This is a great experience. We booked as an extension to Swan Cruise ha long bay trip directly via thier website.
A private driver picked us up from old town Hanoi hotel and delivered us to Paddy Home in the village of Đoàn Xá, just outside of Đông Triều. its about a 2hour drive. We were met by our host, Tan Vu, the homeowner. He has excellent English, a beautiful house, and a generous hospitable nature. We settled into our room. It was great: comfortable large bed, well appointed private bathroom, lovely communal living room and patio for guests, brand new swimming pool.
Then we had lunch. Ohh, the lunch. Tan's sister-in-law is the cook. And cook she can. Every meal is traditional vietnamese style, plentiful portions, and expensive high quality ingredients. All prepared in a typical family kitchen with love. I think these meals were the best that we had anywhere in Vietnam.
Our main activity was bike riding with Tan as our guide. After lunch we went out for about 2.5hrs and the next morning before checkout we went again for 2hours. This of course is flexible based on your preferences. If we had had more time, then lounging by the pool would be good too. The rides brought us to picturesque rice paddies with traditional workers raking in a conical hat, temples and pagodas with ancestral altars, a traditional ceramic factory, village market with every imaginable edible creature for sale. These were great bike rides.
There is not an enormous amount of things to do here, but that is exactly the point. This is rural relaxation in a beautiful country estate with excellent food and a super friendly engaging host. My only regret is that we only had 1 night. We made new Facebook friends with Tan and look forward to reminiscing as we see his posts with upcoming...
Read moreWe loved this rustic homestay! Jackie (Tun) is the perfect host, who made us fee so at home that we felt like VIP's. The rooms are a little rough round the edges, but we were barely in them, so this wasn't an issue for us. Jackie took us on a cycle tour of the local area, showing us the local temple, pottery and paddy fields and even took us fishing. At the pottery, Jackie explainined each stage of the process, which was really interesting. Later he explained how the paddy fields were tended and watered and we even had a go with some of the equipment. The fishing was on traditional small boats using nets and was great fun. The cycling route was very flat and easy to navigate. The only downside was the cylcing was around 2.5 hours, so it left us a little saddle sore the next day, as we hadn't been on bikes for years. The food cooked by a family member of Jackie's was delicious. On our second day we chose not to rise super early for the demonstration of Vietnamese traditional martial arts as we had a full days visit to Halong Bay planned, but we would have loved to participate in this had we stayed another night at...
