They're trying to scam you to squeeze out more money at checkout. Without a motorbike, you can't leave the mountains anyway. I was asking the price of chicken for dinner via Zalo — 120k/kg. This wasn't a mistake; it's a deliberate way to mislead and overcharge.
80k for a motorbike ride up the mountain and 50k per person back. The hotel staff drove us instead of providing a free shuttle, trying to make money off that too. The ride was very dangerous. Also they charged us an extra 20k per person just to enter the mountain 🤷♀️. The area is tiny with nothing but a single viewpoint. There's nothing to do.
At checkout, they charged twice as much for the chicken — 425k for 1.7 kg. The chicken came without any sides, no rice, no vegetables. Just plain chicken that actually weighed around 1 kg for 425k. Two local dogs immediately showed up, looking very hungry and scared. We were happy to share with the food, we felt very sorry for them. They were scared and not fed. There was no toilet paper or towels, and the bed sheets smelled bad. There were lots of mosquitoes, the place had holes everywhere, and it felt like sleeping outside. The toilet was uncomfortable without a seat.
When we got back down, they asked for another 20k for parking, even though it should have been free. Instead of 350k for the night, we ended up paying almost 700k (excluding dinner and drinks). The woman in the photo was rude and unfriendly. We've been traveling in Vietnam for a year, visited over 50 provinces, and stayed in over 100 different hotels, motels, homestays, and even tents. We've never encountered anything like this before; usually, everyone is honest and kind. I love Vietnam...
Read moreThe only way up the mountain is on local motorcycles, after this extreme ride, the amusement park will seem like nothing. When we arrived, a large Vietnamese woman gestured for me to follow her as I tried to recover from the shock and drank water. We made it to the hut with her, but didn't even have time to drop off our backpacks or catch our breath. She didn't understand a word of English and kept trying to ask something in Vietnamese, which we obviously didn't understand. All previous arrangements, including dinner, were made through Zalo with someone who communicated in English. Google Translate was translating the woman's words from Vietnamese incorrectly. We said through google translate in Vietnamese that we would discuss all matters at zalo (I showed her past dialog in English at zalo). All the while we were being eaten alive by mosquitoes and I wanted to go to the bathroom! Then she left, but no sooner had we entered the hut and she immediately brought a Vietnamese tourist who knew a couple of phrases in English. Finally through him we managed to convey that we would like to check in first, to connect to the Internet at least! We chose this place, although we could have checked into any of a dozen hotels down to get a quiet vacation. Not only that, the Vietnamese in the neighboring huts were making noise, and somewhere nearby karaoke. So I do not recommend the place to foreigners, who may think that they are going to nature, for peace, quiet, quiet rest. Here they don't understand...
Read moreWe had a bad experience staying at Phú Sĩ.. Summary: Lack of care & effort from host Bad hygiene conditions Vegetarian unfriendly English speaker / beginner Vietnamese unfriendly
The main problem came from a lack of care and genuine intention from the host’s side to make us feel welcome and help us settle in; right from the moment of arrival (after a long day of travel and miscommunication about the pick-up by the host), the ‘pay for every step along the way’ mindset of the host became clear. There was no effort made to meet us through a bit of English/translation; all depended on my efforts with my limited Vietnamese. The bamboo hut was uncleaned, with a used face-mask in the bathroom. General hygiene conditions were poor and the bamboo hut allowed for free roam of insects into our room and bed. After clearly communicating (with 2 weeks notice upfront) that we would like to eat vegetarian food if possible (which was confirmed as possible by the host), we ended up having old dry bread (unsliced) with oily fried egg for breakfast, definitely not the ‘bánh mì trứng’ I was expecting (in fact, it was the worst I ever had). These experiences were enough for us to know we should shorten our longer planned stay to just 1 night. Additional notice: our bathroom consisted of a bucket and tap, with a squat toilet and no...
