sites there are several small rustic cabins for rent. Each cabin only has one small window on the backside but it seems that motorcyclists rent them often. There is a resident elk herd that is often seen in the early morning or evening in the grassy area next to the deck where campers gather to watch the sunset. This herd travels between Mile High snd Black Balsam campground in the Great Smoky Mt Nat Park, 8 miles up the road. The national park sites are less pricey but are closer together and don’t have the views that Mountain High has. This yr campsites are $30/ night going up to $35/ night in 2023. If you bring an extra person ( we did this past weekend) its an extra $10/ night. We ve already booked our campsite for 2023 ! The sites with the best views and on the weekends go fast ! Tent site 00 is the best view of all !

This is a special place to visit. The remote location, natural detail and views are a rare find. Glen is an excellent host. He is glad to talk with you and share things to help you make the most of your trip. The trip up to the campground is good road but steep. The campground runs along the ridge of the mountain so be prepared for the climb and descent. I pulled a 40’ 5th wheel up the mountain and parked there without an issue, but you should check with Glen before you bring something that big in and you should be expert with backing a trailer. It is cool to cold at the campground. It is at 5500 feet. We just visited in mid June and needed sweatshirts and jeans. The temp was 39F-60F one of the days. We liked the break from the heat but pack accordingly. Verizon and ATT cell service were ok but broadband internet was essentially non existent. 4 reasons you may give this campground less than 5 stars. If any of these apply to you, you should not camp here: 1. you are looking for the 50 amp hookup. Well, stop looking. There is no power on this area of the mountain so you are either on battery, gas or generator. It is a nice change of pace. 2. You are looking for the water hookup. There is no water run to the sites. There is water at the office where you can fill your fresh tank. 3. You are looking for the go karts and mini golf. You definitely won’t like this place. There is nothing here except amazing views and unapologetic simplicity. If you don’t like that, better stay somewhere else. 4. You need the password for the WiFi.
