Mercedes is not necessarily a tourist town, but we liked the atmosphere of the town and the river front and actually enjoyed our stay there. We stayed for two nights during the “Jazz a la Calle” festival in January, which made Mercedes probably livelier than normal. The choice regarding the Brisas del Hum, was pretty easy. It has a perfect central location right on the main square and just a few blocks from the river front. Everything is walkable and seemed safe. But, more importantly it is pretty much the only option available in Mercedes. Rates were high, but this was not really unexpected, as we stayed during the city’s main international event.||||Check in was pleasant with no issues and English was spoken. Our room was modern, smallish, but comfortable and "hotel clean" with a/c and a fridge. The bathroom was clean and well equipped, but was showing some wear and tear. The shower was just ok, as the shower has had also seen better times. WIFI was free and realiable.||||The hotel also has a small pool and a parking area, which was however full when we arrived. But this was not really an issue as street parking in front the hotel is not a problem.|| ||Nothing to complain regarding the hotel as such or the room. Nothing really exceptional, but all fine.||||What brings this hotel down is the breakfast, which is included in the room rate. Breakfast is served in Don Peperone (in the hotel) and is an absolute disgrace. It’s a truly chaotic affair. Tables are not cleared. If you find a clear table, you go hunting for coffee cups, plates and cutlery. Food items are just replenished sporadically and partly. In our case, we first looked for an available table, which was not easy. Then we wanted to grab some coffee. Good luck, coffee was available, but bad luck, no cups anywhere. As plates were available we grabbed some food, but then again no cutlery. I was later lucky to get a fork, but as for knives no such luck. After starting to eat, it emerged that one employee was washing coffee cups by hand and was handing out coffee cups at the bar. So we went to bar and got us two. Not worth the effort, as the coffee was terrible. Also, the fruit juices offered were of the watery and sugary type and just rubbish. The food we tried was subpar with the exception of some of the cakes. Also, after the hand washed coffee cups were handed out the employee disappeared again. Only, one waitress remained, but she did not seem to be interested to be involved in the breakfast affair at all. She spent her time polishing steak/pizza knives for lunch and couldn´t be bothered to deal with the breakfast buffet or clear tables. One woman asked for an item of the buffet, that has not been replenished for a quite a while. All she got was a “No”. The next morning, we didn’t even to bother with breakfast, although it was paid for in the room rate. By far the worst breakfast experience for a very, very long time (and this is a 4* classified hotel and priced accordingly).||||Based on previous comments on TA, management seems to be aware of the problem, but maintains that Don Peperone is an independent operation. Well, sorry, but this is not good enough, especially if one has to pay for breakfast with the room rate, anyway.||||To sum it up, we enjoyed our stay in Mercedes, the hotel is decent, the rooms are fine, front desk staff was pleasant, but breakfast is terrible beyond...
Read moreMy wife and I spent 3 nights with a Hotels.com prepay.||We took the 9:15AM Agency Central Bus from Paysandu, arriving at Fray Bentos Bus Terminal at 10AM. Because we were early, we chose to walk 1.6km northwest down the main avenue to this quiet hotel. ||The Spanish speaking receptionist copied our passports while we filed out a guest form before getting our key to the ground floor #111 overlooking the garden pool. The small carpeted room has a comfortable double with nightstands, open shelved closet, shelf unit with chair, TV(no English) above and refer below, large window opening to a garden pool, and nice tiled fully outfitted bathroom with stall shower. We asked to change rooms when discovering the shower leaked into our bedroom, and with little delay moved to similar room #114, where only the shower hose leaked and needed replaced.||The nice 7AM buffet breakfast includes OJ, yoghurt, cereal, fresh fruit, fruit salad, bologna/cheese, medialunas, cakes, coffee, tea, and hot milk. We enjoyed the quiet AC, the lovely 15 meter pool with towels from reception but not the intermittent but secure WIFI .||One day, we walked 400 meters southeast passing restaurants and shopping to the Plaza Constitution, and another day walked 2+ km south along the river to the 2015 UNESCO Museum of the Industrial Revolution(El Anglo).||While this busy hotel seems impersonal and a bit institutional, it’s well located for the excellent riverfront park for sunset, port views and Costanera, and is...
Read moreThe hotel is located on a pretty Plaza and a few blocks from the Rambla. The Plaza is lovely, as is the main feature which is the church. The Rambla is worth walking to as it is maintained nicely and goes along the river for a mile or so. There is a little restaurant on the shore where you can stop for a drink and bite to eat.||||We had a suite and the room was quite comfortable. There was a small sitting room, bedroom and bath with the sink located outside the bath. There were two glass doors the exited to the roof patio, but no place to sit. There is secure parking on the hotel grounds which is convenient. ||||The breakfast was served in a large dining area, overlooking the pool. It was nothing special but it was typical of Uruguayan breakfast. Some bread, fruit salad, croissants, galletas, and coffee. ||||The sleep quality, in our case, was terrible. At 230am, there was a huge crowd of people outside the room screaming and yelling for 2 hours. It sounded as though there was a fight going on. It lasted until about 5am before the crowd dispursed. ||||The is a small restaurant connected to the hotel which used to be an Uruguay chain, Don Pepperone. It is now under new management and is called 10 Dias. ||We stopped in for a drink and a bite to eat and it was acceptable. || ||It may be a 4-Star hotel based on Uruguayan standards but anywhere else, it would be rated 2-Star. ||||If we were going to be in Mercedes, I think we would look at...
