Road Trip Of A Lifetime To The Most Beautiful Place In Vietnam!
Where do I even begin with this legendary road trip around the Ha Giang Loop? My friend and I booked a 4 day 3 night trip with Ha Giang Roadtrip on a whim and it turned out to be the most epic road trip we’ve ever done. Ever.
We decided to book with Ha Giang Roadtrip because it had such great reviews and talking to Opi before the trip was super helpful and he gave off such great vibes. He answered all of our questions and even booked our buses to and from Sapa and Hanoi to make things easier. We knew we wanted to drive ourselves around the loop, but also wanted to have someone leading the way. Opi obviously knows Ha Giang like the back of his hand and because he’s from a small community in Hà Giang province he knows all the hidden gems, all the secret locations, all the good eats, all the best routes and all the gorgeous viewpoints. He definitely made our trip what it was and it definitely wouldn’t have been as epic without him and his friends at Ha Giang Roadtrip!
Our motorbikes were great, they were super safe and we were all very responsible on the road (if you don’t feel 100% comfortable driving yourself, they offer an easy-rider option so you can ride on the back of Opi’s friend’s bike as they drive the loop for you, which is awesome). There is nothing quite like driving through a place where the road twists and turns through jaw-dropping canyons and breathtaking mountain passes. The Ha Giang loop is a total dream!
The accommodations were also lovely! The first night we got to stay at a local homestay and enjoy hot-pot with the family who lived there. It was a pretty incredible experience to be invited into their home for dinner and some local wine! The second night we stayed in a nice little hotel in Dong Van and also enjoyed food and wine with the locals that Opi knew there. Finally, on the last night we stayed in a beautiful homestay in the mountains, all handcrafted by the owner himself. Karaoke-ing Celine Dion at dinner and waking up to a panorama view overlooking the lush valley below was definitely a highlight!
The food was also always delicious and there was always more than enough to go around! Most dishes were traditional Vietnamese with lots of choice to choose from. I left every meal happy and full!
Opi was such a great person to do the Ha Giang Loop with as he speaks perfect English and Vietnamese. He constantly made us laugh and was super informative when it came to history and locations. He also told us that he started this company to help establish a connection between tourists and locals. He wanted travellers to have the opportunity to discover Northern Vietnam from the inside with all its traditions and ways of life. The local people he works with are not sponsored or working with travel agencies and he chose them because he thought they were welcoming, open-minded and motivated about sharing their culture. That was exactly what we were looking for when it came to choosing a tour and we are so happy to have been able to see just how special Ha Giang really is!
Thank you Opi for everything and hope to see you...
Read moreWe did a 3D2N private motorbike tour with bus pickup/dropoff from Hanoi as a few friends. The tour was well organized and we were well fed.
Bus: sleeper bus to Ha Giang had bunk-style pods on each side of the bus. The pods don't completely lie flat but came pretty close so were comfortable. There's no toilet on the bus but there's a ~30min stop about halfway in the journey. bus back to Hanoi had comfy recliners in a 2-1 layout. No toilet, there's a ~30min break around the middle of the trip bus drops off at the hostel in Ha Giang and at your hotel in Hanoi, but pick up in Hanoi is from a specified location
Food: breakfasts were relatively simple, lunches and dinners on the tour were feasts where we really just couldn't finish. It's all vietnamese food and delicious. they cater to vegetarians! I think if you're vegan it'll work too, just check with them before booking, and make sure you tell them any dietary restrictions the drivers/guide eat with you during lunch and dinner, family style. Not sure if this is a private tour only thing though dinners have "happy water", a local corn alcohol, enjoy :)
Rooms: since we booked a private tour we got our own room(s) every night, including the first (half) night at the hostel. For the second night, the group tours slept together in a giant room, I think first night was in a hotel, second night was in a homestay
Trip: the trip is mostly spent driving, with stops at some scenic spots. Enjoy the views during the drive too, it's quite pretty some stops had a ton of tourists/motorbikes parked outside, other stops had few to none. I think some of the stops we took were only for the private tour (it's too small to handle more than a few visitors at a time), but it might also depend on your guide and the conditions for the day if it rains, they have pretty comprehensive water protection for you to wear. There's shoe coverings, pants, and coat to stay dry in rainy weather roads are a little rough sometimes but the drivers make the ride quite smooth there's a waterfall visit in the itinerary that includes optional swimming (if you have your swimsuit). It's a few minutes walk from the motorbike parking to...
Read moreMy boyfriend and I booked a 3 days 2 nights tour and had an amazing trip. Ha Giang itself is one of the most beautiful places we’ve seen. Phuc, the team leader speaks a good conversational English and my easy driver Hung was very nice. Overall, we were 4 to 8 in the group and all the easy drivers were nice, all smiles. Hung and I managed to speak a lot even with my broken Vietnamese.
The itinerary is excellent, the views are amazing even if it might be cloudy. The bottles of water and rain protection are offered, appreciated and essential.
Exchanges with Opi before the tour was easy, booking is easy without deposit. He is nice and welcoming. You pay the first day of the tour
We booked the transfer from Hanoi to Hanoi Giang with Opi. Although the pick up and transfer to the bus itself was a little shady (mostly from lack of communication), we arrived to the bus safely. The VIP bus to Ha Giang went well with the classic driver waking the passengers up when you have arrived. Then we could sleep in a dorm as the bus arrived at 2 or 3 AM.
I definitely recommend booking an easy driver. They are used to the roads, they’ve done it loads of times and we felt very safe with these guys. Prepare your legs, backs and arms for some ache as you will do 100-150km per day.
The private room in dong van was okay, if you wish a higher quality room, do ask but you won’t be with the group.
Food itself was fresh, good but repetitive. Lunches and dinners were delicious but by the third meal, I was disappointed from the lack of variety, knowing vietnam has such good and diverse food. (Bún, phở, nem, chả giò, etc) At the home stay, I learned that I couldve asked for Lau (hotpot) or bbq since by then, we were a small group of 4. Also for the foreigners, there are French fries and fried chicken. For vegans or vegetarians, vietnam has many delicious options even up in the north.
Overall, I recommend the tour (at least 3 days, 2 nights) with Opi’s group. If you’re looking for better rooms (hotel at dong van, for exemple) or meals, just ask them. They are very open! The groups are small so you don’t wait long...
