El Balcón del Abra — Hotel in Lavalleja

We were extremely disappointed with our stay here. We arrived and were not welcomed by the owners due to a family emergency. As we did not have a tour of the grounds and had no idea about meal times, etc (the staff do not speak English) - we were left to ourselves in our room. That would have been fine, except the ‘private terrace’ attached to the room we paid extra to upgrade to was certainly not private nor did it have any chairs, etc. We realised very quickly that the room we were in was attached to the kitchen and very noisy. Not great. We swung by the kitchen a few hours later to find out what time dinner was served, and then returned when it was time for our meal. We were disappointed with the service as well as the quality of the food. Certainly not gourmet. We were not offered anything to drink (not even water glasses on the table) until the owner arrived at the end of our main course. We ordered some wine but by the time it was poured our dessert was being served. After dinner we returned to our room and had to endure the kitchen noises as well as hearing the owner play his drums for a bit. The following day we had breakfast - again, no service and we were made to feel as though we were an inconvenience rather than paying guests. We asked about using the bikes and the owner prepared them for us. My cycle only had one set of brakes that worked and the other one was the owner’s personal racing cycle and did not have proper pedals. Again - seriously disappointed that we could not even go for a nice cycle ride. Our second dinner was just as disappointing as the first. The food was mediocre at best and again, we only got wine when the owner walked in and noticed we had nothing to drink. The second sleep was better than the first but we were woken up around 0530 as the owner was working in his garage, which the bedroom is attached to. After another below average breakfast, we were relieved to see our driver approach. We had pre-paid for our room and dinners (we luckily did not opt to have the lunch included), and just needed to pay for our wine. We were a bit surprised to be charged $25 for the few glasses we had. Overall this place is not somewhere we would return to or recommend. We appreciate honesty and hosts who genuinely want to ensure their guests have a good time. Our room was nice, but the location of it was problematic. We could not enjoy the ‘private terrace’ as it was not private and did not even have a place to sit and enjoy the sun. The food was basic and not well prepared or presented. We had clearly communicated dietary requirements well in advance, and very little was done to accommodate them. We were made to feel as though we were an inconvenience and that is not a great way to feel. Certainly did not allow...

Para que le sirva a futuros viajeros agrego esta opinión únicamente referida al servicio de este lugar y, obviamente, basado en mi experiencia, que por otros comentarios en airbnb, veo que no fue una excepción. Y justamente, es porque es normal que uno use esa plataforma para reservar alojamientos pero, en el caso de este lugar, es "peligroso" puesto que su propietario fue un tanto "engañoso" en lo que ofrece/muestra versus lo que está dispuesto a brindar. De hecho, el mismo "abrió el paragüas" enviándome un mensaje por wapp contandome que otros viajeros de airbnb habían tenido problemas (ahora me doy cuenta porque). El alojamiento ofrece una tarifa de un poco menos de US$ 100 por día, en una habitacion para 3 personas por airbnb (sólo la habitación) pero parece que no quieren que uno reserve en esa plataforma sino que optes por sus opciones con comidas incluidas, que van desde US$ 240 a US$ 450 por día (una "pequeña" diferencia!). Si no elegís con comidas resulta que sos "huésped de segunda categoría". En mi experiencia, y dada la enorme diferencia, opté por el alojamiento pero, para ser algo "simpático" con el lugar, les contraté una cena, a un valor de US$ 30 por persona que fue UN ROBO (y que además, al hacer el check out nos querían cobrar 35...lo cual aumentaba el robo). No por la calidad de la comida, que era aceptable, sino porque se trataba de 2 caneloncitos con lechuga , 1 flan de postre y agua de la canilla (potable) de beber. Los chicos (12 años) se murieron de hambre....yo no importa. US$30!!!!! Nota aparte: continuamos viajando a otros lugar de la zona y supimos comer en estancias que por $600/800 te "DABAN DE COMER". Otros aspectos negativos del lugar fueron: al llegar no había gente que hablara español para recibirnos. La única persona que atendía era una simpática chica de Estonia. las actividades que ofrecían, y que, en mi caso, fueron casi que la razón para elegirlos, no se podían hacer porque el dueño se había ido a hacer ala delta a Brasil. Ante esa situación y nuestra frustración por la poca oferta que tenían en relación a lo que prometían, conseguimos que nos reserven una "cabalgata" que realizaría un ex empleado del lugar. La hicimos y también fue una decepción. Otros US$ 30 por persona por, básicamente, da una vuelta de 30/40 min alrededor del casco que la podíamos hacer caminando. Tremendos paisajes y sierras para recorrer y lo que nos dieron fue "una vuelta manzana". Nos prestaron unas bicicletas montaña, para pasear por la zona y poder "hacer algo" ya que el dueño no estaba. Las bicis estaban desinfladas en el momento de ir a buscarlas en un garaje y la chica de estonia, sin mucho conocimiento, intentó darles un poco de aire. La que me tocaba a mi era un desastre así que deje las 2 que estaban OK para los chicos. Se alejaron unos cientos de metros y uno de ellos se cayó en el camino de balastro. Se raspó y golpeó en la cara, que le sangró, pero no fue nada grave. A los días, el dueño del lugar me mandó un mensaje pretendiendo cobrar por las roturas de la bici. La verdad, no tengo idea si fueron consecuencia de la caída o ya las tenía pero, frente a tan mal servicio recibido, no confié en su testimonio. En su mensaje me decía "es lamentable que con los uruguayos SIEMPRE tenemos estos problemas". Yo me pregunto: "porqué tendrá problemas SIEMPRE???". Porque la verdad es que, por suerte, viajo mucho y nunca tengo problema algunos. Se ve que hay algo ahí que no está haciendo bien. Tendrá que pensarlo un poco. Soy de viajar bastante por Uruguay/Región y contratar este tipo de actividades y lo de Balcón del Abra fue de lo peor que recibí. Luego seguimos para otra estancia en las inmediaciones de la Quebrada de los Cuervos y, por suerte, todo lo que nos sucedió fue genial, en una estancia de características similares. Para que no todo sea negativo, la habitación que nos dieron estaba muy bien, el baño precioso y abundante agua para los calores...

I had the pleasure of staying at this beautiful posada, and it exceeded all my expectations. The surroundings are absolutely stunning — wide open views, rolling hills, and peaceful nature all around. The posada itself is charming, well-kept, and full of character, with lovely animals (hi Juanita the deer, Perico the gentle bull, and Escobar the pig!) adding to the unique atmosphere.
