There are some travelers that only want the cheapest bed available and don’t really care about where they sleep, after all their eyes are closed. What does it matter? There are other travelers that concern themselves way too much with accommodations. These people end up spending so much time in the hotel that they all but miss, the culture and the people whose country they are visiting. Recently I have come to realize the best way to travel is in a sweet spot somewhere in between. This is definitely how I intend to travel in the future. What I mean is, travelers remember experiences, not facilities. Don’t get me wrong, beautiful swimming pools and adorable bungalows are definitely part of it. But what I am really referring to is meeting and spending time with new people in a new place. When people tell stories about their journeys, they say things like, “Do you remember the really cute old couple at the bed and breakfast that made us that wonderful tomato soup?” or “We want to tell you about this middle aged couple that we stayed with, at their Airbnb? Her apple pie completely took over all of your senses? And, do you remember how well he played the guitar? Not many people have repeated conversations about a building. They talk about their experiences with other interesting people. I have met a couple just like that. Ngoc is a bright and cheerful young woman. She and her husband, Tuan are amazing people that are making their dreams come true. On top of owning a truly gorgeous homestay, that is a joy to stay in, Tuan is a respected member of his community and even participates in local team sports, football. Ngoc is also passionate about her dreams, she loves to cook and has her own restaurant (The Lantern). Tuan can make a mean plate of fried noodles with vegetables. Come help these amazing people live their dream. When you come to Phong Nha you are going to love it anywhere you stay. It has spectacular scenery and wonderful people. But if you ask me, don’t stay just anywhere. Stay somewhere you can tell a story about. The Hillside View Bungalow story is...
Read moreWe wished we could have stayed longer in the super cute bungalows and under the excellent care of the owners Gem and Tuan and their efficient and friendly receptionist Hue. Situated in the middle of a mind blowing landscape (think Jurassic Park), the bungalows and pool have a modern LA style and vibe. We felt at ease from the moment we were picked up by Tuan at the train station (in a super clean car as my kids want me to point out after a rather adventurous train ride). We loved the pool and felt very welcome in their family home. The food - served either next to the pool or on their amazing roof terrace - was outstanding and ranged from Vietnamese delicacies to burgers. Hue organised a highly recommended National Park tour for us (pick up at the bungalows) and on the second day they drove us to the landing pier for the Phong Nha cave boats and picked us up a few hours later (there are also bikes available). We enjoyed many Vietnamese iced coffees at their pool (probably the best in our entire trip). Next time we will visit longer to explore the amazing Phong Nha Ke Bang national park in more depth and we could think of no better place to stay than the Phong Nha Hillside View Bungalows. Thank you very much for a hugely enjoyable time, a true highlight of our trip through...
Read moreWe stayed there for 2 nights with a group of friends. We were with 7 people in total and had 4 bungalows. The bungalows are clean and big. The food they served was amazing, a few of my friends had the chicken schnitzel and they say it’s the best they ever had. They ordered it for lunch and dinner! We had a wonderful time! ||The weather was very bad, it was raining and there wasn’t much to do. So we decided to swim in the pool and make the best of it, the people working there immediately brought a big music speaker and we had a pool party in the rain! After that, I got sick and stayed in bed the whole day. The lady working there, pictured in the group photo with a white T-shirtless, was a delightful woman! As soon as she realized i was sick, she sent someone else to the pharmacy to get me medicines and came in my room to give me a head massage with some green magic oil haha. It was the best thing ever!||When we had to leave, the owner brought us to his restaurant and we had a great meal before taking the bus and going to our next destination. They did everything they could so we would have a great time, they were so welcoming to us!||Thank you for you’re hospitality and we hope to...
