If you’re not fit, you’ll struggle. I did it while suffering from plantar fasciitis and it was a terrible idea. Took a cab (40,000 pesos 🤦🏻♀️) to Rio Electrico as it’s supposed to save you some walking. Don’t fall for it. I walked 29km in total which is more than what most people do following the usual trail and spent all that money on the cab too. But if you insist on starting at Rio Electrico, then wait at the car park at the bottom of the trail and hitch a ride. While the view is pretty like any mountain and laguna is bound to be, if you’re a world traveler, you’ll have seen some more beautiful ones. Do it as a personal achievement if you’d like to say you’ve conquered Fitz Roy. But if it’s for the view or a photo, save yourself the struggle. You can access beautiful views at a much lower altitude (Laguna Capri is one). Just my personal opinion. Walking poles and a face mask will come in handy as you’ll breathe in a lot of dirt. Read moreWell-marked trail. One of my bucket list items. So busy when we went, there was a queue at the very end to scale the rocky portion (which is the worst mile) that it was insane -- made it almost not so enjoyable, but the view was worth it.
We got lucky and it was completely sunny that day. We overpacked because we read that it is unpredictable (literally the day before was windy/stormy and the day after had high winds). Be prepared. Better overpacked then under?
Trail starts at the edge of town. You can park there if you're early enough, but we saw plenty of people walk in. Right past La Zorra taproom by 5-10min walk.
We stayed uptop for 1-2h- be mindful theres little to no shade. Bring sunblock and plenty of water. Hiking sticks help, not necessary. Only one portapotty station at the campsite, do not recommend given the stench.
Still frozen atop in 11/2023...
Read moreThe Fitz Roy exceeded all expectations—it truly lives up to its fantastic reputation! However, we made the mistake of opting for the full-day tour from El Calafate, which ended up being less than ideal. We found ourselves rushing through the trail, unable to fully appreciate the stunning views along the way. With only 30 minutes at Laguna de los Tres, we felt rushed and couldn't fully relax and soak in the beauty of the area. In hindsight, we realize that staying in El Chaltén would have allowed us to explore at a more leisurely pace and truly savor this breathtaking destination. Nevertheless, it was a memorable experience mingling with people from all over the globe, of different ages, and, of course, witnessing the Fitz Roy. I highly recommend taking a moment to stop by Laguna Capri on the way back and simply relax...
