I have been enjoying this relatively serene area. There is also a Trail to Rondezvous Bay and also to Signal Hill. These quite scenic and picturesque hikes are great for spectacular Landscape and Seascape views of All areas of the Island particularly the Southern Portion. Picnic Benches and rare trees are also in the vicinity of the Walkings Dam. In the wetter times in the year perineal streams can be observed.
All in all the Walkings Nature Reserve is a great place to visit and to enjoy Nature...
Read moreFor those who are willing to put a bit of effort into their holidays then there can be no better place on the island of Antigua. We were welcomed by friendly staff who assessed our fitness and reccomend we take the Signal Hill path. It was spectacular. It was an easy walk up to the reservoir and once there it was fascinating to wander around the business end of this old water receptacle to see how it all works. From thre the climb through the forest was a little muddy in places (good footwear is essential) but we happily took our time and savoured the tranquility of it all. The path was exceptionally well marked with frequent flags giving reassurance that we were on the right path. When you break through the trees and get to the old remains of the lookout post the views down to Carlisle bay are breathtaking. The path then continues to climb finally taking you to Antigua's second highest peak. The whole island is laid out to see in all its diverse glory. Going down was, understandably easier than the ascent but still frequent stops were taken to soak in the wonder of it all. Obviously take plenty of water, take your time (for us 2,5 hours) but please, please, if you're able, then be bothered. The memory of this hike will live with me...
Read moreLike others before me, the highlight is the view from the very top of Signal Hill. To get that best view, continue past the Signal Hill Lookout sign and up the hill on your left side. From there, one can see St. John's Harbour, the blue roof on the Sir Vivian Richards' Cricket Grounds, the airport runways & white roof of the terminal and a lot more! One can see how small the island actually is.....
If you go, please remember to congratulate Refica Attwood on her recent Commonwealth Points of Light Award as a volunteer (from Queen Elizabeth II). She works passionately and deserves all the recognition she gets!!
The trails are very well marked, with no litter. It is a good climb though...my wife and I are seniors (we arrived in January and live here now) and the Signal Hill hike is as much as we can do... It took us 2.5 hours today to go to the top and back....Still worth it to...
