Estancia Aguila Blanca — Hotel in Lavalleja

We stayed at Estancia Aquila Blanca at the beginning of the low season. I had come across this by accident, right before we were leaving for Uruguay, and booked it because “it felt right”. It sure was. Owner Patricia, along with her son Jaime and other son Jonathan (who we did not get to meet, his baby was ill, unfortunately) were the consummate hosts, with an uncanny ability to know when to sit and chat, or not. Our 4 day stay had more food than you could eat! Breakfast, Lunch, Tea and Dinner, all complete. Jaime is a fantastic cook, as well as an intuitive, introspective world traveler. Interesting to chat with. The horseback riding was good, the horses themselves were fantastic... healthy, well-groomed, responsive. Only downfall for me personally was that I am a bit of a horsewoman, and we simply walked the horses on the rides. But since another guest was there with her 6 yr old daughter and they were riding two together, I understood. I’m sure you are able to ride to your capability, all guests considered. There is a man made lake and kayaks for your use. We saw a capybara while paddling about, about the size of a small brown bear, who got in the water with us and promptly disappeared! No worries though; they are vegetarians and can hold their breath for up to an hour. The “cascades” (waterfalls) were running a bit dry at the end of the summer season, but the ‘62 Jeep ride out, the hike to the falls, and the hiking up the rocks once there were all worthwhile. We enjoyed meeting other guests Calina and her daughter Josefina, as well as Teresita and Eduardo who manage the serving and the barn respectively. Just one warning... try to get there before dark! You will be driving upwards of 25km on dirt roads without signs, with directions to “make a right at the escuela” and “pass the 2 old empty houses before the road splits” type of directions. Look for “AB” signs. But once you get there, see and your room, and meet your hosts, any potential angst will fall by the wayside. Enjoy the V A S T expanse of their 1000 hectacres and the horses, sheep and cattle that graze it. Wonderful rooms, huge bathrooms, wildlife, nature. Fabulous visit to this authentic small estancia in a lovely rural part of Uruguay. Very welcoming family, especially Pat who was a wonderful host. This is a homestay type of experience, so you eat as a group (guests), food was tasty & plentiful although a shame we didn’t see any parilla action while we were there. Horse rides in the wonderful fields most mornings and afternoons, some horses were slow so no worries if you are not experienced. Tank swimming pool which was a great way to cool off, ping pong, darts, kayak on the lake which I loved, watching the Carpinchos running away, birds a plenty, even an armadillo or 2. Rooms were large and private and we felt very relaxed to wander around the grounds at any time. This is a great place to come to relax, especially with a family. Nature, wildlife, activities and food all included, if you want alcohol or soft drinks just add to the bill as you go. A car is useful but we got the bus (Montevideo to Cerro Colorado) and a taxi from there to the estancia organised by Aguila Blanca. You don’t need a car while there. This is not a” hotel “experience, this is not luxury it is home life, decent home made food staying in someone’s house and feeling very welcome sharing their experiences....

Difícil de calificar, eliminaré adjetivos, al menos así el aporte podrá ser útil para otros. El acceso para un auto familiar no es complejo, aunque son unos cuantos kilómetros de balastro, no todos en buen estado. Al llegar nos recibieron, y nos dieron una rápida recorrida, algunas explicaciones y nos llevaron a nuestra habitación. Somos cuatro, nosotros dos y nuestros hijos adolescentes. Duplex nos dijeron y era correcto. En la planta baja cama matrimonial y en la planta superior camas individuales. La planta baja carecía de ventanas, solo dos puertas con vidrio, una de las cuales da a la galería y otra al pasillo interior, con lo cual resulta muy oscura, y poco aireada, la planta superior tiene más aire pero es a las vez más calurosa, (fuimos en febrero), nos dieron un único ventilador, lo que no resultó suficiente. Las ventanas carecen de mosquitero, y las de planta superior no tienen falleba por lo que cuando se presentó una tormenta importante, con lluvia y mucho viento, no teníamos como cerrarlas. El baño correcto, salvo por dos detalles, uno el bidet en una de sus posiciones vierte toda el agua al piso, la otra y quizás más compleja, la ventana se encuentra al lado del "water" casi a nivel piso y da directamente a la galería, imposible usarlo con la ventana abierta, y en la noche, imposible usarlo sin hacer,... como decirlo, un show de sombras contra fondo blanco hacia la galería. La piscina, una suerte de tanque australiano, estaba muy bien cuidada, pero el deck no tanto, con cabezas de clavo sobresaliendo en el borde mismo de la piscina, el mobiliario una reposera y dos sillas de playa. Realmente hay un faltante de mobiliario en condiciones, sería importante para poder disfrutar una hermosa galería como la que tiene la estancia. En nuestro caso, la galería tenía una silla con respaldo bastante deteriorada, dos bancos chicos de madera sin respaldo y una mesa ratona. Otras habitaciones tenían muebles con respaldo y hamacas, no fue así en la nuestra. Las comidas correctas y variadas, en nuestro caso que no tomamos vino, solo tenían una botella de refresco, (nos dijeron que no les habían traído), y luego botellas chicas de agua mineral. No tuvimos suerte en nuestra estadía, ya que de tres días y dos noches, en dos días y por horas, faltó la luz. De día no fue tan impactante, pero de noche no fue algo agradable. Pusieron velitas en pasillos y áreas comunes, nadie nos vino a preguntar cómo estábamos, a ofrecernos las velitas o a explicarnos nada, resultado tuvimos que salir por la estancia a sacar velas de lugares comunes para tener con que iluminarnos. Fuera de las velas, no hubo otra previsión para la ausencia de luz y de energía eléctrica. El paseo a las cascada fue muy bonito, el entorno hermoso, la cabalgata mis hijos la disfrutaron mucho, igual que la salida en kayak, nosotros recorrimos a pie la laguna cercana, realmente disfrutable, vimos familias de carpinchos, unos chajas, y finalmente las noches estrelladas, son un goce. La conectividad no es buena, el WiFi no cubre todas las habitaciones, y por la red del celular, casi no hay señal. El personal responde cortesmente, pero si uno no pide, solicita, pregunta, se pierde la mayoría de las actividades. Salvo quien nos recibió, el resto casi diría, rehuye el contacto. Eso está muy bueno para mantener la privacidad, no tanto para conocer y aprovechar todo lo que tiene la estancia. Generalmente no hago reseñas tan largas, pero como vieron, en nuestra experiencia se sumaron tanto cosas a favor, como en contra. Las conclusiones quedan...
