An excellent mountain amazing views across the Bay of Isles and Cape Le Grande. Short and very steep is excellent. Hard for young children and the unfit. "Win the morning win the day" so get there early to avoid strong winds coming in usually around 11am. No wonder this mountain is called Frenchman's Peak. French explorers really looked a lot around this area in the 1600s. Esperance is a French word meaning 'hope', and Cape Le Grande you can tell is french name due to the 'le'. The French ship "Esperance" navigated a lot of the south coast of Australia way back in time. Check it out on Wikipedia. Now you see why it's called Frenchman's Peak.
Correction: I was wrong about the name. Although my facts are true the name is due to the following: ".Frenchman Peak was named by surveyor Alexander Forrest during an expedition in search of good country for pasture in 1870. We were in Esperance for two days and visited almost all the tourist attractions but there is nothing else like this. There are other lookouts that are pretty but this one is the best out of them all. 5 stars because it deserves it. Plenty of parking closeby so you dont have to walk too much. 1 thing i will say though. It is very hard to climb this mountain. Make sure you bring a water bottle and fly protection hat. The flies are so annoying that they will constantly try to get in your ears and eyes. Don't take this lightly its...
Read moreThe view from the top (and the "window" when nearing the peak) are amazing -- well worthy of 5 stars. However, I rate this down slightly because the "walk" to the top is not for everyone. It is mostly walking up an undulating rock face. Its angle varies from perhaps 15 up to 45 degrees for short sections. Most of it is pretty grippy in the dry, but do not contemplate it when wet. Also, ensure you wear good, grippy walking / hiking shoes / boots. When ascending, remember that the descent is typically more difficult! (Google's location is incorrect. The peak is at 33°58'05.0"S 122°09'59.0"E. Proceed down Luck Bay Road, and the carpark is signposted...
