As a Natimuk local, I feel incredibly lucky to have Mount Arapiles just down the road. It’s not only the best climbing destination in Australia, it’s truly one of the best in the world. Climbers come from every corner of the globe, and it’s easy to see why: the rock quality is unmatched, the variety of routes is incredible, and the natural beauty is jaw-dropping.
What makes Arapiles special isn’t just the climbing, though, it’s the community. There’s a real sense of connection between locals and visitors. Many climbers fall in love with this place and return year after year (some never leave!). Natimuk itself is a vibrant little town with art, music, and a deep respect for the environment and the climbing culture that thrives here.
I’ve watched people discover themselves on these cliffs, and I’ve seen lifelong friendships begin at the campfire in The Pines. Mount Arapiles isn’t just a rock—it’s a way of life. And I couldn’t be prouder to call...
Read moreAs a climber from the UK, Mount Arapiles had been on my dream list for years—and it did not disappoint. After the long journey halfway across the world, I was greeted by some of the most immaculate trad climbing I’ve ever experienced. The rock is beautifully textured sandstone, and the routes have this brilliant mix of technicality, exposure, and flow that makes every pitch feel memorable.
What really sets Arapiles apart is the culture around it. From the chilled-out vibe of The Pines campground to the friendly locals in nearby Natimuk, it’s got that classic climbing community feel—like Stanage or Gogarth, but with eucalyptus trees and red dirt.
Highlights for me were Bard (an absolute classic) and the jaw-dropping views from the summit walks. I came out expecting a climbing trip, but it felt like a pilgrimage. If you’re a UK climber thinking about the trip, just book it. Arapiles is everything you’ve...
Read moreI finally made the trip to Mount Arapiles and wow, it lived up to every bit of the hype. As a visiting climber, I was blown away by the sheer volume and quality of routes. Arapiles is a trad climber’s dream: perfect gear placements, beautiful sandstone, and routes that are both mentally and physically engaging.
The climbing community here is incredibly welcoming. I arrived solo and left with new friends, belay partners, and unforgettable memories. The Pines campground has this laid-back, communal vibe that makes you feel instantly at home. Sunrise coffee with a view of the Organ Pipes? Magic. Sunset walks to the summit? Even better.
What really struck me was the sense of history and respect for the land climbers here really care about this place. And so they should. Arapiles is more than just a crag; it’s a sacred site for climbers around the world. I’m already counting the days until...
